hello everyone.
So I found a setting on IG that I love but I am having some changes made to it.
The original setting was an antique and held a 9.5 mm moissanite.
Here is the original-

I like the overall design of the ring. The changes I want are-
1- 8 prongs but I’m not sure if it looks right because the 12 and 6 o clock prongs just kind of stick out. With 6 prongs they line up perfectly with the ends of the petals.
2- triwire band
3- a more flowing gallery design. I feel like the gallery pieces look seperated.
Here are the CADs he has made already.

So we are currently at the #3 CAD.
So my questions are -
Should I keep it 8 or 6 prongs?
Is it too high? I think I made the height too high. What would be a good height without the diamond poking me. The diamond is 5.77 mm. I had a ring that used to poke me and it annoyed the crap out of me. I don’t want a donut or anything obstructing the bottom though bc I want to clean it easily.
Should I make the gallery design rose gold or make everything platinum?
Should I add a diamond to the little hole in the gallery or leave it be?

I have a couple of questions about the leaves, are you getting rose cuts for that area (as the original appear to be rose cuts) or are you doing modern round melee? If you are doing modern have you considered marquise for the leaves? I think that would be a perfect fit.

1- 6 prong
2- triwire band, yes! give a nice vintage feel that aligns with the original setting
3- I like the 3rd look of a two tone, you could even have the triwire as two tone which will help blend or keep it a solid metal. OR you could have it miligrained like the leaves are

This is so exciting @kayla17! This is going to be gorgeous! I personally like the 6 prong vs 8. Many antique settings did place the diamond lower. I also had a previous setting where the culet sat on top of my finger, hated that! :confused2: #3 doesn’t look too high to me. I love the idea of two tone. I don’t think I’d add a diamond to the gallery hole. I can’t wait to see this finished!

Another vote for six prongs as it seems to flow better. I do like how lower set the first CAD is, but that also comes down to your personal preference.

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Thanks! I’m going with brilliant cut diamonds. I’m not sure what the original has tbh. My diamond is a round brilliant so I wanted the diamonds to match.
I love the milgrain on the gallery. I was going to ask him to also add that later.
My current setting by DK is two toned in Rose gold and platinum with a tri wire band. Would you do the middle wire rose gold or platinum.

I know! I’m so excited. I love the original so I don’t want to change too much from the top. I don’t know the height of the original though. My current setting is 7.1 mm but it has a donut and number 3 is 7.2 mm. I’m thinking at least 1mm should be enough clearance. So maybe 7 mm tops? I hate that pokey feeling and I also am afraid to damage the culet.

Thanks! It seems the 6 prongs is winning.

Another question I have is what shape should the prongs be? Rounded? Soft claws? Should I do Dahlia type prongs with milgrain? Wide tab prongs? Tiffany tab prongs?
If I’m going with 6 prongs I really want the diamond secure as possible. My diamond is insured but I love it and wouldn’t want to lose it or damage it.
Any ideas would be help!

In general, I would vote for 6 prongs, I think I like the fluidity better, however, for diamond protection purposes, I am voting 8 prongs. I think the 6 leave the diamond a bit too exposed and I would be afraid of possible damage. That could be just me though since I have seen multiple chipped stones in my days.

I think six prongs is plenty secure. I agree that in the cad the extra two sort of seem out of place, but it’s also possible that IRL they could be totally unobtrusive. If in doubt, I think six is the winner.

I think I probably prefer all platinum, but that’s up to your preference.

It doesn’t seem overly high to me given your stone depth, but I would just ask him to set it as low as possible. That is the one thing I don’t love about the ring he made for me- it is a smidge high, but it’s not a deal breaker. I’d just ask what the lowest he recommends is.

Congrats- this will be beautiful! I really love the inspiration setting.

8 prongs. But fine tab ones. The 12 and 6 o'clock won't stick out so much.

I like the idea of two tone triwire and gallery but I dont think you can go wrong with either choice.

I’m no good at CADs but can’t wait to see it. The inspiration pics look awesome.
Me neither so that’s why I want to get this right. I don’t even normally ask for design advice but I know I will get great feedback from everyone here.

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had chipped stones! That why I’m thinking the 8 prongs would be better. If I go with 8 prongs what shape should I get? I can probably ask David to shape the prongs flat from the sides and then what ever I want from the top. We should have a prong shape thread so everyone can get ideas.

I like the 6 prong CAD. Maybe as was suggested, 8 tab prongs would look better, but the 8 prong CAD makes the top and bottom look "prongy", but of course, these are CADs and the prongs will be less obtrusive. I like the CAD where the stone is set lower as well. Can you just ask them to make it a bit taller than the depth of the stone?

Thank you! I already have a bunch of solitaires so I really wanted something different with this setting. I will ask David what he recommends as far as the height.

Thanks! I’ll have to research fine tab prongs. Do mean flat from the side or do you mean just narrow prongs.

What a beautiful setting! I can't wait to see how this turns out. :)

1) Prongs. I agree that 6 prongs is a safe bet, but I actually like the idea of 8 prongs, especially in an antique-style setting. I see what you mean about the the top and bottom prongs maybe sticking out, but that may not be as pronounced in person. An idea to reduce this would be to rotate the prongs 22.5 degrees. This way instead of having prongs at 12' and 6', your prongs will split the middle -- at 11' and 1' and 5' and 7'. The side prongs would similarly straddle the horizontal line detail between the petals (2' and 4', 8' and 10'). Approximately (since there aren't 16 hours on a clock  ).

2) The style of prong will probably depend on how many. I wouldn't do 8 claw prongs, as claw prong are more of a "statement", but I think they would look nice with 6. I am not sure exactly what "fine tab" prongs, but I like the concept :)

3) I personally would go all platinum, since there is so much other detail on the ring. But up to you!

4) I like either option with stones or no stones in the galley. No stones might keep it lighter looking, since the top view is heavier (but gorgeous!)

I can't speak to specific heights, but I echo everyone else! Low is good, but pokey is bad! Can you maybe just tell that to DK? haha

Thanks. I agree about the prongs look. I feel like a solitaire would be great for 8 prongs but this particular setting it doesn’t seem to fit. I’m just concerned that the edges are not covered.
The stone depth is 5.77. I asked DK what he thought. I think these type of settings it looks better with a lower set stone too. Like they looks better squatty.

I didn’t think about positioning the prongs that way but I like the idea. I drew a crude picture of what I think you are talking about. The only thing is I do want prongs at the 9 and 3 bc I like they way they line up with the milgrained line. Also where would the leaves fall. I kind of like that they are perfectly aligned with the prongs. Is this what you mean?

I did ask DK what he thought about the height so I’m just waiting on his response. I will defer to him on that. I actually want this setting more squatty and spread out.

.

Heh. Flattered that you drew that out! An yup! That's exactly it, except more evenly dispersed, since you don't need a "phantom" prong space at 12, 3, 6, and 9 ;P So same spacing as a traditional 8-prong, but slightly rotated.

The petal position is an issue though. They probably wouldn't line up :( I feel like the points of the petals would end up falling between two prongs.

Here are pictures of the setting on an IGer’s hand. She had it made after the original too with a OEC. She did six prongs but I think in the pictures the diamond wasn’t set yet so it appears high.
And she’s wearing a beautiful french cut band with it as well. I do think this type of setting I could get away with not wearing a band at all. Which my right hand will appreciate since I have a lot of stackers.

That still might work though. Especially since it will be evenly placed. It will look like the prongs where placed so each petal fell in the middle on purpose.
I wish I was good at photoshopping! Lol!

IDK kayla. I LOVE this setting and if I were having it made I would want to keep it as close to the original as possible. That goes for the prongs too.
Adding additional prongs imo will throw the design off.
