What should I expect to pay for a setting?

First of all, I can't tell you how helpful these forums have been as I learn more about diamonds in anticipation of buying an engagement ring. I've gone from not knowing that much, to clearly knowing more than the sales people I've seen in some B&M stores.

I've been compiling a list of stones from some of the merchants who have good reps here, like SuperbCert, USA Certed, Good Old Gold and Whiteflash.

I'm looking at a total budget of somewhere around $3,000, which leads me to believe I can get a really well cut stone around .75c, in the I-J range, and eye clean.

The one thing I'm having trouble figuring out is what a setting might cost me. I'm looking for a "Tiffanyesque" 6-prong setting in platinum.

Is there a range that I should expect to pay for a setting like that, either online or at a B&M place near me?

Also, I've been following the threads about J's, and it seems like the consensus is that a well-cut J will face up plenty white, and be OK in platinum, right?

If you want an ordinary 6 prong setting (which is a faaaaaaaaar cry from Tiffany's one) it will be about $ 300-350.
One of the closest things to the real thing I've seen is the one made by superbcert which is about $850.00-. Also, I know Derek got his setting from a Lazare Kaplane dealer. I believe he even fooled a tiffany's sale representative (!).

Or, if you love risks, you always have eBay!

In your total price range the Tiffany look mounting in the low $300 range would probably be a good thing to strongly consider. You can upgrade the mounting for a present a few months or a couple of years after the engagement. It would be a real treat for someone to shop for a special new mounting for a diamond they love. You do not have to feel compelled to spend close to $1000 for a nice mounting although many people feel it is part of the what they need to do.... Each couple have their own priorities and that is the way it ought to be.

There are some differences between the less costly and more costly rings. How significant they are is very subjective in most respects. I have driven and owned both very costly and very inexpensive cars. Right now I have a rather inexpensive one that, strange as it may seem, I like much more than many far more exotic or costly ones. My friends don't understand. My wife wonders a little, too.... Whatever floats your boat!
