I plan to buy a mounting at store in Chicago and buy a loose diamond via the internet. The mounting is 6 prong platinum for a 1.2 carrot stone (it already has two pear shape stones on the sides). If I pay the full retail price of the setting (around $2,000) is it reasonable to get the stone mounted for free since I paid full price or how much should I expect for the mounting price since it isn't their diamond?

Mounting price shouldn't be too high. I would expect about $100. Just insure the stone prior to mounting because in the case of chipping your jeweler won't cover it.

If you are paying $2K for a mounting that ought to include the setting of the diamond.

Also, if a jeweler chips your diamond during setting, your insurance will NOT cover this damage. This is a liability taken on by the jeweler, not your insurer. Be sure the jeweler will be responsible about possible damage in setting before you leave the stone. Don't get caught up in an insurance fraud situation with a false claim of damage.

Remember, part of the price and part of the value of using a professional jeweler is their willingness to take on the responsibility for the safety and condition of your diamond while it is being worked on. This costs money and time. It is worth something to be secure and properly served.
