Hi folks, everyone has been extremely helpful in rocky talky. I went crazy over basic 4Cs, super ideal cut stones, how to screen for optimal pav/table/crown etc. but now time for the setting...

I like the look of this https://www.instagram.com/p/Bas4Pj3He6K/
and want to have it set with this stone https://segoma.com/v.aspx?type=view&id=KC84H76PUX

I wonder about unique concerns related to a 3-sided pave setting. IDJ assures top quality and haven't had issues with other customers but thought I'd see if anyone here has firsthand experience. Any stories good/bad after 1+ years of wear? Any photos on hand of similar styles would be amazing too!

Just consider the wedding band that she will wear with the 3-sided pave ER. Perhaps, consider a spacer to help prevent wear, rubbing, and damage?

Here is mine. In 2014 made by Victor Canera and still in excellent condition. I do not wear mine as an everyday ring though. I do sometimes wear it with a band. Mine is ‘bright cut set’: the tiny ‘rims’ that frame the diamonds. This is a different way of setting compared to the inspiration setting you posted.

I love that these setting show some additional viewing pleasure when you see them on profile.

Please note that a ring with all over diamonds can damage a wedding band. And it could be a bit more vulnerable when worn every day.
Also, stones can come out or damage if you are hard on your hand (for example during work-out, on the edge of a pool, gardening etc.). So it would be a ring to take off during those activities.

You're removing structure from a shank to house all those tiny little stones, and all those tiny little stones are held by tiny little prongs that are all subject to the same wear and tear as larger prongs.

3-sided pave from anyone = recipe for lost stones and deformed shanks, with regular use over time. It isn't a possibility - it's an absolute guarantee.

3-sided pave from a shop that does not specialize in pave, like IDJ = recipe for lost stones and deformed shanks, with regular use over a shorter amount of time. Again, it isn't a possibility, it's an absolute guarantee.

I am a absoute sucker for three sided pave. I got my ring in 2010 for my 30th anniversary. It is the style of ring that makes my heart stop every time I see one. After all these years, Leon is still the person I would go to for this style of ring. I know, I know, he has somewhat fallen out of favor here of PS for some of the things he has done, and I understand that, but his pave to me is some of the finest.
I have had a couple issues with my ring. The top edges of migraine are bent a bit and the ring is a little bit out of round. However, I wear it almost every day, have ultra sound cleaned it and up to this point have not lost a single stone. I don't wear it to do rough work, but I also don't baby it a lot. I was almost 50 when I received it so I intend to wear it until I can't wear it anymore. I believe it can be repaired, but I haven't wanted to send it to Leon. I keep thinking DH and I will take a quick trip to NY and I will drop it off for repairs.

Thank you, @Acinom for your sweet words about my ring. Your collection includes some of my very favorite PS rings as will. That face up shot looks really dirty. I think my son took that for me with his camera. I will try to get a few shots of the ring now, but it will be with my cell.

I would highly recommend Leon Mege if this is the kind of ring you want. Victor Canera would be a close second, buy IDJ wouldn't even be on the list. It is not that they don't make a great product, they do. But this kind of pave needs someone who specializes in it, and that is Leon's forte. Stephen Kirsch
(sp?), would be a person I would trust since he was trained at Leon's bench.
It is not a ring that you could wear for a lifetime without some damage. It's just not. There is some three sided pave that is much thicker that you could. I will try to get you a picture of that type. It is not what Leon, or Victor do for the look I think you are loving. So if you are a young bride, bear that in mind. By the time I got my ring my kids were grown so I knew I would be able to worry less about it.
If you are starting out in marriage and planning a family, I would look for a sturdier ring with a stone you love and upgrade the setting at some time later, but that is just my opinion based on how my ring has held up. Good luck!

I love the 3 sided pave! I think that as the wearer, it is how you see your ring a good bit of the time (in profile) and most people probably do not even know that it is there. I do not wear this ring everyday and opted for a split shank as opposed to wearing a wedding band with it so damage to the side stones is not as big of a concern for me.

Best of luck on your upcoming project, be sure to come back and share pics.

You can see the bent migraine on both sides and the slightly out of round of my ring. Sorry for my super dry hand, lordy that looks bad in big pics, lol. It's cold and dry here in CA

Here is a Martin Flyer three sided pave ring I own. I wear it about as much as my white diamond ring and it has not sustained any damage at all. It is a wider shank a you can see in the photos, not nearly as delicate in pave or prong work but it has held up much better. You can have a ring made with this kind of width and expect it to hold up as well. It is not my favored style of pave but it is a much sturdier ring.

Hope this helps.

One thing to note- I do wear a spacer, but I also wear a eternity band with .14 stones. I am sure that has contributed to the damage-even worn with a spacer, but that is the look I wanted. Wearing a ring alone protects you from some damage but it could still happen.

@Acinom or anybody who knows the answer to this question - who owns the gorgeous leon 3 sided halo square cut diamond ring that Acinom posted? I'd love to read a little more about it; it's one of my all time favorite rings on PS.

I think it’s from Lovey. Will try to find it for you. Her ring is gorgeous indeed!

Reena was a young mom, and her ring was irreparably damaged. She opted for a new ring without pave. I think it took about 6 years before she couldn’t wear it anymore.

Oww, so sorry to hear this. Thanks for posting.
I used to be hard for my hand and broke probably all gypsy set diamonds in my wedding band. Currently I am somehow much less hard on my hands. Love your advice to opt for a ring like this when you grow a bit older...

She posted a while back under a new name because she couldn't remember her sign in info. The original Heidy was my all time favorite and I had a tough time not getting the halo version of my ring. It just couldn't stand up to life with kids. In her daytime job, she is a lawyer, but I think it was the stuff she did for/with her kids that took the toll on her ring. It is surprising how little it really takes to damage these rings. They are beautiful but delicate.

Here's my 3-sided pave. I love it, I've only had it for 1 year, but so far, so good. I do note that my ring style is not as delicate as some of the others pictured here.

Your ring should hold up just fine,@Eli22. It is a bit thicker. The perfect kind of pave that will last a lifetime. Exactly the kind of was referencing. Thank you for posting your pics so those interested can see the difference.

I actually love a ring that is a bit wider. For the look of my ring, Leon wouldn’t go any wider. I don’t often wear it by itself because it doesn’t feel like ‘enough’ on my finger after years of wearing a more substantial setting. My daughter wears a slightly wider e-ring with stones down the band by itself and I think it looks beautiful on her.

Amazing rings, folks. Thanks for all the wonderful responses. I ultimately went with a plain-shanked 3-stone setting from CvB

I don’t have any 3 sided pave myself but here’s one I like. It’s by Hatton Garden Bespoke Diamond Jewellery Workshop (HG Bespoke) in London, UK.
I think ( personal opinion) that these three sided pave styles are gaining popularity here in the UK, previously lots of designs here were less ornate.
