I recently inherited my grandmother's platinum engagement ring. She purchased it about 45 years ago from an estate so I don't know how old it is. She said that it was a miner's cut, and that the jeweler who checked it each year had wanted to buy it from her. That is all that I know about it.
I would like to take it in to have the setting checked and have the diamond appraised. I am a little worried about this since I don't know a thing about the diamond and wouldn't know the difference if someone switched stones. Any advice?

You can send it by FedEx to David Atlas, Accredited Gem Appraisers, www.gemappraisers.com .

David is well known expert in diamonds and in old miner cut in particular. He posts here as Oldminer.

There will be no risk that the diamond could be switched.

You are welcome to send it to me, but you sure could contact Joe Mackley at the company with his name located right in Knoxville. He is a very good gemologist and appraiser and deals in estate items. I am sure he would not switch a diamond, either.

Mackley & Co. is the name of his firm.
