Hi everyone. I had posted over in ‘Rocky Talky’ as I am looking for an engagement ring, however now I’m considering lab grown I thought I should post here.

My story! So, my partner and I have just found out we're expecting our first baby :shhh::cry2:. I'm 35, and thought I would have fertility problems so it has been very exciting, overwhelming and unexpected!!

We'd talked about getting engaged 'one day' and now he wants to move that along that we will be having a baby coming. However he knows nothing about rings, knows that I know what I want, and is happy to leave it up to me.

I now feel guilty about what my original budget was, with this baby on the way. So I think to be sensible I really have to revise it (or at least, lower the expectations and qualities of the diamond that I had in mind). I'm also in Australia, and our dollar is crap at the moment. My budget is no more than $5-6KAUD (about $3-4K USD).

This has led me to look at potentially getting lab grown. I’ve purchased from Vrai and Oro before and love their dainty pieces.

I’ve found this ring which I love:https://www.vraiandoro.com/engagement-rings/the-solitaire-pave?gold=yellow-gold
I would customise the head to be white gold, with 6 prongs.
I like this diamond to go with it: https://certificate.diamondfoundry.com/download/201865.pdf which is $2349.

Thoughts?

The proportions are beautiful! I would want to know more about the clarity though ... at vs2 do you know what the inclusions are - can you get an inclusion plot?

The other thing is the price. With Lightbox going to $800 per carat, I wonder if the price will not come down some. At the same time, that cut may be worth the premium.

So ...I guess my main concern is whether it is eye clean and/or cloudy.

Otherwise, I think lab grown is a fantastic option!

I love the setting too ... you go girl!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!!! Wishing you all the best in this exciting time for you!

I ended up finding this on the Diamond Foundry website (where Vrai and Oro source their diamonds from). It has the exact same characteristics to the stone I linked so I’m wondering if this is it.

I think clarity is still a concern - crystal and cloud under the table - even it’s not 100% eye-clean it’s going to be a very beautiful performer because of that cut. It would be good if you can get someone to look at it for you or you could see it before getting it mounted ... up to you if eye-clean is important... worst case is clouds could make t look, well, cloudy, and that would be bad .. really guessing ... no way to know without seeing it ...
just my 2 cents

Thanks Kmoro, much appreciated.

I've been in contact back with the vendor, and the diamond has been confirmed as 'eye-clean'. Attached is a photo of the stone: (she apologised to me for the bad lighting).

I think that stone is a winner and I bet you’d be happy with it! If you’re not then ... I guess I can try to pretend I didn’t say anything, but ... if I was in the market for LG at that size ... I can’t see anything wrong with it :appl:

Honestly, I would still rather see you go with natural and have a trade up policy ... but in the long run, the amount you spend on this stone is not much to lose.

It is a beautiful option in the now at a nice price! If I were you, I would have a really hard time deciding what to do. (I would be tempted to go smaller with trade up policy - .6 is quite a lovely starter size lol ...)

Have you decided what to do yet?

No, I have no idea!! I've gone directly through the Diamond Foundry website (they now seem to own Vrai and Oro I think, so the settings are the same), and by signing up to them I've received a $300 voucher. This equates to 10%off almost, which basically covers the cost of my import GST. It's really hard to go past. I absolutely love this setting and the simplicity of it, and I love the large sparkly stone.

I don't ever plan on selling it, so the 'value' of a natural mined diamond over a lab-grown/man-made diamond doesn't really bother me too much. I don't think.

Argh so hard to know what to do!! Especially as I've essentially found my dream ring at my price point. A small part of would prefer to be a natural mined diamond...
My partner likes the fact I've picked a lab-grown one though.

HELP!! :)

I know what @sledge wants me to do though!

You snooze, you lose, in the diamond world! (And especially on Pricescope, where lurkers lie! lol)

Don't worry, though, there are always more stones coming through :)

Make sure to place a stone you are interested in on Hold before posting it here, as that should give you some time to ask for opinions in safety!

Oh no now the lab diamond sold! But... the diamond gods have a way of making these things for the best. This will force you to think about it a little longer ...

I think that it’s a significant purchase even at the price savings of LG. If there’s any part of you that prefers natural, maybe you should go with that. Sledge isn’t alone in his opinion, but it’s hard for natural diamond fans to get on board with LG. It takes me a bit of effort to support LG purchase just because of the money value ... if only you weren’t in a (happy!) time crunch you could wait for prices to drop.

Another thought - if you’re considering LG diamond, have you considered moissanite? I bought a necklace with four stones and I’m very impressed. You can find some absolutely stunning pieces and could afford a larger stone. Many rings have natural diamond halos etc. It’s a beautiful stone type’thst really does give diamond a run for the money.
