Greetings everyone!! I've been stalking this site and even though I have learned a few things I still feel clueless!!! perhaps it's just because it's a large purchase and it will be my forever diamond?! anyway, if I could get some input I would be forever grateful! I've got my heart set on a 2 ct. I have not received good service at any local shops but I am very, very, price conscious (I extreme coupon). My to be husband works out of town and we visited a shop that had what seemed like a decent rock
2.01 GiA cert
J SI 1 (could not see inclusions w naked eye)
did have fluorescence, med-high (i forget)
$12900

My question is, does this seem like something acceptable? Although it didn't look yellow I suppose I am still concerned it might look like it outside or in an actual setting. How hard would it be to find a better deal online? Any tips or thoughts for me?

Welcome to Pricescope,

I would recommend you do a side by side comparison with a J colored Diamond and a higher color like a G or H to determine if you are color sensitive. You can usually get a better deal online versus a local B&M store because the overhead costs aren't as high and the savings get passed on to the consumer.

Is that for diamond alone or with setting?

You can use the search bar at the top of the forum to search for options.

Select 'Excellent' on the HCA score section of the Filters/Advanced filters, as that will pull out stones that have the best chance of being cut with pavilion and crown angles that complement each other, and which therefore should perform well.

Without cut info on the stone you saw, it's impossible for us to know if it's a good performer. I saw this stone in person a couple of weeks ago and would have snapped it up if I could have afforded to. It is one color grade lower than a J, but the light return is phenomenal. And Wink at HPD offers top notch service.

I would call Yekutiel at IDJ and tell him your budget and that you want "Pricescope quality" -- they can work wonders within your budget. Also, you don't need a branded super ideal to have an amazing stone. :)

Also trade up policies won't be a concern if this is your "forever" stone.

@iNeedArock, this is another thing to consider. If you think there's a chance you'll want to upgrade in the future, it may be worth it to go with one of Whiteflash's non-branded, but in-house stones for the simple fact that you'd get 100% towards your upgrade. You may have to sacrifice some size/carat weight now, but you can always upgrade in the future. If that doesn't sound like something you'd be interested in, then IDJ would be my first choice for you.

If you really want to restrict it to the top tier of cut specs see https://niceice.com/diamond-buying-secrets/engagement-ring-shopping-30-minutes-or-less/ and other links under Education on the niceice.com page.

You'll find that nobody is giving anything away, especially past the 2ct mark. You might have to give that up and settle for maybe 1.8 or 1.9, just under the magical 2ct. The best cut diamonds, especially the eye clean SI1 and SI2, will be found in the in-house collections of the various Pricescope vendors. I.D. Jewelry has found some nice budget-friendly stones, though. J and K will have quite a bit of tine. The I color diamonds look ivory to me. H would be my cutoff for "white." L and M are, to me, a pleasant pale yellow. That J/K range, to me, is an off-white. Don't set them in any setting with baguettes, unless your jeweler can color-match the baguettes to the tint of a J or K. I have a 8mm RB diamond (1.8ct) that is in the J or K range, set in platinum, with the usual stark white baguettes. I bought it used as a complete ring. But those white baguettes make the center diamond look "stained." lol. That diamond would look much better in another style of setting whose side stones are not as harsh to a warmer diamond. The contrast of colorless baguettes against the pale yellow of L or M is a vintage look that does appeal to me, however. If you are going with warmer diamonds (below I) then you might have to study settings a bit to determine what color of metal and sidestones are most flattering. General rule is not more than 2 grades difference between sidestones and center, but sometimes even that is too much.

Agree with what everyone else said. Without knowing the cut of the stone you were offered we have no idea if it's good or not. Cut is the most important thing when buying a diamond, so use the PS search tool and only consider stones that have HCA of "excellent".

I also agree that if you want size on a budget then contact ID jewelry in NYC.

Sooo a local jeweler is showing me this rock, It’s a consignment piece so it has no certification.

Eye clean 2. 08
G
SI2
8.13 X 8.10 x 5.20
Has one inclusion I can see under the loop. A feather
Very good cut no florescence
11k
My question here is am I missing some information, are there questions I should be asking? The picture attached probably isn’t the best. Does this seem like a good deal or should I continue my search

Why isn't this 2ct stone graded by GIA or AGS?

I would be highly suspicious as to why the jeweler didn't send the diamond off to AGS or GIA for certification (the cost is only a couple hundred dollars) and sell it at a much higher price. So my guess is those specs are a generous estimate by the jeweler, the diamond is treated, lab created, etc. Ask him to send it off to AGS or GIA for certification and if it meets or exceeds those specs and hasn't been treated, isn't lab created, etc. you might be interested (once you review the specs). You could even offer to pay the cost of the certification if you decide to buy. Seems like a win-win. GL

Absolutely do not buy a stone that isn't certified. It is likely poorly cut, or heavily included, or clarity enhanced. Jewelers aren't stupid---if he thought it was actually worth what he's asking (11k), he would have had it certified.

there's a story behind this rock.. it's a weird one. I have been told this stone was found by a couple, they reached out to attempt to find owners came up empty handed and subsequently are trying to sell this stone. I have been told one of them has bad health and they could use the money for treatments and surgery. I previously looked at this same diamond a few weeks ago and they (the couple) were asking a little more. they didnt get it so they picked it up. Not sure if they took it elsewhere or what, as they gave a nonsense story about a relative looking for a stone. since it does not belong to the jeweler I'm guessing that is why there is no cert. I am not sure if the couple has money to pay for a cert since i am sure they would foot the bill? does this all sounds awfully crazy?!?!

It sounds like a diamond you shouldn't buy.

If it doesn't have a lab report (from a reputable lab with consistent grading - ie GIA or AGS), there's no way for you to know exactly what you're getting, and thus no way for you to know if you are paying a fair price. If, however, you just want to feel like you got a deal, regardless of whether you actually did or not, feel free to disregard. But that's how people get ripped off while thinking they got a deal, when they could have just learned a little more and paid a fair price.

It could be that this IS a deal... but there's no way for you to know without a reliable grading report.

It sounds like this is a stolen piece of jewelry. It has all the hallmarks of having an emotional story that tugs at your heart to create sympathy. Do not buy a stone without a report! I also would want to know where the jewel came from.

It sounds like a lie, plain and simple. If the couple were selling it to the jeweler, the jeweler would get a report. If they are trying to sell it to you directly (not going through the jeweler), it's likely stolen or just fake.

DO NOT buy this stone. These people are trying to take advantage of you. If this stone were worth anywhere near what they are asking, they would get it certified and sell it for what it's worth.

Also, if it's consignment (e.g. jeweler selling it for the couple), the jeweler knows it's crap and is trying to get away without certifying it. If it were worth anywhere near that price, he or she would have gotten it certified. Why would anyone not pay the $100-200 to certify a stone??? Bc they know the cert will be awful and show that they are trying to sell garbage.
