WHICH OF THESE FACTORS IS MOST IMPORTANT IN THE COST AND QUALITY OF A DIAMOND: CLARITY, COLOR, OR CARAT WEIGHT? I'M LOOKING INTO A DIAMOND THAT IS .77, F, VVSI, 60.8 DEPTH, 56 TABLE, THN-M GIRDLE, NO CULLET OR FLUOR., AND EX. SYM. & POL. FOR AROUND $4900. THIS IS ABOUT THE MAX. THAT I CAN AFFORD BUT SHOULD I GO UP IN ONE CATEGORY AND DROP IN ANOTHER TO GET A BETTER VALUE STONE? |

Hi JIM, You may want to check out the tutorial on pricescope. You can click on the link on the menu bar. At this page of the tutorial, www.pricescope.com/tutor_summary.asp you can see that there are great price increases with each increase in clarity grade. A VS1 diamond (as well as a properly graded/eye clean VS2/SI1) will look the same to the unaided eye as a VVS1. Going down a few grades will make a big difference in price. In a mounted diamond, you would most likely not be able to tell the difference between a G and an F. It is said that few people can tell the difference between one or two color grades. Also, a very well cut diamond can "face up" whiter than a poorly cut diamond of the same color grade. Hope this is helpful, [This message has been edited by lawmax (edited 11-26-2000).] |

JIM Is this a branded hearts and arrows stone from Tradeshop? It looks like a good price. Since Tradeshop posts the Sarin report, why not take the table percentage, crown angle, and pavilion angle information and check out the stone in the Holloway Cut Adviser (see the menu bar at the bottom of the page)? Do the video and tutorial first and then the cut adviser should help you make your decision. Good luck! |

Jim- If you would like to drop the clarity grade as Lawmax suggests you can save quite a bit of $$$. Jim www.CalvinDiamonds.com [This message has been edited by glenncal1 (edited 11-27-2000).] |
