I know well enough by now that buying a diamond from a mall jeweler would be just plain stupid. But how about just the ring setting?
Any of you buy your setting there? Or checked out the prices? I'm wondering how they compare to online vendors?

You just have to do some shopping. It could be that you could find the one you want locally. I didnt buy mine from a Maul shop, but rather an independent family business. They were, lucky for me, a Scott Kay dealer. I checked online & all over the U.S & found that my mount was $2150 across the board. Erik Carlson of Joe Escobar Diamonds in California said he would offer it to me for $1900. Then I went to my local store & they said it would be $1650 (taxes in) (U.S equivalent). Heck, local sounded good to me!
Perhaps it would be good to look into family owned/private owned businesses instead of maul stores. I think a few of us have gone this route.

Hi Princess!

My sister did that! She was way ahead of DeBeers on the right hand ring. She's always loved Heart shaped cut diamonds and wanted a ring. Sis was also working on a relatively tight "mental" budget of $1,000 for a half carat center stone ring.

She didn't like the diamonds she saw in person, and the asking prices were outrageous. She started searching for the diamond on-line. She purchased a GIA Certed, .48 ct, E, VVS2 for about $800 (I think??) through a Net Vendor. But the setting was a different story.

She shopped around on the Net looking for a set. Once she found a style that she liked, she started hunting for it in local B&M's. She's very much a feel person when it comes to jewelry, and especially rings. Sis wanted to be sure the set was comfortable to wear and looked good on her.

As it turned out, the set she liked on-line was available at Zales. Same manufacturer. Zales was having a "sale" making the price comparable to the Net price she had seen. Soooo, she had her Net find diamond set in a mount she purchased from Zales. Zales wanted $1800-$2000 for the same ring with a piece of frozen spit, lack luster, dead fish as the center stone.

Due to some saavy shopping on her part, and the sale at Zales, she came in only a tad over budget. Sales tax, setting, and appraisal fee total came to just under $1100. She got a very sparkly Heart shape diamond, the appraisal came in much higher than she paid total for the diamond/mount/setting fee, she got the feel and look she wanted, and she loves her ring!

Maul stores are good for something sometimes!

Why use a big word when a diminutive word would be succinct!

We got my setting from a Mall Jeweler - only because they are the ONLY place around that sells Verragio settings that I wanted. I too was against the whole mall thing, but because we were getting a designer setting only..not the center stone.. I felt a little better about it. My fiance didn't pay sticker price as they quoted him, he talked them down a bit. So.. some things can still work out for you! They have been super nice and I would recommend them to anyone so far!
