I'd say it is real.
It's a real clear thing, sitting on a real box, held by a real hand.

Might be a large natural diamond, a synthetic diamond, some glass, plastic, acrylic, glopped-together superglue, or even ice.
But yeah, it's real alright unless you have a magic camera that can photograph things that are not real.

IOW ... when you ask whether it's real please state ........ a real what.
Where did you get it?
What did you pay?

Reasonable questions.

It was handed down to me but with no info or documentation.

Now we're getting somewhere.

Was the person who left it to you after their death rich or poor?
A jeweler?
A professional working in the mining industry at a diamond mine?
A homeless person?
A highly educated person?
A gullible person who fell for get-rich scams?

Can you get better macro pics?
Hire a professional photographer with a full-frame DSLR and a real macro lens, preferably with a bellows extension so the subject fills up the frame for maximum resolution.

Even then nobody can grade gems with even the best pics.
But the best pics may rule out it being a diamond.

Clues please. Clues.
Help us help you.

True I’ll take it to a jewellers for testing. No history as I didn’t know him very well. What would it be worth (roughly) if it was legit?

If real a jeweler may tell you it's fake but offer you a tiny amount of money for it.
If real you are completely out of your league and are almost certainly going to be ripped off when you try to sell it.

Real rough diamonds are bought, sold, and processed by a very small, very private, and very secretive community of professionals.
You and I are not in their exclusive club.

I'd give GIA a call and ask them if they can determine whether a rough diamond is real or not.
If their answer is no, ask THEM where and to whom you should take it.

Be careful.
