Well, I looked it up online and the answer is actually hard to find! People's opinions differ on this topic apparently. So, ladies...if you know...is sterling silver harder or softer than 14k gold?

Question about gold ring.. Gold plated silver ...

I was given a bunch of jewelry from my grandmother and my father has always been fond of this ring (even though it's missing a stone) and was curious about the markings. To my knowledge 925 is silver, right? So this is a gold plated silver ring? Anyone know what the other marking is? Thanks!

How often is too often to polish sterling silver ...

The "tarnish" is actually oxidized silver - silver that has reacted with gases - so polishing it removes minute amounts of the silver. The key of course is "minute." I have a lot of vintage silverplate flatware that's been used and abused for decades, and generally the silver plate has worn through to the base metal in only the very oldest of ...

Diamonds set in sterling silver... | PriceScope Forum

Hi, I would like to ask your opinion about having my 1.0ct diamond set in a rodium plated sterling silver setting. I know that historically, diamonds were commonly set in silver, and more recently the trend to put diamonds in silver has resurfaced.

Mixing metals - PriceScope Forum

Plat./silver are softer and more easily scratched than gold, so gold rings/pendants will eat plat./silver rings/chains (though plat. can presumably be repolished with negligible metal loss). 2. Plat./silver are soft, so they pick up grit and become abrasive, and will eat away at adjacent gold which does exhibit this property.

Costs for Tiffany & Co sterling repairs.... | PriceScope Forum

I purchased an antique Tiffany sterling silver hand mirror at an antique store in the early '80's. I held on to it for years, and finally wanted to get it engraved (it had a spot for engraving and it had never been done previously). I took it to a small Tiffany branch and they were just in awe of it.

Wearing white gold ring next to sterling silver ring ...

Silver is my favorite "White" metal. I think people will notice the silver ring. Given that there are now tarnish resistant silver alloys (it was the copper that tarnished - not the silver: I wonder why not have a silver engagment ring. Sure would look nice.

Question about the durability of silver | PriceScope Forum

I'm a little tired so I'm not sure exactly how to phrase this. I always hear silver isn't very durable, but I've never heard why. I know it's supposed to scratch easily, and it tarnishes, but they don't seem like a big deal.
