What a stunner? What's the price range for something like this? I'd assume over 10k

Oh not at all. It's set in platinum with 0.63ct diamonds weighing 16g total. From a shop that sells second hand items imported from Japan.
Definitely 4 digit and some haggling.

Congratulations!! It’s beautiful and nicely large:) welcome to the star family on PS! Does it have a name?

Thank you! Im stuck with seaglow at the fair venue waiting for a cab. Inspiration will set in after dinner. Too hungry and am seeing stars (sapphire) haha :)

@YC, you have that amazingly celestial star ring also. Do you have a favorite I’d the 2? Do you ever wear them together?
Bluegemz, nooo.... never together. I am still getting used to larger sized rings and two seems a bit too much for me to handle at the moment. :))

Some star sapphire fun. Wish has been passed to my jeweller to be sent to the lab. I realise it fluoresces with my uv torch but not the 9ct one. So we brought out other lighter coloured star sapphires and though pale, they fluoresce too. Chances are Wish and them are from the same mine at Mogok.

How interesting and fun! Love the pics of more stars. Also, I would LOVE to have one of those giant ones as a desk stone. They are rustic but beautiful.

thinking about lavender stars, there is such a huge range of colors and they look so different. Just browsing lavender stars.

Of these shades of lavender and purple, which would you all chose? Color alone, I think I’d choose these. It’s amazing how they each have such a personality based on star, star color, translucency, hue and tone, etc etc.

Sorry for reposting AGAIN, but I can’t resist this image, ( bottom one) . Lavender is next for me ( or so I hope. But with stars, we never know what we will find.)

I wish! :)

Lavenders and purples probably Ceylon or African. Not much of those in Burma now.

Idk. The vivid purples are stunning but there's something oh so feminine and less in your face with the softer, more muted dusky shades.

Maybe 1 of each? :kiss2:

@Bluegemz All are fine (up to some conventional ranking favoring the transparent & whatnot; leaving the long pink aside), but the first (round, deep purple) is something else - even a cab of such intense colour would be news. Seeing a coloured star (as opposed to white asterism) that is still complete & strong is an event.

Very modest additions. I finally got my black star sapphire and start ruby set. Both of them were cheapies, but Daniel M made them look very nice! Too bad it's dusk.

I love that black star stacker, although despite the color is usually unfavorable I just think that they're so mysterious and fem fatale!
Lovely!

I love it because I snagged it for less than $5 on Ebay, and it's a nice, not-wonky star!

Came across this 18.5ct star sapphire ring at an estate jewelry store yesterday. The sapphire measures 14.5x10.7x11.1 and is the most translucent sapphire I have ever seen. The star is very strong. Never seen a lavender star before so not quite sure what to make of it. Opinions on value relative to blue star sapphires would be much appreciated. Please ignore the $29,000 price tag, I was assured it was a typo! :)

What a great purple!!! I don’t know about how the color valuation would compare with the classic, top quality blue star. I imagine the saturated, classic blue sapphire colors hold a premium because they are of mainstream consciousness. Therefore, I believe they tend to be more expensive than fancy colored sapphires in general. That said, there are always exceptions, such as rare pad and yellow stars.and purple is highly desirable.

Qualities affecting price are color, color saturation, clarity, translucence, star strength, color zoning, breaks and striations in the star legs, and of course inclusions. Given all of these qualities, we must make our best choices based on preferences.

For example, I am most fond of those without any hex pattern showing, extremely translucent, decent, centered star with no broken legs, and in larger sizes. So that means that I am willing to accept small crystal inclusions or some color zoning....etc. but this is all highly personal and stats are always beautiful in their combinations of qualities. Big size is a huge plus, as each quality becomes more rare in a large size.

I recently saw a beautiful purple for around 6k, unset. Not as large as the one you are showing but beautiful. I say follow your heart on wether it truly wows without distractions.

personally, I love that color purple and it has a great size. I wear my 18.81 Sky star most over the 34 carat because the size really fits everything in everyday life. Yet, it makes a formidable impression.

I hope this helps somewhat and keep us posted!

Thank you so much @Bluegemz for all your valuable and informed advice. When we go back I'll know exactly what to look for in a perfect star!

It seems the best faceted purple sapphires sell for a little less than half the price of blue sapphires, but I found no purple sapphires that come anywhere close to the price heights of the very best blues. Same applies to stars, but there are so few purples it's difficult to draw a firm conclusion.

I think you are exactly right that it comes down to how much you love the stone, and how much your gut says you should be willing to pay. :eek-2: =)2

As promised I wanted to share my star sapphire collection. I’ve loved them ever since my older cousin got engaged with one many years ago.

I have four rings and a loose stone.

The first ring started with a loose stone I bought from a gem dealer at a flea market. He’d travel to India for work, pick up stones while he was there, then sell them at various places.

These are the two I bought from him.
37E3ED6A-A385-478F-A686-5A45492DA89C.jpeg

I set out to find a setting for the bluer one right away. I love the periwinkle color.
I tried out ready made settings, but was worried a cab needed a bezel rather than prongs.
58157D56-C291-46A7-86F8-27DCC4931B04.jpeg

So instead of ready made, a
jewelry friend designed a simple, but strong setting for it and had her bench make it.
It is a sturdy design, not especially refined,
but I still love it.
He used really nice quality stones in the halo so the whole thing really glows in the sun.

This is the loose stone bought from that same vendor.
It’s has a sweet, soft presence. I’d like to design a pendant for it at some point.

The second ring I have, a baby star ruby, also from a flea market was bought as is. I’m not a fan of the setting, but the stone is the sweetest shade of fushia. And it has a double star I noticed just today! I’d love to reset it in a ring so I can enjoy seeing that beautiful gemmy color.

@Bluegemz your star ruby ring is one of my favorites, really beautiful. I watched the design process throughout and loved the final piece!

The third ring I serendipitously found in a crowed, small antique shop tucked away practically out of view. It’s another smallish one at 7cts. It struggles to make a great star I think because of the narrow shape.
Sort of endearing and part of its charm for me.
It’s reaching for the star lol
It has the most delicate light powder blue color with a hint of petal pink. I love the translucence of this one. The setting is a typical mid century style. I’m satisfied to leave it as is and enjoy it that way.

The last ring is a bit of a beast.
It was an impulsive flea market purchase.
I thought I’d unset the stone, scrap the setting and use it in a pendant. For some reason it unsettles me,
I think because it’s highly included and I’m not sure if it’s had any treatment. Also the color reminds me of an internal organ or something.
Maybe in the right context I would love it but I’m not sure. It is a pretty shade of mauve lavender. Have you ever felt that way about a stone? A star or otherwise?

I do love and appreciate the unique beauty of stars!

What a lovely collection and collecting story! I love them, especially the blues and the white and the adorable fuchsia one! I love the way that you set your blue one with the halo and the sturdy band. And, what a great color.
The other blue one which struggles to make a Star is very charming..some stars like this seem almost shy, which I find enchanting. After all, perfection can be boring!
and that fabulous pink star has a great dome!
The white one is soft and poetic...just love it!

re the lavender one, I have felt that way. I have a little star ruby pendant which is included and a mauve red color, which came out from its setting. I haven’t had it fixed because I’m just not sure how to best use it. Some stars are just more rugged and maybe are best looked at, or worn on those occasions where they fit the mood. Still, they are fabulously fascinating and have their own unique beauty.
Thank you for the compliments on my star ruby ring! And thank you for sharing your beauties here:)

Yes! Spouse won't wear rubies for this reason. But she has a pretty little purple star!
