WF vs BGD which stone is better and why?

Setting aside personal preferences for particular proportions combinations (for practically-visible or mind-clean reasons), if the BGD stone is objectively better cut than the WF that OP just released, it is in a way that
1. Is not discernible from the images and photography, and
2. Does not match BGD’s marketing of improved cutting by eliminating lower-energy output “in the Black line bleeding into the Signature line” .

Both are cream of the crop cut quality - the one you’ve chosen will be the most beautiful rock in town @KirstLWA!

@KirstLWA congrats on your choice! It will be stunning in person!

Here is a pic that I have of BGDs knife edge setting. I can’t really tell if it tapers, but that would be a modification you can ask for.

Thanks everyone!

@SimoneDi I’d love some more pics of your ring if you are happy to share? Profile etc would be great! Our bands are very similar also! What size are your eternity stones? Mine are 17 point princess cuts which I think is the same size as 10 point rounds, 3mm.

Are you happy with your solitaire? Does it feel well made and strong/heavy, for want of a better word? Anything you’d change?

Are the prongs very straight up from the donut base or are they slightly cupped like the original? It’s so deceiving in photos!

Your set is stunning!

Oh, after re-reading, perhaps that’s not yours @SimoneDi

Yes, not mine, but I would show them a pic of a Tiffany ring and have them replicate the prongs. Tab prongs with rounded edges. @Miki Moto has shared multiple pics of her beautiful T&Co ring and you can use those to show BGD requested modifications.

Thanks all!!

@diamondseeker2006 and @ac117 that stone had an inclusion visible from the side unfortunately!

I’m leaning towards the bg stone set in the bg tiffany knife edge with some mods to make band thinner etc. the wf and bg knife edge look so similar that I might just ask for the PS mods and it should turn out the same :mrgreen2:

I released the wf stone as I saw someone else was interested in it so didn’t want to hold it when I probably wasn’t going to take it!

Feel free to talk about settings with me ;)2

I'm super happy for you! Welcome to Club BGD!!

I read a post recently about the Vatche, WF and BGD knife edge settings. I will try to find it, but best I recall many seemed to like the Vatche alot but didn't like the price. It seems that bang for the buck, the WF setting with some mods was preferred by many.

My girl didn't want anything nearly that simple so I half paid attention, but my take away was they were all good choices. Hands down, my first preference would be to work with Lesley and Brian to get the setting you want through them so everything stays in-house. However, should you decide to do something different, I have been using DK for a custom setting and they have been very good. Also, I learned Brian and David are buddies from years ago so while it's two different entities, it hasn't been that problematic using two different sources for me.

Just updating that I still haven't made a final decision. Am awaiting a few images to make my final decision and I have thrown an extra in the mix.

So, final contenders are:

https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...ls/2.376-h-vs2-round-diamond-ags-104099046028 - cheapest and relatively small size difference visually

https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...ls/2.541-h-vs2-round-diamond-ags-104098900014 - lovely stone

https://www.hpdiamonds.com/en-us/diamonddetail/HPD9231 - lovely stone

I like settings from both vendors and presume quality wise of the settings they will be on par.

I have a really hard decision ahead of me. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts if you want to take part in the selection journey that hopefully is about to end!!

@KirstLWA beautiful choices to select from! If you are not set on crossing the 2.5ct mark, then I would personally go for the 2.374 H VS2. It is only appx 0.13mm smaller when compared to either of the 2.5ct stones and appx 6k cheaper. So the question is, do you value 0.13mm at 6k? No matter what you select, you will have a gorgeous solitaire!

No matter which you choose, it will be a stunning stone. Just looking at the numbers, I prefer the proportions of the BG stones to the HPD stone in this particular case. I can't tell you whether the $6k is worth the very minimal size difference, but I will say this....you started this upgrade journey several months ago looking for a 3+ carat stone, then went under the 3 carat mark to get the specs you want and now are possibly dropping under the 2.5 carat mark. Is that what YOU really want? Will you take advantage of upgrade policies in the future?

Thanks @SimoneDi that’s the million dollar question!

I’m trying to remove the money side of things and just choose the best stone but they’re all so similar, I don’t know which is best!

Thanks @ac117 im really considering the 2.37 because the size difference is so small that it deserves consideration! It’s specs are great and comparing it to other super ideals of the same size it seems well priced.

I’m going to throw a wrench in the works. I know you’ve been looking at H color diamonds and that is a safe choice, but for the money you’re spending I would want to max the carat weight, so I would go with this one.

https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3932394.htm

Yes, it’s an I, but it’s an ACA diamond, so the sparkle will mostly hide the color, and it gets you over the 9 mm mark. It also is in the same price range as much smaller diamonds you’ve been looking at.

Totally understand, I just want to make sure you are mentally fine with it being below the 2.5 mark =)2 Although at this price, you could always upgrade down the road if you really wanted to!

Sometimes a song is worth a thousand words....:cool2:

I'm guessing you can decide I'm team BGD @ 2.376ct. Why? I like the cert better. Although all 3 stones will be awesome, the 2.37 stone hits all the OPTIMUM characteristics for a H&A. It takes about .20mm+ of size for the naked eye to actually discern the difference.

Oh yeah, almost forgot these babies...

Capture2.PNG
Capture3.PNG

So to recap, you get an optimum H&A, cleaner cert, size that isn't discernable to the naked eye and an extra $6k in your pocket. What's not to love. Go ahead...take the money & run. ;)2

Thanks @coda72 I’m going to say the unthinkable here but it’s a tad too big :eek2: shhhhh, don’t tell anyone I said that!!

That and I am quite scared going to an H so an I would be too big of a leap for me at the moment!

Thanks anyway for checking!

@sledge you’re always hilarious! Thanks! I live on diamb trying to decide if that 3% can be justified.

@ac117 leaves room if I go for that to upgrade to a 2.5 G colour, hitting the upgrade requirements haha!! No, I won’t upgrade this stone!

Life is too short to not smile.

Before you drive yourself too insane, let me slip on my math nerd hat.
  • The larger BGD or HPD diamond comes @ ~19% price increase for 3% square surface area increase
    • The 3% difference is a square mm (mm2) difference
    • 8.61mm x 8.63mm = 74.3043 mm2
    • 8.73mm x 8.76mm = 76.4748 mm2
    • 74.3043 mm2 / 76.4748 mm2 = 97.1618%, meaning there is actually 2.838% difference as opposed to the 3% rounded number we have already mentioned
  • When looking at the individual dimensions, there is less than 1/128th of an inch between them
    • 8.73mm - 8.61mm = 0.12mm
    • 8.76mm - 8.63mm = 0.13mm
    • 0.13mm = 0.00511811 inches
    • For reference, 1/128th inch = 0.007813 & 1/196th inch = 0.005102
Short version = don't stress out. Save the $6k. Fly me to Australia and let's party together and celebrate your wonderful diamond purchase, lol! :cool2:
