Lectin - free diet?

I’m newly diagnosed with osteoporosis. Before I start Fosamax, I consulted a naturopath who has me trying a lectin - free diet. I’ve got some herniated discs from a work accident, and have a fair amount of pain, radiation and discomfort, so she has suggested a trial period of no lectins to see if that helps with inflammation with that, and also my acid reflux and gastritis. Her goal is to improve my gut health, and my pain/discomfort levels so that I sleep better. So far I’ve removed tomatoes, potatoes, all legumes, wheat (was off that anyway), quinoa, spinach etc. It’s really hard as I ate most of these daily - esp chickpeas (hummus), quinoa and tomatoes. My acid reflux and hip pain go through ebbs and flows, so it’s hard to tell if the dietary changes are responsible for slight improvement. Sooooo, am wondering if anyone has given this a try, and what you found if so. It’s worth a go to see, but certainly isn’t easy!

I don't think I've even heard of Lectin!

What are its impacts on the body?

I know about this because I was considering going lectin free due to my Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism. I have adopted a compromise and no longer eat beans/seeds/nuts and have been doing this for about 1 and a half or 2 years...I am losing count. My thyroid antibodies have gone down so that is a positive move. However I have lost too much weight and working towards getting some weight back. Cutting out nuts was my downfall weight wise because I was eating lots of nuts every day. I miss them but they can be inflammatory for some people.

@Begonia I am following an Auto Immune Paleo diet. Google it and see if you think it could help you. Also google the Plant Paradox. I used to be vegan but had to stop due to my health issues. I miss being a vegan. I am now a Pescatarian. Or haha a pickytarian because eating an AIP way is definitely being a picky eater.

FYI

To be clear I am not advocating this one way or another as I am not sure the science backs this up. But I felt given my health issues I had nothing to lose so I am doing this for now.

Hi Missy :wavey:

Sorry to hear about your Hashi’s and hypo. That sucks. Having to give up these wonderful food groups sucks too. I’ll absolutely check out the autoimmune paleo diet! I always appreciate your help girl!!!

Naturopath told me about his book - I YouTubed some interviews. He’s rather off putting, which doesn’t help when you are trying to learn about his theories. I didn’t want to buy the book (library has too many holds) but I may have to. I’m really not sure about this, but until I read the book, I can’t criticize. My big concern is the foods that I’ll have to give up (beyond the above list). I think I’ll give the trial elimination diet and reintroduction a go. Couldn’t hurt.

Jeez, trying to give up wheat was hard enough! (Says the lady who made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for her sons, and ate 3 today).

Always my pleasure @Begonia to share anything that might be helpful. As far as giving up stuff and your yummy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies let me share that Greg has figured out a delicious recipe for butter cookies and more that he can bake for me that are every bit as delicious. When you are ready I will search for the recipe he came up with in case you want to try it. It is gluten free and free of all the ingredients I cannot have. It is AIP compliant. And that is not easy lol. It tastes every bit as delicious as the "regular" cookies. Took him some time to figure out the perfect recipe though. Trial and error.

Right???

not to mention legumes of all types. I’m not being very successful at cutting things out I’m afraid.

Another gluten-free person over here that would love the recipe for those cookies - yum! :appl:

OK ladies, here you go. These are delicious. Hope you enjoy if you bake these.

Greg used a cookie press to make these into the christmas cookie shape posted above.
