Lost stone idea

This is just an idea but putting it out there because maybe someone has the resources to make this happen.

There should be a registry for certified stones. When you get a new stone, enter your info into the registry as well as the Gia/AGS number or whatever else may be laser inscribed. If it is found, somebody can look up the number and see who the owner is. If it shows up at a pawn shop, pawn shop can check the owners name and verify the ID of the seller. Obviously there would need to be a way to transfer ownerships around by the stones. If a whole ring is lost, it may not work out if a prong is obscuring the number but it may reunite some people with their stones if the stone itself comes out of the jewelry.

Kind of like the pet microchip registry but for gems?

Yes! Bonus is, most of our stones already have the inscription and all it takes is a loupe to see it,

I love this idea - let's add a layer of security by having owners given a randomized alpha-numeric identifier rather than using names. A third-party organization could maintain the database of IDs. Two-layer security logins generating random log-in codes. Specialised anonymous email addresses (like PreRaphaeliteIsRidiculous@CertifiedDiamondRegistrydotcomm)

Ahhhhh, I love a good spy novel, don't you?

If history is anything to go by, data breaches are not uncommon and might put owners of the most valuable stones at risk. But with enough front-loading for security, it would work, and would be very helpful!

I thought about the security too. I was thinking another option would be that it would only alert you if stone is marked lost or stolen.

Stone is registered at time of sale
I lose it and mark it lost
Somebody finds it and tries to sell it
Purchasing vendor runs it though the system
System flashes that it is a lost stone and gives vendor an email address to contact me
Meanwhile, system notifies me the with enough info to contact the vendor

If it isn’t marked as lost or stolen, perhaps the system gives a code of some sort that must match the one the stones owner has.
