I picked up my ring - a solitaire in a tiffany style, 6-claw setting and it looked OK when I first saw it, but everyone I show it to immediately notices that 3 of the claws are dark gray/black on top. I'm almost positive it's from the heat used to form the claws.
Can this be repaired? When viewed from the top you can see 3 claws are darker than the rest and it really detracts from the "white" diamond. I'm returning it today to the store I bought it from but I just wanted you opinion before I talk to this guy. Thanks.

BTW the ring is unplated, 14kt white gold (I imagine the claws are the same?)

Who did you get it from? Sometimes the prongs will be set in platinum....Take it back.

In Toronto - a store called Diamond's Unlimited. It seems like a very professional store and he treated me well, which is why I'm surprised that he let something of this quality leave his store.

In the photo you can clearly see the top 3 prongs are nowhere near as shiny as the bottom 3.

I'm just worried that he'll give me the runaround because I don't have much time left before I present the ring.

Sounds as though they may have not completed the refinishing part of the repair. This is not a major step but is very important to the end result. Take it back and ask them to correct it, they should be happy to resolve this problem.

Cheers,
Steve

Screw the runaround Guido....did you Charge the Ring? If so you have a great deal of leverage. If you paid cash you still have a valid consumer complaint about misrepresenation. Be cool and level headed when you talk with the dude but dont be a chump, just ask the jeweler to finish the polish on your ring. I Betcha it will work out just fine.

Why not assume that he will be happy to take care of this and pay him a visit. My guess is this will be fixed while you wait, it is all of a five minute process.

Heck I'll do it at no charge and it didn't come from me.

One of the most simple problems to solve, not to worry.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks for the quick replies, I just wanted to be sure it wasn't something major and that it can be repaired easily.

I want to specify that I may totally be over-reacting about this as I have no indication whatsoever that the store won't satisfy me 100%. They've been very good to me so far and this could be a simple over-sight. To be honest, the man I was dealing with (the owner) wasn't there when I picked up the ring, so he may not have even seen it.

I just wanted to be 100% sure that this is not normal and I shouldn't have to live with it. Basically, I wanted to cover ALL my bases before going to see the guy. Just in case.

I didn't buy the ring with platinum prongs, it's supposed to be unplated (no rhodium) 14k, white gold.
My un-skilled assumption would be that if it really is unplated then can't it just be buffed to the next "layer" of clean gold to bring back the shine? Or do they actually plate it with something after applying heat to bend the prongs?

Thanks Steve! That's what I wanted to hear!

I'm just wondering - it's a big store but he actually sent my ring out to be placed in the setting - do you think he'll have to send it out again to do this fix? Just curious as I'm running out of time.

First of all there is no heat applied to bend the prong.

The ring may have been sized and the heat was from that. Should be sized before the diamond is set (ideal situation).

Or the prongs were not refinished after the pliers were used on the prongs.

Could even be a residue from polishing.

Can't tell from a photo but it isn't a serious problem.

They will simply buff the prongs slightly, clean it up and your done. You may ask them to plate it if you like; it will make the entire ring whiter for the initial presentation.

Cheers,
Steve

Oops...... posting at the same time!

I can't answer if he will have to send it off. I would hope not. You may have to take it to another local store to have it done, then have the person you bought it from pay them if they charge you for this.

Best of luck!

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks again Steve!
When you say plated - do you mean with rhodium? If so, I specifically asked them not to plate it because I was told that the plating wears off and needs to be re-applied frequently. I don't know if my g/f would want to do this. So I bought the ring unplated, but with the provision of one free plating in case my g/f likes it better.

Hopefully after a quick buff all will be well! I'll visit them tonight and update everyone tomorrow.

Thanks for all the help! What a relief!!!!

Yes I was speaking about rhodium, and yes it will wear off, but this isn't something that wears off overnight. It is a slow change that most people would never notice.

Him plating it should be no big thing either. We plated two rings so far today at no charge.... customer service should handle these small items.

Remember; Problems are life threatening, what we tend to call problems are inconveniences.

I look forward to your reply after your visit!

Cheers,
Steve

Great perpective!!!

Also, Guido, have you tried to take a soft toothbrush to it. I had a tiny amount of reside on a part of my ring. I took a toothbrush to it & poof - gone. But, mine is platinum.

Hi, for all those who care here is an update - basically I brought it to the store and his first reaction was "wow, I never saw that before". He's been in the business for over 20 years. He said he's not sure what it is but thinks it's some chemical that must have touched it when the ring was assembled. Maybe the guy who set the stone used a dirty rag or something. Anyway, long story short he put it on the polishing wheel and in less than 10 seconds it was gone and now it looks perfect! What a relief!

fire&ice: I didn't want to try cleaning it myself in case I ruin it then it becomes my fault. It's less than a week old so I figued the safe thing is to just return it and let them deal with it. In hindsight a toothbrush might have worked.

Thanks again to everyone for their advice and help!!!

Guido

Glad it worked out.

Hah - there's nothing that a toothbrush, duct tape & a coat hanger can't fix.

I'm happy to hear all you had was a minor inconvenience

It didn't sound as it was going to be anything more than it was. Now just enjoy...

Thanks again everyone.

Judy the proposal is Nov 15th - a couple days after her birthday so she thinks it's a b-day celebration. She has absolutely no idea, I even bought the ring without getting any advice/hints from her so I don't even know if she'll like it! ha!
I went with a cheapie setting so she can change it if she doesn't like it.
Anyway, here's a photo of it.
.76ct, F, SI2, good cut.
I like the way it looks, that's why I bought it.
