I've posted 3 threads to-date and I've concluded that all the expertise that I need to "coach" me in the purchase of a 3ct princess stone, to find an awesome setting, and then package the deal with both quality and cost effectiveness is only "clicks" away! I'm seeking my "dream team" that will help coach me over the next 90 days. Why 90? My bonus hits the end of January! My budget is $34k tops. Besides, as a professional risk manager - "i feel safer with a planned approach!" ...lol.. My "amateur plan" consists of the following: ![]() NOV: seek answers/education to the basics: cuts, dimensions, "tools" to assist, appraisals, flouresence, clarity, etc. Objective: narrow range of stats to look at DEC: Brick and Morter shop stones for visual education, seek assistance with setting selection (custom/mass) & secondary stone selection. Objective: comfort level with visual identification of a good quality stone; setting & secondary stone selection. JAN: shop main stone online, perform "tests" on preferred stones, purchase stone, appraisal, mount, "Pay"...:>( Objectives: "Awesome Stone mounted and ready to rock a special woman's world!" PLEASE RESPOND IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN BEING PART OF MY "DREAM TEAM" FOR THIS JOURNEY AND, ALSO LET ME KNOW YOUR OPPINIONS ON 1) MY BUDGET (REASONABLE/HIGH/LOW) FOR A HIGH QUALTIY RING OF THIS SIZE AND 2) IF MY PLAN SEEMS REASONABLE - IF NOT, PLEASE ADVISE. Thanks, Team!!![:read:] "Appreciative-of-expertise" |

Don't know enough about Princess cuts to advise, but check out www.gemappraisers.com for great cut specs. As to budget, if you buy on the net you should have 10 or 12K left when you're done (unless you're looking for a D VVS1 or something like it).

You definitely have all the bases covered...your plan sounds very well thought out--though your approach is somewhat so clinical that it gives me 'sounds like my boss' chills. Your budget is excellent for a 3ct princess cut with setting etc--you will have more than enough. Definitely do not get taken for a ride offline by a B&M who tells you otherwise. Unfortunately I can't be of much actual help because I don't know much about fancy cut stones...if you were looking for a round...I'd be much more useful!
![]() However, www.gemappraisers.com is an excellent site to view information on fancies...be sure that whatever stone information you get has crown and pavilion angles so you can run it through the DIY cut grader on GA.
Definitely read the tutorial on Pscope and on various other sites such as GoodOldGold, and read up on GemAppraisers. This will help you determine what sort of information is out there on fancy cut stones...there is always more info on round than fancies...but if you are good at research, you can dredge up what you need to know.
I will say that fancies are hard to gauge cut quality with...so get yourself an IdealScope. It's about $25 on Garry's website. Learn to use it correctly. Take it with you as you research offline. It will help you gauge how to find well-cut princesses which exhibit alot of light return. You are looking for stones that have great light return, esp hard to find in cuts like princess. Rhino/Jonathan from GOG just posted a princess cut stone that he hand picked...you most likely will want to go with a cut such as that instead of a random cut that you find on a website or in a random B&M. If you decide to purchase offline, the IS will help you weed out bad performers. If you decide to purchase online, you may only want to use companies that hand-pick their princess cut stones, or have them in inventory (not virtual but physical). Then you can get them to give you much more information on a stone they have in stock than one that a wholesaler carries. I know also that SuperbCert is supposed to have very beautiful and excellently cut princess stones. Would also suggest looking into GOG for their fancy stones.
Best of luck and be sure to ask questions here on Pscope when you need help. I don't know that you need a 'dream team' to help you, the people on Pscope in general are very helpful if your questions are specific and you have done the preliminary research and understand the basics.
Most of all, enjoy the search and this time! You have a great timeline...and a great budget, it will be a blast to create your ring.

I myself recently purchased a Princess, 1.2 carat, D, VVS2. After reading many discussions on pricescope and educating myself, I decided to purchase the centre diamond online, as I had taken her out engagement ring dream building a year and a half earlier. So the surprise has always been when. Like yourself money wasn't an issue, for me it was about getting the best possible diamond for my love. There are many great online vendors recommended on this forum. I ultimately ended up going with www.superbcert.com as the branded diamond gave me that little extra piece of mind. I'd certainly recommend getting into contact with Judah & Barry, or any of the other vendors. They will be more than glad to help. Good luck and I look forward to following your journey. All good |

You should e able to get quite a rock with your budget! ![]() I did a little search and found out that an excellently cut 3ct princess cut is about $21K in G/SI 1, the same for an H/VS 2, about $30K in E/VS 2 quality. I'd suggest staying in the VS 1-SI 1 range (so that you won't have big nasty inclusions visible to the naked eye. Not many SI 1's at this size will be eye-clean, but they may be worth a call asking about how they looks. As for color, I'd stay in the E-H range. Color shows up a little more easily in fancy shapes, but if don't mind a *very very* slight tint, you can go even with an I or a J with some fluorescence. But I'd stay within E-H. If you like H color, you can get a 4(!)cts w/SI 1 clarity at about $27K. It also depends on the kind of setting you're looking for. I'd go for something very plain and simple to show off the stone at its best, so that it won't outpower the already gorgeous center stone. If you want something fancier, I'd go for a trillion sides setting. ![]() Take some time and start reading tutorials at Good Old Gold and have a look at the charts you can find at AGA. Also, as many suggested I'd buy an IdealScope. You'll see how many dogs we have out there!
