Hi Folks

Here is a thread of regrets! What did you pass up on that you wish you had bought?

I'm not talking about say "Oh I wish I bought bright pink spinels 10 years ago" (don't we all) but more like specific items you passed up on and now regret it.

For me it was a pair of set zircon earrings from Mastercut! They were on sale and set and lovely and large. I was going through my "I'm funny about blue" phase (still am but I like the zircon kind of blue). Totally regret it now considering how lazy I am when it comes to setting/designing things! Should have bought those!

A beautiful, large and brilliant pear shaped, true mandarine garnet from my jeweler 7 years ago. It was perfect . I thought it was a tad expensive so I passed. I’d be lucky to see one like that again at that price. I seriously regret it!

Another...a hand drilled, tiny Akoya Keshia pearl necklace which cascaded down and was super thick and shaggy. It had so many pearls and the labor was extensive. Never have seen anything like that again and it was just so cool.

Quite a few, but what weighs on my mind the most is a fantastic blue-green sapphire that I was sure was going to go on sale very shortly. The vendor had scheduled sale events and I knew the sapphire was likely to be included in the next one, so I was waiting on that. It sold three days before the sale began and I'e never seen a sapphire in quite that shade with so perfect a cut since.

Only one. A lovely yellow gold ring with small emeralds on Ebay. It was a very special ring, quite substantial (I think it was 14 grams of 18k yellow gold) with excellent details and workmanship. I let it get away and years later I still think about that ring.

A LeVian yellow sapphire sunflower ring that was huge and unique. It was around $1k on Ebay, and I was afraid it was overpriced given LeVian typically uses treated/heated sapphires, but I've not seen another one since.

A gorgeous alexandrite from my local jewelry. It was pricey but the colors were crisp with very little bleeding.

Mine is a little silly but it came to mind immediately when I saw this thread. We went to Miami on vacation when I was a kid and it was a REALLY big deal since we weren't that well off. We walked through some kind of an open market(? my memory is a little bit fuzzy since this was over twenty years ago) and someone was selling THE MOST gorgeous pair of (I presume) emerald earrings ever. I remember they were this incredible deep green and somewhat rectangular in shape and on leverbacks. I remember staring at them forever until my parents dragged me away (I didn't ask - obviously a kid had no use for those, and it wasn't like we could afford them anyway...)

I'm sure these days I would be all ack! inclusions! gasp! treatments! where's the certificate?? - but that memory has stuck with me forever. I've looked for a similar version but never found one that quite lives up to the impression in my mind, which I'm sure I've built up to some unrealistic mythical thing...

A few years ago I told this story to my dad and he felt horribly guilty that he didn't buy them for me then, which I told him was silly - what would I have done with them - worn them to the school play?? (well I probably would have tried!) Anyway, it's a fun little memory, and I've loved, loved, loved jewelry and colored gemstones ever since.

I have my eye on a certain sapphire ring on ebay right this minute that I know I will just cry when someone nabs it. I just can't pull the trigger right now due to the recent acquisition of the platinum bracelet and blue spinel ring I've bought this month! I'm really trying to figure out how to come up with a way to get it, short of mortgaging the next few birthdays and Christmases with the hubby. Pretty sure it will be my "the one that got away".sad :((

An elongated cushion mint peridot, still think about it sometimes :roll2: Would have made a nice East-West pendant.

@marionberry

I believe that you wouldn't, but wonder about the lurkers:think::silenced:
It's large (more than 4 carats), unheated, and more of a spearmint color. May not be everyone's cup of tea but I own a very blue spinel, so this shade of sapphire appeals to me more. It's in the "wrong" metal for me, but I love it enough not to care! Honestly considering selling one of my project cars to fund it. (Hubby and I also collect vintage VWs.)

I was going to make a post with the same exact question. You beat me to it!

I have a few. This pad sapphire from NSC. It was $21,000 iirc. Maybe not the best pad but I like its color.

Jadeite donut earrings. They were a light green color with some whispy lavender mixed in. So pretty and I haven't stopped thinking about it all these years. It was from jade sellers in a temporary kiosk and I went there almost every day to look at it until it was sold. It only cost maybe $20 or so but I was being a cheap ass and didn't think I'd ever wear it (I was a tomboy and dressed in men's clothes). My biggest non-purchase regret.

This one from gemfix. Found it too late.

Ah yes, there are dozens that got away.
Sigh.
I’m regretting most, currently, a huge sapphire and diamond “ring dant” ie a ring that can convert to a pendant.
The sapphire was pretty rubbish but the diamond mount was absolutely spectacular and would have suited RubyRuby perfectly.
I should have bid higher.

I've got a ring I'm obsessed with right now. .. But feel guilty even considering it with what I've spent this year already. .. But I know it's one I will deeply regret not buying. ... and the layaway terms are great. .
How to get past the guilt and just commit?

You only live once and if you're reasonably financially secure just go for it!

I work on the basis of cost per year as well! So say I buy a $10,000 ring. Over 10 years thats only $1000 a year to wear it. Imagine how much enjoyment I have had over 10 years. As the years go buy the ring just gets cheaper and cheaper!

Same applies to the rings I buy which fall into the Less than $1250 thread but these are even better!

$1250 over ten years is only $125 a year! That's peanuts and you can save that by grocery shopping wisely =P

Feeling the same way about a 4 ct diamond. I know I’m going to feel devastated when it sells and it’s even been putting me off slightly more expensive CS as mentally I keep thinking... “how about if I put the money to the diamond instead?”...

If you KNOW you'll deeply regret it, I'd say go for it! The ones I regret not buying are the ones I KNEW FOR SURE I'd still pine for, and I sure still do! Those jade earrings dammit!!! I think about it often.

Are you a diamond girl or a CS girl?

I have one modest diamond ring (love the actual diamond itself) but I hardly ever wear it cuz I am just more into bright colourful things.

But if you're not the type to wear say like a BRIGHT green stoned ring etc, a 4ct diamond might just be for you!

hehe or you want a rainbow of rings too?

Definitely a diamond girl, but I like some colors too. Can’t say I definitely want a rainbow but I do love my paraiba pendant and definitely want earrings and ring to match for example.

I’m also a pearl girl... so maybe I’m really just a magpie and love bling in general?

But yeah, I can definitely rock a 4 carat diamond.

I just caved in for a diamond ring :P2 I’ve a soft spot for a true antique OMC, quirks and all. That’s my excuse and I’m standing by it.

A pariba, a royal purple ammy, a huge cornflower blue sapphire and a 2 carat ruby. I wish I had bought a second ruby cut from the same rough-same size and cut to match the one I bought to make a bypass ring.

CS for me, all the way! I sold both of the OEC rings I owned because I didn't wear them enough to warrant keeping them. I have a modest pair of diamond post earrings and a small diamond eternity ring I picked up preloved on LT for $110, but that's about it other than melee in a few CS rings.

CS for me too! I like to wear different colors depending on how I feel and to match my jewel toned clothes and to complement my black clothes. I'm one of those people who feels bland without wearing a "pop" of color somewhere, and the color may as well be on my fingers!

So if you ask me whether I'd prefer 1 diamond or 2-5 CS rings, it's a no-brainer for me, as I like variety. There is no way I'd want to wear a colorless diamond in my e-ring rather than my ruby. My heart just doesn't swoon for colorless bling the way it does for a vibrant red or green or blue.

Last week I was looking at star sapphires on ebay. I found a sz 7 lilac star sapphire cabochon set in platinum with 6 Asscher cut diamonds. It was an auction. The ending price was $810.00. :wall:

I regret not purchasing the zircon earrings from Mastercut too @mellowyellowgirl . At one point Rachelle had mentioned they would be adding peridot earrings to their inventory, but I haven't seen them yet. Maybe we need to send a shout out to @mastercutgems to let them know we want to see more earrings .
My biggest CS regret I missed out on I actually did purchase, but then returned. It was a blue green tourmaline from Barry B and he said it was a special color that reminded him of a Paraiba. I was new to collecting and didn't even know what a Paraiba was, lol. When I received it, I thought it was pretty , but it was $400+ and not exactly what I was looking for at the time. At the time I was looking for more of a evergreen colored tourmaline, so I sent it back :wall:. Now that I know how hard it is to find the right blue green tourmaline I regret sending that one back, plus the fact that Barry cut it makes me regret returning it even more. Hopefully it found a happy home with another PS'er!
