Alex’s biopsy was today. Vet is confident it’s cancer. We’ll have to wait for the results to be 100% sure, but... he’s sure.

Vaccine Associated Fibrosarcoma. They now give certain vaccines with adjuvants known to cause this problem in some cases in specific areas, so they can track which vaccine caused a given incident. Back right hock = rabies shot.

If it’s metastasized, there’s no point in taking the leg, and prognosis is very bad. So him losing his leg - because it hasn’t spread - is our best case scenario. They won’t be able to just excise the tumour because it’s a sort that isn’t clearly demarcated, so they have to take the mass plus a literal pound of flesh in all directions around it. I get it, logically, but I’m having a hard time “hoping” for that.

Vaccines known to cause problems in cats. I’m beyond shocked. How the h*ll can this be happening, after decades of fussing over human vaccines? The silver lining is that Alex got his on his leg rather than between his shoulderblades, as they used to do - you can remove a leg. Not much you can do about neck and back.

He’s so tiny under all that fur. 16lbs.

He’s purring up a storm, eating like a maniac, snuggling desperately, and taking his pain meds like a champ. Doesn’t like the cold compress and hasn’t figured out the cone - he’s limping around backward, which would be completely adorable if it wasn’t completely horrifying.

I am so sorry @yssie and I will be praying it hasn't metastasized and that removing the leg will cure him. I am so so sorry. Sending Alex bucketloads of healing dust and big hugs and sending you lots of good wishes and gentle hugs. Praying for a best case scenario outcome for Alex. He is a very handsome boy.

I am horrified to learn that the rabies vaccine could have caused this. They just made us give rabies vaccines to all of our (indoor) cats because we hadn't done so since we first rescued them. I know it is legally required but there was no risk to our indoor cats whatsoever but this vet insisted and since we had no choice but to bring them for treatments with this vet we complied. I am shocked to read of this possible side effect.

Dear Yssie I am so sorry and hoping the cancer did not metastasize and that Alex ultimately will recover from this and go on to lead a long happy life with you and your dh. {{{Hugs}}}.

Poor little Fred. We’re all rooting for him. He looks like such a sweetheart.

Thank you @distracts. He is a good boy. This morning he isn't moving from the couch and food didn't interest him. I don't know what is going on but I do know the last 2 days have been stressful for him with the bath on Monday and then the lime sulfur dip. But since we aren't treating him with Itrafungol anymore we have no choice but to do the dips/baths. I wish we could just leave him be and if we didn't have 3 other cats we just might and deal with the risk to ourselves but with all 4 we have to treat. I just don't know what to think. He is laying there not moving and it is because we are torturing him with treatments but what choice do we have? Just venting. Oliver is laying beside us purring sweet Patient Zero no clue at the havoc he caused by joining our family.

How is T doing? Give him some purry hugs from me and my furry crew.

Greg’s smile says it all :kiss2:

Yes, thanks Yssie. Right now it is a short lived smile as Fred isn't moving at all this morning but hoping it is just temporary from the trauma he endured over the past 2 days.

Thank you, yes I loved that job but after 4 years I was on the maximum dosage of Ventolin and Becloforte and I still had uncontrollable asthma. I had to make a very difficult choice, to quit my job and find homes for our two cats that we adopted from the animal hospital. It was before we had kids so the cats were our furry kids. It was heartbreaking even though we found great homes for them...we still cried and cried :cry2:. I vowed to never own a pet again...

For 20 years we went without pets until one day my friend told me about the Portuguese Water Dog. Now our house is full, three hypoallergenic dogs and two teen boys. =)2 I still have to use an inhaler on occasion but it’s very manageable. Unfortunately when you develop asthma as an adult it often stays with you for the rest of your life.

I’ve been coming to this thread to check on you, Greg and the cats. I hope Fred is feeling better today.

Aww I am sorry you had to give up a job you loved but glad you have a house full of dogs now (and teen boys) and all is well. We both use inhalers but Greg has more severe allergies than I do at the moment though his immunotherapy has really helped him a lot. He got allergy shots for 20 years (and doesn't go very much anymore knock wood it seems relatively under control) and takes allergy meds and inhalers but is great around animals compared to what he used to endure. He couldn't even stay at my parents house for more than an hour in the early days with their carpets and dogs and cats. But now he is good. I wish there was a treatment that worked better for you but glad you have lots of furry love in your house now.

Thank you for coming here and checking in on us and adding your support and warmth. I appreciate that very much. Your furry babies are gorgeous.

What a sweetie Fred is...all curled up after his bath. <3

Thank you Joanne. Praying he can rally and get through this and be whole again. We love Fred so much and it is breaking our hearts that he is having such a tough time of it right now. Hoping it is just temporary and he can make it through the ordeal. Hope we all can make it through this ordeal.

Thank you so much Joanne. We just tried wiping little Ollie's flakes off his face and he scratched the you know what out of Greg. Little Ollie. Like a wild beast. LOL and oh no poor baby. All the cats are wary of us now.:(2

But I know you are completely right. One day at a time. One hour at a time. One minute at a time.
OK off to start the daily vacuuming, cleaning, disinfecting routine. Exhausting in every way but must be done. Have a good morning sweet @Mamabean and see you later.:wavey:

Both my guys are doing well (for once!). This is T in the front looking like he’s extremely Tired of Life and H in the back looking like he’s way too interested in what T is doing to be innocent. Pretty typical. And somehow the ball from their toy has gone missing and a cat bed from the donation pile got used for once even if the “use” appears to have been just dragging it around. I’m sure both of those things are H’s doing because T would never disturb the status quo like that, lol.

Cat upate:

Fred is eating again (please let that continue) but he isn't moving much and he is basically glued to our love seat where the 3 of us were squeezed in last night. And when I got up this AM he was still there (and all day yesterday too) and he wouldn't get off the couch for breakfast so I brought the breakfast to him. He ate some but not much but at least he did eat something.

Screen Shot 2019-08-22 at 5.36.00 AM.png

I think we are in week 4 of Itrafungol (we give it daily vs pulse dosing and have done so for a few weeks now) and hoping that means they are less contagious. Fred however is only getting lime dips and topical meds so not sure how contagious he is. Oliver has had 5 lime dips and the rest of them 4 and next Tuesday is their next lime dip.

We are seeing regrowth with Oliver at least on his leg (the original spot) but his face is still not good. Right side cheek has some regrowth but his nose is looking not too good. However dead skin there is beginning to flake off.

No regrowth on Fred's legs yet unfortunately but hoping somehow he will get better without the oral antifungals. Fred's face is looking a bit better at least.

Tommy not sure about as his neck hair seems to still be falling out and Bobby seems to have some regrowth of his neck hair though he has a relatively new spot on his back so that is upsetting. All in all we are plugging along doing what we can one day, one hour at a time.

And they are all still losing hair all over the house.

Thanks @Daisys and Diamonds I updated Fred's status above. Lethargic and not moving from our love seat couch but he ate a bit at least yesterday and this AM. I brought the food to him on the couch as he wouldn't move. I shared a photo above of Fred from last night as we were all hanging out on the couch.
Here's another photo from last night.

Screen Shot 2019-08-22 at 6.13.14 AM.png

and one of Oliver from right now. We let him run free in our bedroom in the mornings as it is the only exercise he gets while we are separating him from the other cats for parasite reasons and also to decrease the stress on Fred as he will be more stressed if Oliver is allowed out right now. It sucks for all of us but especially Oliver as he is a kitten and he is basically a prisoner in his playpen most of the day.:( But I see no other choice and we are doing the best we can under challenging circumstances.

Oliver right now.

but he's still a bub - he doesn't know any different - just don't ever let him know about foreign countries were cats have their own doors and go where they please like naughty Master Tibby right now

poor darling Fred, its all so unfare on everyone
at least he will sit with you, he must get comfort from that or he would hide under the bed or still be sitting at the top of your attic stairs
some food is still better than no food

Another update from me.
It's cancer. Sarcoma - just as vet expected. Rabies vaccine is the most likely culprit.
Grade 3 (they grade cancer 1-3, 3 being the worst).
Very aggressive *poorly-differentiated - 50/50 chance it's already spread to the lungs.
Xrays on Tuesday. If it hasn't spread, they'll take the leg that day.
I didn't ask what could be done if it has spread. I know prognosis is poor, I can guess what that means.

I am so sorry. I know how devastating it is to hear that your beloved furbaby has cancer. I will be sending dust your way on Tuesday that it hasn't spread.

Missy,

I know you have researched and researched and consulted and consulted, but is there any chance that shaving your cats would help? It seems that it might reduce the spores that are being shed and/or help reduce your cleaning regime a little bit. I still can't believe that this has happened to you. Poor everyone. I am rooting for Fred. I'm hoping the fact that he is on the couch (even if he is not feeling well) is a sign that he's maybe not quite as unhappy as he was when he was hiding on the stairs. Sending you hugs and strength.

I am so sorry your cat and your family are going through this. I lost my own cat to cancer recently and it happened really fast - she stopped eating normally at the end of May, and she was gone in a month. I hope Alex's cancer hasn't spread and they can stop it with the amputation.

@missy I hope your cats turn a corner soon. They have the best cat parents around and they know they're loved, even if they're fighting the treatments.

I am so sorry @yssie. Praying that Tuesday brings you good news and that the cancer has not spread and that they can remove his leg and the cancer and that Alex goes on to a full recovery. Sending bucketloads of good luck dust for Alex and gentle hugs to you both.

@missy - when was the last time Fred had labwork done?

It has been over 6 months so I know we need to get blood work on all of them probably. Fred is eating well again (knock wood) now that the Itrafungol is out of his system. Bobby's back spot is spreading and Fred's legs have no regrowth so not sure if they are getting worse. Bobby's bald back spot which is spreading is concerning because he has been getting Itrafungol daily for weeks now plus lime dips and topicals and one anti fungal bath to date. Today is anti fungal bath #2.

Thanks @cmd2014 shaving would be traumatic for our kitties and on top of all the other trauma it might set them back even more. Stress is a big issue re their healing and they are super stressed despite Greg and I remaining calm and talking to them in a soothing way and comforting them when administering their meds. Bobby our big cat with a huge appetite won't even come to the kitchen in the AM for breakfast anymore since he knows the Itrafungol is coming right after breakfast. They are smart. So it's been a struggle and a challenge with the meds. Shaving them would be the icing on the cake re their stress level. They hide every morning. My sister said that shaving upsets their homestosasis also but if it were necessary we would take that measure. I just hope that doesn't become necessary. Thanks so much for your good wishes.

@missy I hope your cats turn a corner soon. They have the best cat parents around and they know they're loved, even if they're fighting the treatments.

Thank you @JPie, I appreciate your good wishes and kind comments. I sure hope they know we love them. It has been a torturous 4 weeks plus for them and for us. And before that Francesca's death and then their subsequent URIs and well it has been a pretty lousy summer for all involved. I just want my babies to get better. I thought losing Francesca was the worst nightmare re the cats we could experience but this equals that at least since all of them are doing so poorly mood wise and health wise I just am not sure.

I actually posted here on PS when we first got Alex. I thought I may have. February 2012.
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/we-got-a-kitten.171513/

I rather regret looking at that thread though. Not like I need more to make me cry today.

@yssie {{{Hugs}}}. There are no words. Praying hard for you and for Alex. I am not religious but I am spiritual and believe in the collective power of good wishes and thoughts and we are all wishing a good outcome for sweet Alex. I hope Tuesday brings the best possible news.

Oh my gosh, @missy, you all have been living in a feline-centric version of The Amityville Horror. Hopefully, this is the night that is darkest before the dawn & you all will soon experience medical and emotional daybreak!

Tender thoughts & all best wishes to you and Alex, @yssie, at this sadly challenging time.

Haha thanks for making me chuckle @MollyMalone. Yes indeed it's our own version of The Amityville Horror. :eek2:
Thank you for your good wishes. We are definitely making improvement with the original areas of fungal spots.

Oliver and Bobby's original areas of fungal infection are healing and growing hair. However there are newer areas that seem to not be receding yet and perhaps still losing hair. Tommy seems to be sort of stable though perhaps still losing more hair in the original area. Hard to say on him.

Fred though has widespread hair loss with lots of pink skin showing through and he has regrowth in some areas but in most areas no regrowth. His immune system is weak and he isn't getting the oral meds so we are not sure what the future holds for him. He was eating pretty well the past couple of days but this AM he is refusing food again. We are only treating him with weekly lime dips and now started weekly baths. Yesterday AM was his second weekly anti fungal bath.

We have it down to a routine and are pretty efficient. Get up and feed the kitties. Adminster oral meds. Clean Oliver's playpen while we allow him to run around our bedroom. We have coffee and breakfast and then start cleaning, vacuuming and disinfecting the entire house. It's an exhausting routine but worth it if we can get our cats well. It's a leap of faith because we are fighting an invisible enemy and that makes it challenging in a different way. I wish we could get them well faster but this process is excruciatingly slow.

Tommy and Bobby last night. Huddled together on the couch. They have nowhere to go because we had to get rid of all their cat beds and we had to close their cat room with their human beds upstairs because the room has carpeting. So they have nowhere comfy to lay besides the couch. We put towels down everywhere to soften the surfaces up for them but it's not as good as their cushy beds. Just got impossible to disinfect their beds and they were being torn apart on the hot long cycle in the washing machine so they had to go. Poor sweeties. They have been enduring this for over 4 weeks now.

Fred hanging with Greg last night on the love seat. The 3 of us squish into the love seat every night.

He has widespread hair loss on his chest and tummy, legs/paws and face and neck. There is some improvement on his face we think.

oh poor Bobby
they are smart
too smart for their own good sometimes
i am sure they still love you and Greig, they just probably don't understand why they need all these baths

Thanks Daisy. They are shell shocked I think. In the AM Bobby used to run like a maniac for breakfast and now he just stays in the living room on top of the Grandfather clock and I have to coax him to come into the kitchen to eat. It's disheartening to say the least as he was always the one who ate voraciously and without prompting. He looks at me with his big eyes as if to say mommy why are you doing this to us.:cry2: This is hard on many levels. The cats are being tortured by us and the constant cleaning with vacuuming and mopping is stressing them out. It's noisy and invasive. But we have no choice but to clean every single day like this. Unpleasant and I just want to get everyone through this in one piece and want them to be happy and content and well again.

Cat update:
Elaine came yesterday and helped us bathe them with the anti fungal Miconazole 2% shampoo. They hate it but we got them through it. Hoping we can do this on a weekly basis. This was bath #2. Tuesday is their weekly lime sulfur dip and this will be #5 dip for Bobby, Tommy and Fred and Dip #6 for patient Zero little Oliver. We have been administering the oral anti fungal med Itrafungol on Oliver, Bobby and Tommy for about 4 weeks or a little bit more. I am losing track of time.

oh dear missy don't feel bad about the cat beds
cats love clean washing
and its summer
our Borris has desided to sleep on top of the opened but not unpacked stack of moving boxes that never seem to get taken care of.
i looked inside it and she chooses to snuggle up to triangle shapped shelf brackets so i threw a cat blanket on top
The stray Tibby tom cat has a cosy box with bedding but he prefers to sleep across the top of a little clothes horse i had outside under the eves set up to dry something that needed to dry flat
he's a big boy, he's lucky he hasn't broken it and fell through
they find comfort where they find comfort
Borris will go back to her $100 dollar sctacher barrel bed when it suits her so the kitties won't be missing their beds too much
everyone might feel a bit sad and misserable but you all love each other and love will get you through
fur growing back sounds encouraging
celebrate the small wins and victory will follow
