Is it possible to upgrade diamond?

I was married long ago and, from the beginning, my husband always said we could upgrade my diamond one day. The problem I have is that I think a bigger diamond would stick up much too high for my liking.

The center diamond is .31 ct (4.52mm)

If I were to get a larger diamond (certainly less than 1ct), is there a way to adapt the center so the new diamond wouldn’t stick up too high? Or would it not stick up as high as I think it might?

Thanks for any input or advice! =)2

The title does not say it all. I mean, is it possible to upgrade and not have a larger center stone stick up too high given the space for the center stone in this setting?

I hope this makes sense.

The head can most likely be changed, but I’m not sure by how much.

What size center would you look for?

It is easy peasy to put a new head onto your ring to hold the diamond you desire.

It is a little less easy, but you can also have the new head imbedded into the donut.

Here is a picture of a peg head.

This one is a four prong peg head, your current one is a six prong, and I recommend the six prong highly. The peg is normally inserted into the hole where the previous peg was and soldered into position. I have, when requested, lowered the head into the area designed for the peg and then soldered that into position, when a client has asked to keep the height low and wanted a larger diamond.

P.S. I notice in your pictures that the bottom of your shank is showing wear. You may want to discuss with your jeweler whether or not it is time for a new half shank.

I’m not exactly sure what size I’d want. I’d need to go out looking in person in order to get a sense of what suits me. Nothing too big though.

That’s very informative. Thanks! It doesn’t sound too hard to have a new larger diamond and to keep a lower profile. That’s good to hear.

Showing wear because it’s looking thin? I actually hadn’t noticed that until you mentioned it. What exactly happens when one gets a new half shank? My wedding band is the same. That’s almost a whole new ring. Hmmm....

Part of the shank is cut away and a new portion is built and blended with the ring so that it looks brand new and for MUCH less than making a new ring.

Good spot on the shank thinning, Wink!

LittleRed - have a look at Tension Settings if you are open to a whole new ring, as they can hold the diamond as close to your finger as possible.
