Hi everyone :wavey:

Let me start by owning the fact that I am obsessing ridiculously over my choice of my potential center stone. OB-SESS-ING. I mean, it is on my mind day and night because I'm so worried and nervous about if we'll find anything we like when we go to NY next weekend, how bad I'll feel if we spend all of that money for the trip and walk away "stoneless", etc. And the silly thing is this trip was initially planned as just a fun getaway and looking at diamonds came in as a convenient afterthought and is just a small part of our time there, so it's not like the trip won't be memorable otherwise! And my boyfriend has already said it's no big deal if we strike out and need to go back again (love this man!). So it's totally just pressure I'm putting on myself to Get It Right and Not Waste Money and Be Totally Prepared.

Sigh.

Anyway, we have given GOG and IDJ the information on what we're looking for and they're supposed to be pulling in stones for us to see. In the meantime, the great news is that I found one listed on IDJ's website that hit all of our checkboxes and Yekutiel will be bringing it in for us to see, assuming it hasn't been sold yet; we inquired about it a few days ago but the vendor is away for all of Passover and won't be back in the store until next Wednesday... talk about torture and adding to my angst!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, if this stone is everything that it appears to be online... *swoon*. So much more than I thought we'd end up with! I can't bring myself to share the video/cert of the stone (yet) out of fear of jinxing myself, but I will say that I love the corners, the size of the steps, it's the exact parameters of color/clarity we wanted, ALL inclusions are off to the side, and it's about 3/4ct larger than we had initially planned on going. And (be still my heart) it has fluorescence :appl::appl::appl:

But I digress...

I'm worried that, because it's an 8+mm stone, once we put it in the setting we're planning on it will be too "blingy" for my comfort level; I honestly think I'd rather choose a smaller stone instead of a different setting so I need to get this figured out. I really would love to see some shots of hands sporting 11-12mm rings (either close up or perspective) and get your input in to if you knock it in to things with any regularity. Oh, please tell me your finger size too (I'm a 6.75 knuckle and 5.75 base).

For my setting, our plan is to do a modified version of a Sebastien Barier design that I fell in love with years ago; if you're familiar with AsscherGirl's ring, it's that setting. It has a halo on it, so it would take the 8+mm stone and add another 3 or so mm to the top view (if I'm thinking correctly). I'm just not sure if that will be too big.

I swear I'm driving myself crazy trying to picture all of this :wall:

Thanks for letting me ramble, and hopefully some of you will have photos you could share that will help me!

I don't have any photos of such big diamonds , but having the same sized fingers as you, I can honestly say that I don't feel the spread will be too big for your hand. I find anything under 10mm looks small on my paw!

In my opinion an 11mm-12mm spread won't be too big on your 6.75 finger but I tend to be a size ho so that is just my opinion and not fact. But I think you will be just fine with that size. My ring is not that big (about 10.5 mm) but my ring size is 5.75/6 so I am guessing it might look similar. Hope this helps and good luck! So exciting and cannot wait to see what you decide. Enjoy the hunt!

ETA: FWIW I am a klutz and I haven't had any issues with the size of my OEC.

OMG, isn't that the truth?! I keep apologizing to my bf that I have such large fingers for a slender girl who is only 5'4! I tell him at least he got off with my having small earlobes :D. Unfortunately my Mom said that my knuckles will only continue getting larger with age; she was only 5'2 and 105lbs and had size 8 knuckles!

What a gorgeous ring! And your perspective shot is perfect for what I was trying to envision. If I were to see that on a hand I'd think WOWZERS, but not "oh ma gawd... how tacky!", and that's the line I'm trying to find. Of course I understand that everyone has their own definition of wowzers and tacky; I think I'm trying to figure out what mine is - lol. And truthfully, I think I'm realizing that *I* might be okay with how something looks but get wrapped up in concerns about what others might think. But that's another topic for psychological unraveling

And good to hear that you don't knock it around in to things. That puts my mind at ease since I lead a pretty active lifestyle.

:)) I'm 5'5" with tiny feet and like you, small earlobes, so I don't know where these big fingers come from. When I see all these ladies with beautiful dainty hands and slender fingers, I just sigh!

I have a 10 mm stone in a halo. I don't have trouble hitting it on things, but I'm very careful with it. I don't wear it to work. I keep my original engagement ring for wear during work and play.

You can think about your lifestyle, work, and social circles when you are thinking about your comfort level with a large diamond. Personally, I don't think I could have just the 1 large ring. However I do work full time (physician in an under privileged community). I don't think my large ring is appropriate at my work. I also don't feel comfortable wearing it to amusement parks with the kids. I love having it for all other occasions though!!

Good luck deciding!

Thanks for these thoughts. I hardly ever take off any of the jewelry I wear so I think I'm trying to decide if I could be ok with that size for everyday wear. I may have to accept that sometimes I'll have to leave the ring at home (time for a Mrs. Box?!).

Thank you ILikeShiny. I don't wear Bea (or any bling) around the house if I am kicking about just relaxing and I don't wear it if I am doing any kind of cleaning or vacuuming etc. So you make it work for you. That is what bling is for IMO. For *your* enjoyment and really no one else's and you enjoy it the way it works best for you. I say fiddle dee dee about what other people think. Who has the time or energy to worry about what petty, small minded judgmental people think? Life is too precious too short and all too challenging not to take the pleasure and joy where you can and don't give any weight or meaning to people who aren't worth it.

Looking forward to seeing what you decide. And no matter what enjoy the process as well as the fruits of your labor and good luck!

My first ring had a 8.7 mm center and measured about 10.5-11 mm with the halo.
My upgrade is a 9.8 mm solitare. My finger size is 4.75.

SO gorgeous! I love your bands too. Am I seeing correctly that the bezeled one started off smooth and then you had it milgrained?

Good eye, OP! Yes, it was purchased from another vendor with high polish, then David Klass added milgrain. I wish I'd had DK just make the eternity in the first place so the milgrain would be finer. I may eventually just have him make another someday.

I don't think I have any perspective shots right now, and I'm not wearing it at the moment, sorry.

Hi! I had an 8.5mm OEC in a halo, I think it ended up being around 10-11mm total diameter, but I never really measured. The ring was around a size 6. I knock my hands around ALL the time, and this setting really held up (made by CvB). I now have a 3ct OEC in a solitaire, also holding up despite my klutziness.

Hope these photos help you :)

Hi Ilikeshiny, my ring in my profile pic is ~11-12mm total diameter on a size 5.75 finger. I haven't had any issues with damage or feeling over-blingy, but to qualify that, I'd note that my setting is a very low-slung antique (so the height keeps it perhaps more shielded from dangers) and it's an antique stone (so not as much white light jumping off it as your stone will be if you're looking at a modern brilliant). Those disclaimers aside, I think you should go big. You'll grow accustomed to how it looks on your hand! I thought mine was outrageous and OTT when I got it, and now it seems perfect to me. Plus, when I first started wearing it, I had more than one friend fail to notice it on my finger until I pointed it out, so size doesn't inherently equate to in-your-face glitz, apparently. :D

Thanks again for your replies. Unfortunately the stone we were so excited about was snatched up while the vendor was away for Passover (he had sent it to someone to look at before he left and, when they heard someone else wanted it to see it (me!) they decided to keep the stone). So, sigh.... I just have to keep in mind that means it wasn't meant to be mine and there's something better waiting for me (I hope!!)

We're off to NY in a few hours. We meet with GOG tonight and IDJ on Monday. Here's hoping we come back with a winner!!

Sorry to hear you lost the stone you were excited about. I hope you find the perfect one soon! Enjoy your shopping day at GOG! I would love to visit them some day!

Here is the only "real life perspective" shot I have of my ring. The stone is 10mm. The setting adds 2.4 mm I think? This is around a 12.5 mm spread on a 5 1/8 finger.

Here is another picture comparing my CER 10mm ring to my 2.74 AVC pendant (8.58 x 7.78 mm spread) in an SK halo:

Make sure to report back with what you find!!! Happy hunting!
