Are we ready for some holiday music? I mean, Hallmark movies started on 10/26, so . . .

This was on our FB feed the other day and it is absolutely sublime. One of my favorite pieces of music, Gregorio Allegri's Miserere mei, Deus.

That was a truly glorious piece with which to start, Holly! I am so glad you started the thread so that we can enjoy it all through Advent!

My three favorite holiday songs.

Natalie Hemby “The Perfect Gift”

“River” by Joni Mitchell

Also love the version by Sarah McLaughlin

And Ave Maria

I enjoy many different versions of this gorgeous piece.

I learned of "Perfect Gift" here on Pricescope years ago. I am someone who still likes to "own" a piece of music on a CD or vinyl. It was terribly hard to obtain this song that way, but I managed. I really love it, too. It is one of the rare "popular songs" for Christmas (as opposed to traditional carols) I really like a lot. Thanks for putting it into the thread this year, missy.

Thank you @AGBF... Haha yes because I share it here every year  I hope that is OK but these are my favorite songs and they are worth re-sharing I think. The "Perfect Gift" is not well known at all and is still not on any of our music stations like Pandora or Tidal. We have a mixed CD with the song given to us by our friend who compiles alternative holiday music and that is where we first learned of this song many years ago. I am glad it is on youtube still so I can share here every year with you lovely people.

Sending you healing hugs and good thoughts for your upcoming surgery. (((Hugs))).

The day after tomorrow, December 2, is the beginning of Advent. As I was waiting for my daughter in the dentist's office today I picked up a local newspaper which had a lot of information on local carol singing and church services for the Christmas holidays. It also had some informative articles about Advent and its meaning to Christians. Today I visited this site to find a carol specifically for Advent, the period in which Christians await the birth of Jesus, which of course already happened. One minister wrote that Christians are now symbolically awaiting Christ's return.

This is a site where one can find carols especially meant for Advent...https://focusoncampus.org/content/10-advent-songs-to-remind-you-its-not-yet-christmas

I loved this carol which I found on the page of Advent songs. I do not believe it has been posted on Pricescope before.

Here is another carol especially for Advent. When I was doing my reading in the dentist's office I learned what some of you who were brought up as more religious Christians than I was probably already knew: that it was traditional even in the recent past to fast to during Advent in most Christian churches and it still is in some as the faithful await the great feast celebrating the birth of The Messiah. People fasted rather than frantically shopped for Christmas as they awaited the holiday. :))

I was raised as a Unitarian, believing in the fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of man, and the neighborhood of Boston. We had a Sunday School class called The Church Across The Street in which we visited the places of worship of other faiths. I tend to know a little bit about a lot of different religions but not enough about most of them to be "literate". How different churches observe Advent is a bit beyond my level of competence, but I am interested in hearing about everyone's customs.

We usually call this thread our Christmas and Holiday Music thread. There are not a great many songs for Chanukah, but there are some. (Chanukah is not as important a holiday in the Jewish religion as Christmas is in the Christian religion.) This is one of my favorites, however. It has been in other Pricescope threads. Chanukah begins tonight, December 2, at sundown. The first candle on the menorah is, therefore, lit tonight.

This song is very lighthearted. It is "Candlelight" by the Maccabeats.

Adding an interesting link.

https://www.timeout.com/newyork/music/best-hanukkah-songs

The truth is that many of the best Christmas songs originate with Jewish songwriters: take “Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree,” “Winter Wonderland,” “You're A Mean One Mr.Grinch,” “White Christmas”… So when you consider the great number of Christmas albums by artists ranging from Barry Manilow to Bob Dylan to Kenny G, it's not that strange that gentiles crafted some of the best Hanukkah songs: one of our favorites, for instance, is Sharon Jones’s funky Hanukkah bop "8 Days of Hannukah."

"The Cherry Tree Carol" by Inner Voices

The addition of the male voice singing Joseph's thoughts in this arrangement makes it very different and, in my opinion, moving.

One of my favorite Bach pieces; I walked down the aisle to this as played by a classical guitarist.

What a beautifully haunting rendition. It's very moving.

This was played at my wedding, too. But by the organist and as a prelude to the wedding while guests were being seated in the church. One of my all time favorites, also. :))

Not strictly a holiday tune, yet it captures the spirit of the season beautifully:

I’ll be listening to the rest of your holiday offerings as I work on my Christmas projects (sewing) today. Looking forward to discovering new favorites, and maybe even a few numbers that truly move me!

I went to see if there were other versions of this song available. I found that The Wailin' Jennies, a Canadian trio, have been singing it for a long time. They do have a studio recording available, but I liked seeing them sing, so I enjoyed this version more.

Another one of my top faves as far as songs go, and she has such a lovely clear voice. In The Bleak Midwinter.
