I am thinking about purchasing this stone from a local jeweler that has been trying desperately to compete with internet prices. This stone is graded by the Israeli EGL and he is asking $10,800. Here are the characteristics of the stone:

Carat: 1.51
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
Depth: 62.4%
Table: 57%
Crown: 15%
Pavillion: 43%
Polish: VG
Symmetry: VG
Girdle: Med, Faceted
Culet: None
Flourescence: None

I have seen this stone and it is extremely beautiful. It scores a 1.3 on the HCA. I have seen similar stones for about $9500 on the internet. He says he would have to pay more than that in order to sell it to me. Very confused??

Santo, I've checked the price stats on G, VS2 stones, and anything above 1.48 carats is running about $13K-14K.  I'd be curious to know where you're seeing similarly well-cut stones of this color/clarity/weight for $9500.

If you've seen the stone and it looks beautiful, then go with it.  Just be sure you negotiate a generous return policy and have it independently appraised.  This is really important because EGL Israel is notoriously lenient in their grading, and if the grading if off substantially, it would affect the reasonableness of your price.

Good luck.

Yes, you can find similar diamonds for in the mid $9000 range - especially EGL graded diamonds. As aljdewey stated EGL tends to be more lenient on their grading as compared to GIA or AGS.

The price that was quoted to you for the diamond, if the grading is accurate, is very good for a B&M diamond. You need to consider the overhead that B&Ms must incur versus on-line vendor overhead. On-line vendors can live with lower margins because their overhead is typically a lot less than the traditional store vendors.

If the diamond is as beautiful as you purport it to be, then by all means try to negotiate a lower price. However, do not get in yur head that he should sell it to you for $9500 because he simply can't. Try to see how much lower he is willing to lower the price especially if he is really trying to be competitive to on-line. Having said that, please note that competitive does not mean matching on-line prices but be within a reasonable ballpark.

I appreciate the input that you guys have posted. I definitely agree overhead is higher for a jeweler, however, he is just a small shop so it can't be huge. For a difference of $3-400 I would buy from him but $1300 is too much of a difference. I am going there now to negotiate and I hope it all goes well. Thanks again!!!

Keep in mind thait would very likely get something like an I color SI 1 at the GIA. EGL Israel is very lenient and their grading is not comparable to GIA or HRD. There are slight chances that this stone has been graded properly, but that would be an exception and not the rule. If you do a search, you'll see an atricle posted by LawGem(at least I think so), where EGL USA asked to ban EGL reports issued is Israel. Let's consider it's H/SI 1. I'm not trying to discourage you, but we have heard many stories about people who lost money buying an over graded diamond (case in point EGL Israel). Be sure to check the retrn policy and bring it to an appraiser. You'll see that those $100 are really worth it!
