I hear so much about how a women's bridal set is to be worn and they both sound logically but which one is correct. #1 your band (the one you get at the wedding) is put on first to be closet to your heart and then your engagement. #2 your wear your engagement ring first then your wedding band because the band seals your engagement and is considered the convenant of that engagement. Which is right???????????????

In the U.S. (I don't if it's different elsewhere) the wedding ring goes closest to your heart--thus is first on the finger.

Interesting question as I have never heard the second reason before regarding the sealing of the engagement. I've always heard the wedding band goes on first. I guess that also makes sense because not everyone has an engagement band and thus the wedding band is going to be the primary band. At least in my wedding, I was told not to wear my engagement ring on my left hand for the ceremony and that only the wedding band would be placed on my left finger and I could put my engagement ring on after the ceremony. I think it will be interesting to hear what other people have to say about this.

I always heard the wedding ring goes on first (closest to your heart) and that it stays on your finger always. Then the ering goes on and can be taken on and off when necessary. My parents both have simple thin wedding bands which they have rarely removed in 50 years of marriage. My father never took his wedding band off until about 10 years ago when he fractured his wrist and had to have his ring cut off because of the swelling. He had it repaired afterward and it has not been taken off since.
I think people remove their wedding rings more freely now as they tend to be more elaborate than in our parents' era. I have my original wedding ring with no stones at all that I wear by itself on occasion (it means more to me than ANY of my jewelry and I would be emotionally crushed if anything ever happened to it). But mostly I wear my anniversary band (which goes on first) and then put my ering on in front.

Traditionally, wedding band goes first for the sentimental "close to your heart" reason and the traditional/superstitious "never remove your wedding band" reason. I know several people that are VERY superstitious about removing their wedding bands - they think it will cause their marriage to end! Personally, I wear the engagement ring first. I just like the way it looks better, and feel like it's safer for my stone. I'm not altogether sure it matters, unless someone you care about has a strong opinion. I mean, they both represent committment and the same man, so does it matter which is closer to your heart? "Where ever you go, there you are." |

There is no hard and fast rule. It is a matter of personal choice.

I've noticed around the office that women tend to wear their wedding band first, then their engagement ring. I don't know if it's a traditional thing or a cultural thing or just personal preference. Speaking of culture, I was very surprised to learn that my Asian co-worker wears her engagement ring on her middle finger, left hand. Apparently that's the finger people in Hong Kong wear it on. After marriage, the ring is transfered to the fourth finger. Must be a pain to have to resize it. ![]()

I have a question on this topic, depending on the response I might not have to start a new thread. I just got my Fiancee a Tiffany Style Superbcerts H&A knock-out platinum ring. We both love it. The question is; 1) What type of wedding band would go with this ring? WOuld a plain platinum band mess with the "look" of the ring? 2) Could we just use the E-ring as "The Ring" and not get a band? Hi! Newbie here...long-time lurker. ![]() I'm not sure if this is due to my Spanish heritage or not, but, growing up I was always told that wearing a band "first" and the engagement ring "second" (if this makes any sense) meant that your husband was still alive and that only when a woman becomes a widow is when the rings are exchanged in position, therefore conveying the fact that she's a widow, to whomever decides to notice the wearer's rings. Even when I switch my rings, just for the "fun" of it, my mother goes ballistic! ![]() Just my $.02 ! v/r, Lucy --Lucy |

Tradition has it closet to your heart - or the first ring on.

The engagement ring is moved to the right hand for the wedding ceremony, and the wedding band placed on the third finger of the left hand...closest to the heart. Then the engagement ring goes on after the wedding band is in place.
