I purchased this stone with the following stat.'s. It comes up with 4.9 on the Holloway cut advisor and states "only purchase if price is a concern". I realize I don't have an "EightStar", but when I look at 90% of stones offered for sale I see alot worse Depth percentages and Pavil/Crown angles than mine. Is this stone really all that bad? What is the average "Visual Perf." score? I feel like I have a lemon after running it through the cut advisor.

Hi Drew,

I think we already met somewhere

Seriously, you are right there are tons of much worse stones out there.

You've said David Atlas had seen the stone. What does he think? This stone is belonging to his 2A grade because of the deep pavilion, i.e. it is not an ideal cut.

Garry Holloway penalizes quite hardly stones that are not good enough. I ran your proportions on the DiamCalc software. It shows that for this crown and pavilion angles the stone starts to leak the light under the table and loosing its brilliance.

If you would look on the MSU charts ( www.gemology.addr.com/cut/english/podrobno_2.htm ) you will see that for this combination of C&P the light return is getting below Tolkowsky.

On the other hand, the price is quite fair for this stone. So if you only want to get better cut and cannot exchange it for another one you might want to consider recutting it in order to get pavilion angle about 40.6’-40.7’.

Hope it helps,

Leonid
