Went here to a local Sally Ann today and got a Tahari wool blend blazer sweater, an American Eagle sweat shirt that is clearly new, a funky print viscose summer blouse washed once but the look of it and an as - new London Fog gray wool winter coat. Total = 60 bucks. Sometimes you just luck out, sometimes you don’t.

Great finds!
I'm a dedicated thrift shopper. My big sister introduced me to thrift shops about 10 years ago. There are beautiful things there, if you are patient and look carefully.
Not to mention collectibles, china, art, etc!

Right?

Been shopping Thrift my whole life. Clothes and china predominantly. Some days - nada. Other days - score all sorts of stuff. I was looking for a shorter winter wool coat too and Voila! It’s 300 bucks new and I got it for 40. Doubt it’s been worn more than twice.

What are some of your better finds over the years stracci?

I got a brand new designer dress, with the tags on, for £10, definitely my best buy ever!

Great find Austina!

Yup, just astonished at what you can find. Thrift was the only way to replenish my wardrobe when we were a one income family. Now that there’s two, it’s great to be able to still save money on clothing, china etc. I have to be careful with the china tho, as I’ve over - bought in the past LOL.

My best find for me was an Irish wool sweater (brand new). Bought that 25 years ago, treated it well and still looks new. Sigh. Love Thrift.

I got a $325 Serena & Lily dress at goodwill for 16 bucks. I also got a white Dooney & Bourne satchel for 12 bucks at the same place. On another day, I helped a teenager find a gorgeous $175 dress. Its time to visit more affluent areas next. :twisted2:

My most favorite thrift shop buy was a blue 100% cashmere sweater for 50 cents, that was like 40 years ago, but I must have worn that sweater for a good 10 years before the Moths had their way with it.

I love thrift store shopping albeit generally higher end thrift store shopping. I ended up getting some sweet retro dresses at thrift stores. Unworn with the labels still attached and in pristine condition. Granted the price was not so steeply discounted but they were designer dresses from another era that were untouched and I thought it was a sweet deal for me given I couldn't get these anywhere else. And they cost less than if I had purchased a dress somewhere else new so it was still a bargain IMO. It was a few years ago so I don't remember the exact price but I want to say it was under $150.

I have at least 6 beautiful evening and cocktail dresses from vintage shops.

We always love wandering around thrift stores. The thrill of the hunt and you never know what treasures one will find. I have never found a jewelry bargain at a thrift store though. I think those are very few and far between here as people tend to be more careful with diamonds and such here.

I have seen shoe bargains but in my faith it is bad luck to buy someone else's shoes so I have had to pass on those but @stracci2000 what a deal $7.99 for SW shoes. That is sweet!

And just recently, an oil painting by Henry Lawrence Faulkner, a noted Arkansas painter, paid $5, worth maybe $1000?

Wow, what a find!

I buy most everything at thrift shops with some exceptions (no upholstered furniture or items that cover the lady bits). If the kids need something, that is the first place I try. Most recent example my four year old needed dress shoes and I found a brand new pair of Deer Stags for $8 in the box and everything. I've paid $5 or less for a brand new looking winter coat, gosh I just love the deals.

I agree, Steph!
I was raised wearing my older sister's hand-me-downs.
So I really don't need "brand new". Many things at the thrift stores still have tags on them anyway.
In fact, I kinda feel happy about rescuing lovely items, and I really savor finding expensive items for a few dollars.
And the thrift stores I go to are all charities, so I feel good about spending my money there. A new one I've been frequenting supports a safe house for victims of domestic violence.

@stracci2000 you know even better than saving money, people who shop secondhand are really helping the planet as well. What is the alternative? Perfectly good items going to landfills, so really it's a win all around.

We are lucky that we have two boys because although they are seven years apart, I saved all the clothes and shoes that were decent as well as all the baby stuff so we could use it with our second. Our youngest is literally today wearing shoes that my oldest wore seven years ago and you would never know they weren't new. I swear this is the only way we can live in such an expensive state on one salary.

great finds ladies
i have no idea what im doing !

but i did want to tie dye a denham jacket once but didn't want to risk a new one so i went down to the local church charity store and made a little bit of the '80s for only a few dollars
then
when we got our first cat i thought the plastic cat bowls were gross so i popped down to the salvation army to buy some nice china saucers and soup.bowls from the miss-matched 50c pile
i think our cat appreated the effort and they were much nicer to wash

....i need to go shopping with you fine laddies

Fun! First time was here, when one such hole in the wall of a shop caught my eye with a YSL jacket. A couple of such bargains got me taking for a ride things I would hardly buy otherwise, eg. 5in stilettos - survived, except downhill... I haven't passed by this year yet.

Great finds everyone!

Just picked up a gray Ralph Lauren wool sweater for 6 dollars. Always on the hunt for merino or cashmere as they are either not available locally or too expensive.

All my mugs are from thrift. Someone are undoubtedly unused. 1 dollar for a mug that retails at 40? I’m in!

Local Salvation Army 50% off sale today that I stumbled upon.
A brand new grey wool Mexx pea-jacket was 12 dollars and a very nice stretchy jean skirt (Italian) was 3 dollars.
Nice scoop.

Thrifting is awesome although I’m on a shopping moratorium at the moment!

When the shops near me are advertising a big sale, I go the evening before (never on the sale day!) because by then they’re usually delivering good stuff to the shelves to stock up for the sale crowd. First, I get a trolley and check the Art section... if there’s anything great, grab it quick! I decide against it, I can always put it back! (I once reached for a painting the same time as another shopper but he paused to look at it for a moment too long and my hand got there first. Sorry not sorry. That remains my favorite watercolor ever.)

Then, ironstone, scanned from ten feet away I’ll know if there’s anything to grab. Sometimes there are antique feedsack quilts for $2 so they Leap into the cart. And then knitwear (cashmere with holes or stains makes great nesting for the cat baskets; my cats are ragdolls so they gravitate to fluff that reminds them of their cat mum and it’s so sweet to see them kneading it). And then books! That’s the best part.... I once bought over a hundred books some library had donated. They were $1 each, on art, British lit, architecture, and so forth. I’ll never finish reading them all, but it felt like bringing home a car full of friends <3

I never look at the jewellery cases. That’s for the seasoned professional thrifters!

Got 2 wool coats that appear unworn. Both wool and lined (one a Mexx and one a London Fog). Paid 20 dollars each.
Score!

2 lovely new stoneware mugs and some soup mugs (use the white ones as plant pots for succulents), 1 dollar each.

Also a light blue cashmere sweater, 6 dollars.

❤️ thrift shopping!

There are a lot of good clothes in a thrift shop you just need to check on those racks. I got a couple of branded dresses and bags before.

I wish I could go thrift shopping and find cool items in the future because I always see people finding nice clothing with them being in good shape
