Hi,
Firstly, I just want to say that this Forum is amazing and thanks to all the people that provide their time to answer questions. I''ve learnt alot from reading older posts in this forum.
That said, I''m still very much a newbie at diamonds - well jewellery in general as I don''t wear any. I''ve recently become engaged and my fiance wants me to get the best diamond he can afford.

So here it is:

Shape: Round
Cut: Select Ideal
Carat: 0.92
Color: F
Clarity: VS1
Regular Price: $5162
Measurements: 6.3-6.25-3.84
Depth Percentage: 61.2 %
Table Percentage: 56 %
Girdle: TN-M
Culet: None (Pointed)
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None (Inert)
Crown Angle: 36%
Pavilion Angle: 43%

Do you think the pricing is right? I just want a diamond that really really sparkles - I chose VS1 as I read somewhere that 1 in 100 people can see inclusions on a VS2 diamond and since we''re opting to buy online, I didn''t want to risk it (also we''re based in UK and can seem to get better quality diamonds in the US diamonds inclusive of taxes - i.e. I can get a VS1 in the US versus a VS2 in the UK)

We''ve only been looking at diamonds online for a week or so but I saw this diamond at union diamonds - then it disappeared and now it''s back - so just wanted to get another opinion. He wants me to find one quick so I''ve got something to show at our engagement party

Thanks!

Hi Angelily and welcome to PS,

Congrats on the engagement! We would be happy to help you with selecting a diamond.

For clarity, a GIA or AGS graded VS2 stone should be eye-clean. The definition for VS is that the inclusions must be difficult for an experienced grader to find with 10x magnification. The reason for the statistic is that other labs and stores are a lot more lenient in their grading. If you work with a reliable vendor who will look the diamond over for you before shipping, they can tell you if it is eye-clean. Unfortunately, Union Diamon is not one of those vendors, they are a drop-shipper who never sees the actual stones they are selling.

Regarding the stone you posted, it looked like you had the crown angle and pavillion percentage instead of the angle, so I looked it up on UD to be sure (pav angle is 40.6) The steeper crown angle means this stone could show more fire (spectral colored flashes) than some others. It may be a great choice, though the only way to have a better idea is to have Idealscope or ASET images, which UD does not provide. If you are wanting a colorless diamond of higher clarity, this stone could be good. You may also be able to drop a little in color and clarity and get a larger stone if you are working with a vendor who can confirm eye-clean.

EDT: The other "issue" I would have with this diamond is that since it is GIA graded, the crown and pavillion angles are rounded. Which direction they were rounded will affect the stone's performance. If they were both rounded down, the diamond would show quite a bit of leakage. The only way to know is with photos and images (which, again, UD does not provide)

Hello and welcome!
The pavillion angle on that diamond is a bit steep (you want to keep the pavillion angle below 41.0).
If you are willing to come down a few grades in color (to an I, still in near colorless range), you can get an AGS 0 ideal cut VS1 diamond that's 1.02 carats and stay in the $5000 range.

ETA: Sorry -- I see jet checked the angles and the 43 is the %.

I suggest running a comparison for price using the diamond search engine provided on the front page of Price Scope, there are some valid options that can be used for comparison purposes. I did not see this particular diamond listed within those results so I was unable to verify the measurements indicated by you above, that said here are some thoughts:

Most people would be hard pressed to find the inclusions within a VS-2 clarity diamond with just their eyes from a top down perspective, but it happens. As an experienced grader, I end up rejecting about four VS-2 clarity diamonds per year for not meeting my expectations for being "eye clean" and about 80% of the SI-1 clarity diamonds that I scrutinize... I think it is more a matter of what your precision of vision is and your ability to pick out inclusions within a diamond - some people are inherently good at it and others have more difficulty finding inclusions. Have you been able to find the inclusions within diamonds graded as being VS-2 when you've looked at them in local stores? Or is this just a matter of being safe by the numbers?

Speaking of "by the numbers" I'm guessing that the pavilion depth (indicated in percent) of the diamond is 43% and that the pavilion angle is something more like 40.8 / 40.9 degrees? And then the Crown angle of 36 degrees is probably indicated in percent around the range of 16%.

Have you run the specs for this diamond through the HCA here on Price Scope? See Tools / Cut Adviser above...

Thanks jet2ks and sarap333 (sorry about the Pavilion Angle). Really appreciate your feedback.

To add to my inital post, I''ve decided to go with a 0.92 carat diamond because I don''t think my hand will suit anything bigger than that (as I don''t currently wear any jewellery and my ring size is between 4 1/2 and 4 3/4)

The VS1 option is only because I think I''ve found that union diamond seems comparable to online vendors in the UK (the next closest is Adiamor which sells a F VS2 diamond for about US$4705 (although I don''t know the finer details about that diamond yet). Can online vendors confirm eye-clean? Or is it usually retail jewellers?

I went to Hatton Garden on Sunday and all the jewellers were really nice but I felt shy asking questions because I''d then feel obligated to buy from their store.

Well, something is not right... :P crown ht is either in the 15% range or the 35 degree range and pavilion is either in the 40.8 degree range or depth in the 43% range. The set of numbers seems to be mixed up to me or it is a horrible cut...

Hi Todd, thanks for your response.

I'm planning to set the diamond in a setting which allows you to see the sides of the diamond and show a lot of light - is it silly that I worry about inclusions as I'm worried you might be able to see them from the side?

I have run the numbers through the HCA calculator- it comes out as Excellent for Light Return and Fire, and Very Good for Scintillation and Spread. Should I be concerned? It falls in the sweet spot for the GIA and AGS Excellent/Ideal candidates.

Oh and sorry everyone - yes - as you can see, this is also the first proper report I've read, the angles should be
Crown Angle: 36.0
Pavillion Angle:40.6

Depends on the vendor. Drop-shippers will not be able to confirm eye-clean, others will. The PS recommended vendors all bring diamonds in-house and examine them before shipping--this is the type of vendor you want to work with if eye-clean is a concern and returning the stone not really an option. Just make sure you let them know what your definition of eye-clean is. Since you mention the open setting, tell them you don't want to be able to see any inclusions from any angle.

Might I suggest visiting Dr. Indira Marchant to look at some diamonds. She is a frequent poster on PS and would be happy to help you. Her website is http://www.bestdiamonds.co.uk/

No problem on the numbers, they can be a little confusing at first.

EDT: Dang, SC, that was some fast typing.

Great minds think alike.

Heh. :P

Thanks everyone - I think my fiance has emailed Indira with specs today - not sure if it''s been responded to. And yes - I did see her name mentioned a number of times in this forum and I did ask him to contact her!

I just hope this online diamond doesn''t disappear...

Yes Dr. Indira Marchant is well known throughout the forum and is in the UK so very well worth any UK purchasers contacting her, she is a wonderful lady, you can't go wrong with her.

Hi Angelily,

Funnily, I have just come back from Hatton Garden myself. I have to say that apart from a few, I didn''t find the jewellers particularly helpful or friendly. So unlike this forum
1.gif
We, too, bought a diamond in from the US as we were attracted by the choice and the competitive prices, although we came very close to buying from Dr Marchant. It''s just that I have the opposite problem from you, finger size 6.5 and needed a bigger stone than we could afford in the Infinity range.

A word of warning though, if you are buying the diamond only, you might want to consider asking the vendor to send it in a flute instead of a holder as the UK customs have mistaken this for a ring in the past and charged an extra 2.5% duty on top of the VAT, but then again, you might have already budgeted for this.

Good luck with finding your dream stone!

Indira is a Crafted by Infinity dealer. I saw this beautiful J VS2 .91 on the Infinity website. You can''t go wrong with an Infinity. I have one and absolutely love it. My stone is also a J VS2.
Infinity .91
Good luck with your search!

Hey there Jet,

Looks like I''m playing defense this morning, and I forgot my shoulder pads! Hey... I''d like to ask that you stop saying that Union Diamond is a drop shipper. I assure you that we most certainly are not, and every single Pricescope customer that has ever bought from us can back us up on that. I''m not sure where you are getting your information from but we happen to ship everything in to our Atlanta office prior to shipment, and each diamond is checked by several of our GIA Graduate Gemologists on staff on the way in, as well as on the way out to the customer. We don''t drop ship. Ever. Even upon request.

I hope I''ve cleared that up and welcome you to do further research on our company before stating something as potentially damaging to our reputation again.

Thanks, much.

Barbara,

I am very sorry for that error. I must have had you confused with another vendor, with your post, I do remember seeing your smiling avatar a couple of other times.

Once again, my apologies for any confusion and I will be sure to have it correct in the future. Just so that I am completely clear, do you supply any type of reflector images to customers upon request?

No sweat, Jet. Thanks for the apology.

If you like it so much, please put a hold on the stone. This will prevent some lurker to snatch it. It happens to me a lot when I was looking for WF and Infinity diamond.

Just to follow up with my diamond buying experience.

I called Union Diamond and was greeted by Tony Rixom, the Chief Operating Officer. He was very friendly and patient with me whilst I asked him a multitude of questions about the diamond including the additional costs associated with buying a diamond from the US to the UK. He then put the diamond on hold for me whilst I had a think through.

After reading the posts on this thread, I emailed Tony to see if he could provide me with an idealscope. Tony was very quick to respond to my enquiry and sent ideal scope images the following day. I was able to speak to him about the diamond and even after finding a cheaper price on Pricescope, Tony honoured that lower price and I was very happy with my diamond purchase from Tony.

Thank you pricescope contributors for helping me pick my diamond, I felt a lot more confident purchasing the stone and am really happy with it.

Congrats Ange, we would love to see some pics when you are able please!
