HI:

Deb, I read this post while on vacay and did not have time to reply. Have you come to any decisions about selling other jewellery to fund a large diamond purchase?

cheers--Sharon

Not yet. The month of September is full of medical appointments, but my fake diamond ring came. I am just waiting for privacy (no daughter around) to unpack it!

I personally would keep the largest red spinel. Even if you do not wear it, spinel prices have been going up every year and will continue to do so, and I believe that will be something that you might regret. I would sell the smaller spinel and any of the other pieces you do not wear, the less expensive pieces via Loupetroop if you need help enlist someone like valuer David Atlas to help you and send the more expensive pieces to Grace at Jewels by Grace or Erica at Love Affair Diamonds for consignment.

The ring/piece of jewellery I wear most is the 5.34 OEC. I dress like a bag lady most of the time and unless people really look or know me, or I'm dressed up to go out somewhere special no one even assumes it's real, and to be honest I like that. I wear it for myself not for anyone else.

IMHO one single standout piece you love and wear all of the time is worth the cost provided that it gets worn and doesn't sit in your jewellery box.

Yes, this exactly. PPW is what I generally go by. Price per wear. So if you are going to wear and enjoy a piece often it is worth the extra cost because PPW makes it a good purchase. IMO.

I don’t wear any jewellery except the same heirloom earrings. Even so, I’m not selling anything in my inventory. These items cannot be duplicated or found anymore. I might enjoy wearing them again one day.

This is me! I go through phrases and enjoy stuff at different times in my life. I started selling and giving away all my yellow gold a couple years ago... and low and behold, now I’m into yellow gold.

I have just been re-reading this thread and I really thank each and every one of you for such wise advice. Some of your advice sank in on the first go round and some of it took a second reading. You are all so wise! No one who commented did not give me real food for thought. Thank you so much for bending your minds to my problems!

Someone said I should try wearing a ring with a simulant of 3 carats to see how I felt about that size. (Several of you asked if I would actually wear a 3 carat ring!) I spent a lot of today looking at different simulants to see what i should try, because I thought that was a very good idea. I went from the cheapest (because this was not supposed to be a forever piece of jewelry) to more expensive pieces (because people who bought the lower-end pieces complained that they rattled in their settings or looked like glass to others). In the end I was looking at lab created moissanite in white gold for about $1600 and I thought, "This is crazy! I want $1600 to go towards a 3 carat diamond one day!" So I have to look for an inexpensive 3 carat ring that isn't too clanky with which to experiment.

I will e-mail you ds, if you really think you might like to buy my large red spinel ring. (I have two great red spinel rings, both of which have Pricescope threads, but I know which one you mean. You once wrote that if you were going to build a ring you would build it exactly the way I did mine, which is a huuuuge compliment coming from you!) I never wear it, whether or not I buy another diamond. So it is in pristine condition. I wore it once or twice for an hour or two! But no pressure. I am not buying anything now and it is very happy in my safe deposit box. :))

Deb/AGBF

I think trying a sim for the size is a great idea! There are good threads in the fabulous fashion jewellery section. You do NOT have to pay a fortune for moissanite these days :)

Sort of like a bucket list.
This is a great idea and now I’m pondering. Perhaps there is already a thread on this but if not, maybe it’s a good one to start? What are the PSers jewellery bucket lists?

Thank you, pearaffair. I already bought a "Diamonique" ring, however. I have been discouraged from wearing it because it is too big and it turns around and around on my finger. I may have to go to my safe deposit box and get a band or two to hold it in place. I have ring sizers and checked my ring size with them before buying. I am still, supposedly, a size 6 so I bought a size 6, but this ring seems huge.

Oh how annoying! I wonder if they sent the right size. Do you have some way of checking? Perhaps the seller would remedy the error if they were wrong.

Deb, guess what! I went and bought an emerald cut solitaire that I will get sized for me. I just want to wear a rectangular shape and on my hand and seen if I like it as much as I think I will. I don’t want to seriously consider an emerald cut without test driving one.

No. No decision yet.

Health concerns have overwhelmed other concerns for now. My daughter has a doctor's appointment set for every day this week. (In another thread I mentioned that she was hospitalized last Wednesday night and discharged from the hospital on Sunday.) She already saw the gastroenterologist. Today she sees her internist. Tomorrow she sees her psychiatrist (because in the hospital they found one of her meds was adversely affecting her heart and now she cannot sleep at night since she was taken off it). On Friday she sees the infectious disease specialist. In the meantime I was supposed to have surgery on October 2 but it was cancelled because something was wrong with my blood and I was sent to a hematologist. So everything has been at sixes and sevens here! I am afraid diamonds are not at the top of the priority list.

But thank you for caring, Ellen. You are a pal!

Oh Deb! I had no idea (clearly, or you know I wouldn't have asked). Praying things get better for both of you, quickly.

I am posting to follow. Giving you good wishes on you and your daughter's health concerns.

I did a mini version of jewelry downsizing and getting a more expensive ring. My only small regret, was selling an emerald ring. Green is my favorite color and so it's on my bucket list to someday get another green ring, whether it be an emerald, tsavorite, or demantoid garnet. No hurry.

Like someone else said, the more expensive the piece the longer it takes to find a buyer. So you will need to practice patience. But I think this is a good time to do it, when you have the time and energy.
