Hi,
I'm on the hunt for a MRB diamond for an engagement ring however have quite a small budget. Using the information I've found on pricescope I've found this diamond which is almost perfect except for the SI2 feather...

It's $2,230 and I've got it on hold so need to make a decision asap, would love some input.

To give you an idea on what I'm after
Cut is priority
Colour H and above
Clarity eye clean
Carat anything with a 5.9-6mm diameter
Budget ideally closer to $2,300 but up to $2,450

Setting will be BGD tapered classic solitaire in yellow gold or something similar

Thank you!

I think it depends on where the feather is and it’s size. You should contact the vendor to get more information. Alternatively, you can call the GIA and give them the report number and they can tell you about the characteristic.

I've linked a video of the diamond so you can see the feather, not sure if it worked or not. But if not, here it is

On the table... obviously the diamond is magnified tremendously than how it will be viewed IRL. I cannot imagine it would be eye-visible but these are questions you should ask of someone who can see the stone in person.

I like it and I would personally buy it and see it in person to make the final decision. You'll want to look at it in office, house and natural light. If she has good vision, it might always look like a hair and drive her crazy.

Here is the feather.

Thank you for the responses, I appreciate it. I've zoomed out to see what it may look like in real life and I don't think it's going to be an issue. When we went to look at diamonds in person we were shown a few SI2 diamonds and she could only see the inclusions when looking through a loop. I'm hoping the cut will make it even harder to see the feather.

The problem is, we are located in Australia so have to pay a customs fee and 10% GST when it arrives. We would lose that if we had to return it

I guess my main concern is if the feather is a problem in terms of durability?

It looks like it would be eye-clean to me* but sometimes when you see feathers at angles you can pick them out (sometimes this matters,
sometimes not so much). Ask JA if it is eye-clean or if it has a durability issue.

When I initially saw the stone the first SA I chatted to said it was eye clean. Then when I decided to put it on hold I asked a different SA for an ideal scope and a gemologist to tell me their opinion on the diamond.

However this diamond didn't have an IS available so I assumed it is coming from elsewhere. And that SA said she would assess the diamond herself and she said it may not be eye clean and if hit right, the feather could increase. This was via the online chat so I think both opinions are based on the video alone.

Is it best I buy the stone and ask that before they ship it to me they have a gemologist review the stone in person?
Anything I should ask in particular?

There are so many stones available in this size range. Why take the chance on one with a huge feather right on the table?

I am limited with my budget, this diamond came down to $2080 with my referral code. It had all the specs I was after and was the most "eye clean" without the black inclusions the other diamonds had. I guess I'll just have to wait on the gemologist review. If it doesn't work out, I'll return it before it gets shipped to me and keep looking. I personally think it looks great and the price was right.

That all makes sense. Have a look at it and see. Nothing to lose other than your time and effort.

Update: Long story short, James Allen accidently sent the stone to Brian Gavin before inspecting the stone and providing an ideal scope. However, Brian Gavin was kind enough to check the stone and confirmed it was a really good SI2 and he didn't note any problems with the stone stating it was really good value. I didn't expect a full detailed inspection or idealscope as I didn't purchase the stone from them so was grateful just to have someone check it before they set it. I've finally received the completed ring and I can't see the feather without a loupe. To my untrained eye it looks amazing.
However I have no idea what an excellent cut diamond should even look like.
Inside our house (low light) it looks almost opaque white. I don't know if it's milky or cloudy....or if it's supposed to look like this.
Outside it looks more clear and sparkly.
I'll attach photos of what I mean.

Would love your thoughts.

Clean it. Either get a magnasonic ultrasonic or soak in very very hot distilled water with blue dawn or mr. clean citrus (not sure what you have in Oz) and check it with a loupe. Diamonds get filthy fast. I’m sure BG would have told you if it was milky or hazy.

I think it’s beautiful.

Congratulations. That's a beautiful ring and diamond! Looks bigger than a 0.78 and so clean for a SI2.

Maybe you can clean it and make a video so the experts can chime in?

 I think it looks amazing! And how nice of BGD to do that for you! There is nothing about your ring that says “budget” to me ... just bright & b-e-a-ooootiful! I hope it’s loved and adored for years to come.

As for how the color appears indoors ... a couple thoughts: I’d reiterate giving it a quick cleaning/soak; diamonds are grease/oil magnets, including from your own skin. Also, what color are the surroundings/wall color where you’re finding the diamond appears ‘different’? Assuming you’re using a cell phone to take the pictures (?), what color is the phone on the side that is facing the diamond when taking pictures? All of these things can impact diamond appearance - especially in pics. Natural light sources or artificial? For example, below is a pic of my K-color diamond, taken with my cell phone that has a white/glittery phone case ... same diamond as the one in my avatar taken with the same cell phone ... environment is the only difference.

Thank you everyone, I appreciate all the comments and advice. I just gave it a clean with some dishwashing liquid and wow! I thought I was so careful not to touch the diamond so it wouldn't get dirty...but obviously I wasn't as careful as I thought. It appears a lot more clear and sparkly.

I'm starting to realise how different it looks in different lighting, it truly glows in the dark when I have it in a dark corner or dark cupboard with a light source behind me, I love it!
The only time it looks "cloudy/opaque white" is when my own shadow is blocking the light source or at very certain angles in dark areas of the house. But I guess I can't expect it to sparkle when there is no light to reflect.
I'll test it one last time in the morning when there's natural light inside the house but I believe my problem is solved.

This forum has been so helpful and I'm glad I came across it before such an important purchase!

Does the stone have Fl? Maybe that’s why you’re getting different effects with different lighting situations. That’s often the beauty with Fl stones. They’re chameleons.

edit to add: I just looked at the GIA. No Fl. Nvm. :)

@sargie Glad you have found some peace of mind with your purchase. Many of us are quite diligent with cleaning our jewelry often; I keep a soft toothbrush & dawn dish soap at both my kitchen and master bathroom sinks, and give my ER a quick pass a few times a day when washing my hands so that it is always clean & sparkly.

That’s a K?! Wow! Looks Ah-mazing!

Thank you; my WF SA suggested it was a high-K, and I do believe that because I have noticed less body tint from that of my previous WF-ES-K when viewing it from the side.
