DH and I are going to Manhattan soon and he wants me to bring and wear my jewelry. I don’t want to use the room safe because it can be compromised so easily. So what if I bought this and secured it discreetly to the closet rod or something? Or give it to front desk to place in big safe?

Thanks for opinions

its basically a plastic box, better then nothing maybe, but not a safe.
Might be less safe than nothing because it attracts attention.

Of my expensive things, I bring only what I can wear all at once if I am staying in a hotel rather than with a friend/family. In NYC... I can wear A LOT at once haha. If I’m not wearing it, it’s in a carrier in a zip pocket in my purse. I don’t mind walking around with a lot of jewelry on while there - I know some people feel unsafe on the subway or whatever but I see many other ladies with a lot of jewelry in the areas I’m in.

Bring only what you will wear. Better safe than sorry and peace of mind rules over bringing more bling imo. And enjoy your trip! So many great places to enjoy. Are you visiting any diamond/gem dealers?

Missy, no, not planning on it. We had an unexpected situation pop up and I’m on strict no buy for 1-2 years or until it gets comfortable around here. Nothing horrific, and it’s nice to be in a position where I say “no jewelry” and that is how we pass this thing that was imposed on us.

I also wanted to meet with some pricescope people (we are staying in midtown) but DH has us so scheduled (he’s manic and obsessed and loves NY—my first time— )so the only down time I have is that Friday for a few hours, say 9am to 3pm while he attends a breast cancer conference at MSK.

We are flying in on a Thursday morning and leaving I think Sunday night.

I have Bell’s palsy now, so I figured I better keep that time open to rest.

I’m sure we will be back, so I’ll save jewelry and meeting people for when I am feeling better. It will be more fun that way.

Unless someone wants to meet for tea or something because you live right there etc and it’s not a big deal to get to me.

Take what you will wear. I live near msk...just west of hss. It is very safe. Midtown can be more questionable. There are a lot of homeless shelters in unexpected areas that can be problematic.

I'd leave it at home.
I'd find a nice way to tell the hubby to mind his own business, and bring his own jewelry.

I've no idea who paid for it, but ...
If in his mind he thinks he bought it and that gives him control over how he gets to show off "his" jewelry on "his" wife that would give me pause.

I hope that's not what's happening.
Nobody lives like that anymore, do they?

No, I buy for me and he thought my sapphires and diamonds were so pretty that they would sparkle when we went out for dinner and shows etc. I brought it up last night and he doesn’t even remember saying it.

But, hey, thanks for the solidarity and having my back. I appreciate it!

Just going to bring my fakes or wear only what I bring.

We will be in the mid 50s and like between 6th and 7th (8th?.) near the park. I haven’t actually looked to see where MSK is, but I think it’s pretty close. I’d anything, I may hit the natural history museum or something like that. MOMA. Etc

Thank you. I am looking forward to Christmas decorations in the big Apple! Shows, restaurants, ferry etc. I’m expecting it to be a lot of fun, and it’s for DH’s 50th birthday so we are also going to a hockey game. (We don’t have that here lol) oh and the rockettes

Yay!!! That's starting to be a requirement when I travel lol. Helps me to get really relaxed and in vacation mode. When we go to Vegas I need the spa bc Vegas is so stimulating I need some tranquility. I've heard NYC has incredible spas!!! I haven't tried them in NYC because Broadway is my spa lol! We go to 2 shows per day, all we do is eat and go to Broadway shows lol! Hope you find a relaxing spa!

Not really near the park. That area is very commercial. Hotels and businesses. Not bad at all, just not residential. Well located for theatre. Hubby will need to cross town from west to east for work.

Have a great time!

Aww sorry, I wish I could. We are at our beach house til further notice and have been here for 6 plus months now. Have a wonderful trip and I hope your Bell's Palsy is gone by the time you visit.

The only spa I have been to in NYC is Bliss in Soho and it was pretty blissful. I just got a massage there as I don't do facials or nails etc. It was lovely. Very relaxing indeed. Though I am generally not into having others massage me and prefer my dh's touch only. But I am weird that way. It was a gift from a girlfriend or I never would have experienced it at all.

@bling_dream19 I am with you. Broadway (and other NYC offerings such as opera, philharmonic etc) is my spa too. That and fine dining in NYC restaurants. Cannot beat a day of shows and eating. :appl:

I think bring what's insured, wear what you bring, and enjoy yourself. Maybe if u want to lock it up, have it at the front desk safe bc it will be on them if something happens.

I never bring extra jewelry on a trip. I bring only what I'm wearing, take it off for bed and put it on the next morning. I'm far too likely to lose stuff otherwise.

That's my favorite thing to do in NYC!!! And bling shopping would put it over the top!

Will you be coming here the 1st weekend of December? If so, be prepared for the fact that Midtown will be a madhouse. The ceremonial lighting of the tree in Rockefeller Center is happening on that Wednesday (December 4) this year & there is a substantial influx of tourists who come for that and stay on through the weekend; a goodly number of hotels are completely sold out. Those tourists will joined on the weekend by day-trippers also eager, e.g., to do holiday shopping, go ice skating, fill the seats at Radio City Music Hall where the Rockettes' Christmas Spectacular is performed as often as 5x/day.

In the hope of alleviating some of the pedestrian congestion, the City is experimenting this year, for the first time, with closing some of the streets around Rockefeller Center to vehicular traffic:
But that also will exacerbate the normally heavy traffic congestion -- and disrupt service along some bus routes. Would your husband be up for hoofing it to MSK? If you're staying at, say, the Conrad Midtown (on W. 54th between 6th & 7th Avenues, a block away from the Museum of Modern Art), it's a 1.8 mile walk to MSK (if the conference is at the main hospital):

Pick-pocketing isn't a hallmark of being in NYC; it's been 20+ years since anyone I know has had their pocket picked or their handbag "invaded" or grabbed But the holiday season can also bring "tourists" of a different sort; there were some bands of pickpockets from South America last year who thought it worth their while to visit NYC. So that's why I'm thinking there's a greater possibility of pick-pocketing while you & husband are out and about than getting robbed your jewelry.

I hope I haven't alarmed you -- I love living here & want everyone who visits to have a splendid time! But I know, from being on TripAdvisor's NYC forum, how gobsmacked by the holiday congestion many out-of-towners (and locals too) are when they encounter it for the first time, so I wanted to let you know ahead of time.

P.S. TimeOutNY hasn't yet posted a 2019 descriptive round-up of store window holiday displays, but here's the one from last year to give you an idea of which major stores are known for that tradition; sadly, no displays this year, however, at Barneys or Lord & Taylor because they've shuttered their doors.

Re: spa, I have been to the Ritz Carlton spa many times (many times this year, even, lol) and have always had a good experience. It’s located just south of Central Park by 6th Ave so would be a very easy walk from where you’re staying.

Oh, I asked him and he takes the subway to MSK, but he might also walk. I have a pac safe slash proof crossbody purse and we both use RFID block Wallets (he has his card numbers stolen a few years ago)

My friend was also telling us yesterday about the madhouse at LGA because of the construction.
