Help me design a heirloom ring

Hi all,

I’m looking to create a special ring to mark the birth of my second son born in January. His brother was born in March a few years ago and I had this aquamarine ring made (https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/aquamarine-step-cut-and-diamond-ring.247280/). There’s lots of symbolism in that ring from the birthstone to where we purchased the stone and the engraving on the setting - Not to mention the ring itself is quite substantial, so this second ring has a lot to live up to!!

I was thinking as garnet is a birthstone for January, to use this mint garnet cut by Jeff White:

It’s 1.37ct, 6.31x5.22mm - so a bit on the small side but the cut and sparkle off the stone is lovely.

I think if I was to use this stone, the setting would need to be something special to really make the ring standout..

What do you think? Any ideas for settings that could work? Or should I look for another stone and save this little guy for a different project?

Some ring designs I’ve been looking at that I like:

Thanks!

Congrats on your new baby boy!!

Wow, you obviously love blingy designs. I really like the idea of pairing that stone with warm colors like the orange or pink you showed above. The stone is beautiful. Do you know who will be doing the setting? I also love mint garnets in rose gold.

Thanks @T L !

Haha actually all my other rings aren’t particularly blingy (other than my topaz cocktail ring) but I want these two rings to be extra special. Maybe going OTT with the setting isn’t the way to go but I can’t think of what else!

I’ll likely be getting it set locally. I’m going to meet the jeweller next week and he’s asked me to bring some ideas of things I like so I’m getting prepared now. If he isn’t quite what I’m looking for, I’d LOVE a cvb ring, but as I’m based in Europe I don’t fancy paying import duties on top of a costly setting!

Rose gold is a good idea for the metal - It could go lovely with the lighter green in the stone.

Here’s my mint surrounded by pink stones, you could do the same with orange, or do an orange or pink halo. I like the shape and cut of your gem better than mine, so trillions would look even better with yours. I also have a mint in rose gold by itself, in a halo, and the rose gold really brings out the blue in mint color. I would avoid bezeling it unless your jeweler is very careful and has the most amazing bezel work.

@T L I love your ring - I actually used it as a bit of inspiration when playing around with an earlier idea for the stone using some red spinels I have:
85CE91B8-4508-4BA5-9A04-2437A85B25F0.jpeg

But canned it as I was worried the green and red would look too christmassy. Maybe oranges would work better!

@Hivona omg they’re gorgeous, thanks for sharing - I especially love the first one with the mixed stone halo. I’d want to do something special with the side profile with that design though - maybe something with an “O” As that’s what my sons name starts with.

The colours on the second ring (pinky purples) keep pulling my eyes back too!

I love those spinels. I think a darker tsavorite might look more Christmasy, like these two gems I posted back in 2010, in a thread about Christmas colors, lol!

I love the inspiration rings., especially the top two. Congrats on the baby boy.:appl:

I'm wondering what you mean by heirloom piece. If you mean to pass on this ring to future generations, I would avoid a traditional bezel. Reason being is that after decades, the green might need a bit of repolishing, and it's a no can do with a traditional bezel without destroying the setting. That said, there are hybrid settings that give you the look of the bezel, but the stone could be gotten out by porting the prongs open. This is why I love Yvonne's hexagon settings, although clearly you're hunting for something extra special! :geek2:

Of the first ring options posted, I love the last three. I really like the third that says "Ivy" on the photo in particular. I agree with doing a prong setting instead of bezel, too, if the goal is to pass it down.

@voce yes I’d like to give the rings to the boys when they’re older for them to give to their S/O or daughter etc.. my family has a ring that has been past down, with each generation resetting the stones and adding a new stone - it goes to the eldest son though so will go to my brother, however I love the idea and want to start something similar for my own little family.

Prongs definitely make a lot of sense then - I didn’t even think of that!

He was born on the 3rd so maybe a three stone ring would make sense.. in rose gold.. with the mixed stone halo.. will see what the jeweller thinks!

Just fixed my phone's auto correct

I think a 3 stone in rose gold will be fantastic! :)

I saw this one the other day and liked the combo of the blue and pink. It reminds me of the style of a couple of the vintage styles I wonder if your mint garnet might have a similar effect with some dark green or blue melee or rich pink assuming you wanted to do a halo. Btw think @elle_71125 has a gorgeous mint green stone in rose gold and the combo is

Wow that’s gorgeous @meely! Yes definitely rose gold is the way to go.

I actually love the pink diamonds in the other ring you posted. If only they weren’t so expensive!! Perhaps a pale pink sapphire melee would work instead..

So many options!!

Hi, do you mind me asking where you found this ring? It looks like the sapphire I really wanted.

Thanks for those who remembered this ring is mine! As they said, the ring was made by CVB (Caysie van Bebber), and I found the pretty lavender blue emerald cut sapphire at Africa Gems online.

Mint and emerald green make a nice pairing & not too common. I'd say the catch is to keep the tones very far apart - else it turns into missmatch. I have a few types of calibrated emerald settings in mind writing this.

Finally back to update with the finished ring!

I went with white gold in the end as it was my husband’s preference. I also ended up with a very busy design as I was trying to fit so many things in:mrgreen2: but I love the end result- so blingy and different to all my other rings.
