Great story! Am I crazy to think that it's a romantic story of emeralds?

Somehow it also reminds me of those 4 big emeralds on the Topkapi Dagger!
The Topkapi Emerald Dagger.jpg
My husband’s coworker/friend just visited the Topaki museum. I’m sooooio jealous. Their emeralds are amazing.

@voce , it’s not a “glow “ like a Paraiba, in darker emeralds. It’s more like a satiny or metallic sheen, at least to me. It’s like the Instagram video of the pair I posted above. Lighter emeralds are more glowy, but perhaps that sheen is considered a “glow” to some people, I don’t know.

I like this tone too! Does it look like the typical green Palmolive soap under normal light setting? :lol-2: I don’t see as much blue on this, more like a pure green?

Top one is about 1.5 cts and bottom is around 1.3 cts

This might sound like a silly question but how often do you see the sheen on these? I know you keep saying that they are hard to be represented on photos. Does the sheen show up under all sort of light settings in person?

Interesting to see how the lesser weight has bigger spread.

They’re always very deep green, but incandescent light really shows off the sheen. You can see it in some sunlight like in the sunlight picture I took of my set emerald.

The 1.3 carat is smaller in spread, it’s just a more close up photo, so maybe that’s why it looks bigger. In the hand shot of all four on the previous page, you can see them next to each other as 2nd and 3rd stones. The larger of those two is the 1.5 ct.

It’s slightly bluish green, not blue green like some tourmaline with equal parts of each. Definitely not yellowish green either.

Here’s a blue green tourmaline to compare, and a more straight green tsavorite. The tourmaline is much more blue. Bottom photo is the medium toned emerald sitting loose in a setting. Better representation of true color.

I don’t have Palmolive in my house right now to compare, we use Ajax, lol. It’s orange!:rodent:

Love this thread...

A few years ago I found some interesting „emeralds“ from an old german stock of columbian emeralds. An unusual color in some stones - neither emerald nor aquamarine (and not the bright vanadium beryl color from Nigeria).

The small deeper EC and the marquise are from Brazil with a super color (ipad is not able to show it) and two small stones from Afghanistan. Three lighter and very clean emeralds from Columbia - neon color. Two of these intermediate Emerald/Aquamarine beryls.
And one nicely colored Aquamarine.

Here some videos...

Did you ever take a Chelsea filter to them?

Chelseafilter, LW UV 5335F7D5-205E-4571-82C9-5322BAB164C5.jpeg 274D2675-FC46-4F3D-A976-8B8C4516308F.jpeg 3D2577D1-C8F9-40B8-BC93-783C858D01A2.jpeg

First is LW UV - one emerald from Afghanistan and the lighter colored emeralds from Columbia are low in iron so the show fluorescence- a synthetic one would look like a ruby or red spinel showing strong fluorescence.

Chelsea filter is difficult - I have only two arms...

I fixed now the Filter on the lens of my ipad...

Put a ruby next to the emerald to show the difference

By request, this is the medium toned emerald on an extremely overcast day (it started raining five minutes later), it’s near the Paraiba, so I guess it’s “glowy” in the same manner. My darker emeralds don’t do that. Someone requested a sunlight view but this is the best I could do since it’s perpetually a monsoon around here.

It’s not glowy in incandescent light though, it’s more satiny. I cleaned it off and took another incandescent photo to see the transparency better. It’s definitely darker toned in artificial lighting.

Sorry for all the pics, These stones have been in the bank for ages, and I’m enjoying them again.

I do suggest people look at the thread I posted above on emeralds. I swear, I think some people with the last name “Rockerfeller” posted in there!!

+1, assuming all jewels are original, right? Unlike those French crown jewels...paste!

Great example! Thanks for doing that! Cheeky emerald with different looks but both are irresistible!

Any chance of doing the same outdoor picture for your lush medium dark & dark with the medium together? I think that would be very informative. :read:

Somehow I feel that you should also mention the saturation of yours so others will become aware of that factor in addition to tone. I think you have said before that many think dark is best but that isn't the case all the time...

I’m just so afraid to bring my darker ones outside on my hand because they’re smaller, and I’m afraid they’ll fall down, but here’s a cloudy weather shot of my set emerald. It’s my darkest one. Picture doesn’t do it justice.

D9321CE6-7F02-46FC-8E98-36FDD2E9D5A0.jpeg As for saturation and tone, the medium toned emerald is about the 4th row down, 4th column across, and the others are probably 5 to 6 rows down and 5 columns to the right. This is a pure green chart, I don’t have the one for very slightly bluish green. When you start getting this dark and saturated, that’s when that metallic looking sheen appears in Columbian material, I haven’t seen enough material from other regions to comment accurately on the sheen. I saw this automotive paint sample called “emerald green,”
and this is the color and sheen I’m talking about in deep saturated Columbian material.

I think the picture is great and does showcase the uniqueness of the dark tone, maybe it needs to have vivid saturation in order to have that sheen?

It’s more vivid in person. Emeralds are extremely difficult to photograph accurately. It does have a metallic sheen, but it’s more evident in artificial light. There are dark toned emeralds that have a lot of gray in them, but this stone puts all of my best tsavorite to shame it’s so intensely green.

This was a low light and cloudy day, and it rained five minutes later.

I sent it’s larger “sister stone” to an emerald dealer/expert in NYC for an evaluation. The other stone has a chip in it due to some resin that cane out of the pavilion. The stone in this ring is cleaner, but the same exact color, almost like they were cut from the same crystal. This is what he had to say:

“Detailed look at your stone:
I would grade this stone as in the Minor range of enhancement, but almost Moderate. The material is very fine colored and appears to be treated with an Epoxy filler that has aged light grey. Most of the filler is on the pavilion of the stone, with a slight amount on the crown facets. This gemstone would be considered a fine gem quality stone.

I consider the stone pretty clean, it's definitely on the fine side of quality. I don't know how many Emeralds you've seen, but most are not anywhere near this quality.

From what I can tell it appears to be Colombian, but an AGL/GIA analysis would be necessary for more proof. If they are indeed Colombian the color is a very good match for something typically from the Muzo mine.“

So yes, emeralds are a pain to photograph properly.:cry2:

@T L, I don't want to hijack @vik84's emerald thread so I wanted to ask you here. The extra fine $25K elongated emerald, how come the foil/sheen doesn't seem to show up on pictures and videos? Does that only show up under specific light setting and in person viewing only?

Is the lacking of "jardin" causing the ultra glassy but less metallic appearance?

I am just curious and wanted to learn more...

I know, I just asked her for a video of it in incandescent light. It’s really hard to get that sheen in natural diffused light. It’s not the jardin that causes that, but microscopic inclusions. Jardin just interferes with the light, so the less jardin, the better.

This is a horrible picture of a very bluish green medium dark tsavorite. It’s about the same tone as the emerald, but the color just doesn’t get as blue and deep as the emerald. Tsavorite sparkles like crazy though! The emerald just gleams.

Neither but maybe the YG setting helps to tell them apart? My monitor shows a bit of grey tone from it too. It's not fair to compare it next to 1 of your best emerald!

You ever photograph your gems/rings from an arm length? I wonder if the tsavorite would sparkle more that way? I don't know....

Yes, it is next to my best emerald. The vanadium is more grayish under artificial light.

I do, but I hate my hands!! It is pretty sparkly.

I have more problems photographing dark green stones than you can imagine.

It's over $1000! haha

With auctions for decent stones on GemRockAuctions, the prices usually skyrocket within the last few hours of the auction. Also, unlike Ebay auctions which end when the countdown timer reaches zero, Gemrockauctions will not end until 1 minute after the final bid is placed (sort of like a real auction). So if there's two people that are going back and forth at the end of an auction, the price can go pretty high.

Will be interesting to see what happens in 12 days. I think I'll set a reminder and go watch the end to see what happens haha.
