For our 25 anny. we are upgrading my diamond. I always liked the oval until I saw a beautiful radiant. Actually, I saw 2 radiants, both 4 ct. one was "normal" and the other was a starburst cut. Are these trendy? On an earlier response on this board someone mentioned that there is a lot of light leakage in a radiant cut. Yikes!! For the amount of money we will have to pay this stone needs to be awsome. I'm wondering would I feel at my age (45) that a radiant is for the younger girls and I should stick with an oval. What is the feeling out there? Is it very difficult to find a radiant that is cut close to perfect? I know it is very important. Thanks to all.

While I have spent a lot of time attempting to define a well cut radiant, there is no true system or universal agreement on what makes a perfectly cut diamond, either oval or radiant. You will need to look and observe the characteristics you like in the stones you see.

It is likely that an oval will look larger for the weight than many similar weight radiants. This is primarily a factor of the way they are generally cut. Ovals will have a bit more diameter while most radiants will be a bit deeper.

Don't let diameter or apparent size determine everything however. These stones have different appearances and you need to be the deciding factor with your own preferences. Radiants are popular and ovals are also popular. Fashion is so temporal and the gift will be around long afterwards anyway. Unless you have always been a slave of fashion, get what YOU prefer....It is your money.
