    Diamonds white v. translucent/clear

Hello, need some help and opinions. I am in the process searching for and having an eternity band made. the jeweler I've worked with knows im nervous and has basically agreed to make this custom band for me and will allow me not to purchase if it isn't just what I am expecting. this jeweler is...

    Urgent shopping help...

Most prefer white metal prongs to avoid reflecting warm light from the metal back into the stone and increasing the color. For daily use, I'd go with 14k over 18k. 18k is pretty soft and will show scratches more quickly than 14k.

My 2 carat CBI diamond, set in a custom setting made by Durham Rose Jewellers, UK.

@MissGotRocks, thank you! I have really enjoyed sharing the journey here, in part even as a record for myself! Also I haven't really seen any specific feedback about @Durham Rose here so I was keen to share that and do them justice. I don't know how I'm going to contain myself until Wednesday...

Advice on this old mine cut - pre owned

1). It’s not an Old Mine Cut. It’s a Circular Brilliant (see GIA lab report). It’s possibly an Early Modern Brilliant, so possibly from the 1940s. It looks like EMBor Transitional to me, due to its large table and shallow depth. It could be a Transitional, due to its blocky facets. An Old...

E-Ring Dream to E-Ring Nightmare in the Diamond District

Thank you, and you've given me something more to go with. I didn't bother checking the receipt and just went by what SO stated. We will certainly check as soon as we get home. I can factually say SO believes he bought a real diamond ring and was made to believe so. We will check what the receipt...

Suggestions on a Sapphire engagement ring?

So, yes, I've read the thread about being new to gemstones. I promise you, I've been reading up on determining quality of a sapphire and the various treatments, sources, etc... I'm starting to get burned out lol. I'm trying to source an engagement ring and have been actively searching for...

Re: Article: Over Grading of Blue Fluorescent Diamonds Revis Thanks to everyone for the lively discussion of this issue. It’s of importance to the trade and of even more importance to the consumer. Rather than reflecting my opinion, this article is a reporting of diamond industry grading...

    Worried about online dealers

Full disclosure - I'm an online dealer so I may be a bit biased. :) This is not a beat-up on brick & mortar shops (many of my dear friends own B&M jewellery shops), and I recognise that online is not a preferred option for everyone - this is simply my interpretation of why some B&M operations...

Any way to test for platinum and genuine stones at home?

I just bought an sapphire and diamond platinum eternity band on eBay from a reputable seller with good reviews who has a return policy. It just came today and instead of waiting until Tuesday to take it to a jeweler, is there any way to verify the metal and stones at home? To my eye it looks...

    overly cautious jeweler?

I think it's pretty amazing that a guy -- who quoted you an exceedingly reasonable $640 -- is not charging you an additional design fee to work up one or more designs reflecting a number of the "bunch more ideas" you brought to him *after* he had produced CADs based on the initial understanding...

    overly cautious jeweler?

He said that if I wanted any major changes to the design, aside from the minor things that's agreed to that just involve making slight changes to the current one, not reworking it, it would be an extra charge. Which I was totally unaware of until he said so yesterday, I thought that the...

First time buyer looking for advice on round 1.5c rock

I visited the gemologist with the stone yesterday and things went well, I think it was money well spent for piece of mind. I learned more about the diamond I'm looking at and some history on diamonds as well. The consultation went over much of what I already knew about the stone VIA the GIA...

Quantifying Performance Nuances beyond ASET, H&A Photos, etc

Re: Quantifying Performance Nuances beyond ASET, H&A Photos, I am glad someone finally asked what others of us have been thinking. Frankly, this and the other two new resident "experts" that both joined within two days of each other in December elicit suspicions, especially in light of their...

Quantifying Performance Nuances beyond ASET, H&A Photos, etc

Re: Quantifying Performance Nuances beyond ASET, H&A Photos, Sandy, I think you should have crowned yourself an "expert" right away while you were labeling the rest of us. Not once have I ever said that I doubted how beautiful a CBI stone could be. And as I explained in an earlier thread that...

Sent my rings in for repair today...

I just dropped my rings off to be sent in for repairs after my car accident last month. Being that it happened just before the high holy days and my brother's wedding was this past Saturday, I held on to them so I could at least wear them during the wedding and not have them sitting untouched...

Help with an upgrade - 4ct

Well, I definitely don't want that! :) Thank you for all the super helpful tips! I definitely needed to review my diamond facts and your post was just perfect for that  I agree that BN is not ideal for ASET/IS images. But their prices do seem quite a bit lower than the other sources...

Fantastic Appraiser - Patrick Davis (GemSecure)

Hi Everyone, Just wanted to give a great review Patrick Davis (GemSecure) for the appraiser who looked at my stone both when it was loose and newly purchased, and after it was set. He is based in LA, but also receives packages from all over for his appraisals so location shouldn't limit you...

    Small appraisal topic and item...

Hi, sorry it's been a long time. So, I have a small item only in the hundreds of dollars. But, for stud earrings, would you rather have a higher quality in the description and a $775 valuation. Or, lower quality in the description, but the higher valuation of $895? If they are lost, I'd like...

Leon Mege months of bad service and the 5.13 carat Pear

bgray - no one is disputing your or Arkieb1's problems with Leon, I am just telling my story which is different. This is not meant as disrespect to or invalidation of either of you. It is just the truthful telling of my experience.

Leon Mege months of bad service and the 5.13 carat Pear

For the few of you that seem to think that Leon's behavior is to be expected/ i.e. predictable and the person should know what to expect and that Leon operates with very specific rules and so on and so on as if to say that Arkieb1 got what she deserved I say that is a glib and irresponsible...

Calling all jewelers - is this normal?

Well said and I agree with you. You're spot on when you say that there are actually three sides to every story, which again, is why I'm okay with the seller posting here :) The breakdown in communication occurred immediately upon my dissatisfaction with the quality of the necklace. The...
