What would you do if fear was not a factor and you could not fail?

I am curious. If failing was not an issue and fear was not at play what would you do differently? I think if we are honest most of us live life a bit differently due to fear to some degree. What if fear was not a factor? What one thing would you do that you otherwise would not attempt to do?

Move out of CT. Seriously it has its good points (beautiful foliage in the fall, quaint small towns etc) but the taxes keep going up up up. In an ideal world we would like to move to NC and ironically a job was posted in DH's company where he could transfer just this week.

I worry that we will not financially make it somewhere else since his salary will be less, at least here we know what we need to get by. Also we know how CT operates (not the friendliest but you don't have to worry about folks all up in your business) in the South it is friendlier, more open and that might not be our cup of tea. Then if we regret the move and want to come back with the housing costs as they are here, we might not be able to afford it.

The thought of moving is bad enough but also having to move two kids and all these pets....the stress of all that is not worth it right now.

I greatly admire folks that have the guts to move out of this state, it is much easier to just go with the status quo.

I so agree with you. Change is hard especially with a family of kids and pets. And the saying “the enemy you know” can be extrapolated to moving from an imperfect place to perhaps a better place. Or perhaps not. I definitely think one should visit if possible for an extended period of time before making a big move like that. Wishing you all the best no matter what you decide. I am also a big believer that there is more than one good situation for each family. And all that really matters is that you’re all together and somehow it all (most of the time) works out. Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately, I think money is more a factor than fear. I love to move. I would move anywhere, any time. My only holdback (besides money) is that I require so much medical intervention. All my "dreams" involve moving of course, because it's the one thing we can't actually do.

I'm sorry Lyra. I understand completely because every time we think of moving my dh reminds me what about my doctors? It's not so easy finding decent/good doctors when there are challenging medical issues at play.

Me too! No thank you. Have you tried parasailing? To me that is as close to jumping out of a plane I will ever get! Haha.

Yes, I have in Mexico It was a lot of fun!!!. But my friend had difficulty landing and narrowly missed the side of a retaining wall by the beach....scary. We had a few marguerites after that.....

I think my answer would be move to the California coast. Or if we could move out of the country and still get healthcare that would be an option. The Spain coast perhaps. Somewhere near the ocean. I can never be too far from the sea and preferably would want to live right by the sea with it in my backyard. If we are moving this would be one of my prerequisites.

Sharon, we bought my mental mother in law a parachute jump from 35,000 feet this year for her 74th birthday, and she LOVED it. If she can, my dear, then YOU definitely can!

@missy I certainly do! For her 73rd Birthday last year we bought her a Wing Walk on a bi-plane. She loved that too - she's become quite fearless in her old age & wants to go forward without wondering what it would be like to do things. She's my hero!

@canuk-gal Sharon, she went up with a woman who was very nervous & by the time it came to jump, she was in tears & very distressed. Her jump partner pushed out anyway as they had agreed on the ground that this is what he would do, and she also loved it! She was beaming when she had finished, downed a glass of champagne in one & immediately asked to go again

I'd buy a lottery ticket.

Are you afraid to buy a lottery ticket? I say go for it. You have to be in it to win it or something like that lol. No need to be scared. Unless I am missing something...

I always feel like its such a waste of money and a colossal failure to even participate. So if I knew it wouldn't be a failure, I would definitely buy one.

Yeah I hear you. I never buy lottery tickets. Well almost never. I think maybe once every 2 years I buy one but then when I hear the winner wasn't in NYC I never check to see if I got any numbers. LOL I am that lazy.

I greatly admire folks that have the guts to move out of this state, it is much easier to just go with the status quo.

My husband and I upped and moved out of our home state (HI) which I felt was really scary too be had literally everything is a plane ride away and everything needed to be shipped to our new state (WA). It was scary. By luck I got a job in WA after college. I started applying everywhere a few months before graduation because the job market in HI isn’t that great and the COL is kind of insane.

When I was offered a position my husband quit his job to follow me even though he didn’t have anything lined up.

It was rocky! At the time I was working full time while going to school so we didn’t have enough time or money to fly up and check out areas we’d like to live in. Our first apartment here was not very nice at all but the combo of needing it to be affordable one just my income, pet friendly, and close enough to Seattle on short notice was a lot to overcome. No one wanted to rent to us and I remember at one point offering to pay all the rent upfront.

It was scary at the time but looking back at it now it was fun! We drove down to CA a week or two after we moved here. It was a first for both of us. I still remember our first night moving in with our giant boxes we flew up with us because I needed to cram in as much as possible since shipping from HI is expensive.

If it’s something you want to do I would recommend it. Everyone told us Seattle was too dangerous and it was as expensive as HI so why go, but it’s been so great! Just the experience of doing it was worth it.

I’d love to be able to run sprint races again. I was good at sprinting as a child and teen. My disc herniations make running impossible.

Also - do stand up comedy.

I think I’d like to retire sooner rather than later. I’m getting close to being burnt out. :wall:

Moving out of NY would be nice but the kiddos are here and I couldn’t leave them. ♥ They are my heart. ♥

The Californian coast is beautiful @missy but I wouldn’t enjoy worrying about the earthquakes and fires. :shifty:

Yes, as my dh keeps reminding me of all that. My family being here. The fires and the earthquakes and other issues California has. Plus my doctors are all on the east coast. So for all those reasons we are probably not moving to California. Plus cost of living would pretty much be the same so wouldn't be saving any money there especially because I want to live on the water. So yeah it's a dream that probably will not come true.

Truth be told I do love living where we live and I realize there is no perfect place (for me). But when I dream of Nirvana it is in a climate where we can enjoy outdoor activities all year long and not deal with ice and snow and freezing temps. That would be perfection for me. But nothing is perfect so we have to appreciate the wonderful things we do have and enjoy and I do love change of seasons and the smell of Spring and the gorgeous colors and the crisp autumn air and the light in autumn and the leaves falling etc. I also occasionally enjoy the beauty of snow and the hot sun on my skin during warm summer days. I do not love not being able to enjoy activities outdoors during the extreme hot and cold temps however. But as I wrote there is no perfect situation so I am (mostly) content and happy with where we live now.

As for retiring sooner vs later I heartily recommend it if you can dear @Slick1. One of the best career decisions I ever made was retiring lol. Not kidding. I loved my career and I loved helping others and while I enjoyed it life was good. But once I got burned out it was exhausting and I never regretted retiring when I did. It was just the right time for me to leave my profession. I accomplished a lot (as you did and are still) and am satiated completely when it comes to that. Hope whenever the time is right for you it is an easy decision and you never look back. Retirement rocks. It really does.

So glad it worked out for you guys. That was super brave of you to take that chance and make that move and change everything you knew. Woohoo to taking calculated risks and for those changes to work out so well. :appl:

I have always wanted to do that.
I actually had it planned and a space reserved but work hours changed so I had to cancel.
Before I could get a chance again, I had a blood clots(dvt x4) over a few years and got put on blood thinners for life. No jumping for me :{

A complete change of career, such as starting my own catering business. I would love to have my own food truck!

However, the day job pays well enough to allow me to dabble with pop up kitchen events from time to time, so all is well.

DK :))
