Is it possible for a diamond to develop a flaw inside it that was not there at the time of purchase, but appeared approximately two years later? In my case, a 1.75 carat diamond (round) that looked terrific the last two years suddenly has a flaw inside that looks "frosted" and extends across almost one-quarter of the face of the diamond as you look down on it from above. The flaw is in the shape of a line and is immediately obvious with the naked eye. Could it have happened from hitting the diamond against a hard object by mistake?

I do believe that this is possible. What kind of inclusions did your stone have when you bought it? You should probably take it to an independent appraiser or gemologist to get it checked out.

It sounds like a crack growing inside the crystal...

You definitely need to show it to a specialist. Maybe there is a way to stop it until it's too late.

It's already too late as I described in my first posting. The flaw was not there one day, and then there the next. It's like it came out of nowhere, and it's very, very noticeable as I described. The place where I bought it is very reputable and I have dealt with them for years, so I don't anticipate any problems; though I also don't know what they're going to do. I guess they should replace the stone for me with a comparable one. I posted my question because I wanted to know if the flaw could appear at a later date. I am meeting with the store owner today and I wanted to be sure this could happen to the stone. From tthe replies I am receiving, I guess it can happen. Also, it DID happen, so I would have to argue with anyone who said it's impossible for a flaw to occur later on.

It is possible. For example your diamond could have a microscopic flaw at the surface (especially at the girdle). This defect will work as a nucleus of a crack formation that can be activated by internal as well as external stress.

Expert could tell you what was the real reason of the cracking.

I hope your jeweler has good exchange policy. Let us know how it will work out.

Sounds like a fracture filled diamond like a Koss or Yehuda.
Its my bed time, but someone might look up the subject.
where when and from whom did you buy it?
