I've been blown away by the number of prominent Republicans that have come out in favor of the Democratic candidate this election.  Then I was even more blown away when my 75 year old uncle announced that HE was voting Democrat for the first time.  (My 76 year old dad is still voting Republican, and not too happy with his brother!)

Does anyone else know someone that is not voting their party this election?

I know about a dozen republicans, mostly moderate, who will be voting for Obama. All them changed over when McCain choose Plain, they were truly horrified and it caused them to take a second look at Obama. My mom said if my grandpa was still alive he would have voted for Obama in this election. He was a republican politician for most of his life and I believe he actually knew McCain, but Palin is what he called one of the "house crazies". He left politics when that brand of conservatives took over the party.

Me too!!  And honestly, some of the crossovers would have my first born right now if I would have put a bet on their vote a few months ago.  It's shocking.

I know a well known radio personality who has always backed the republican party, but this election he's voting for Obama.  His listeners are furious with him.  I have known him since I graduated college, he's a straight shooter.  I most likely will be crossing party lines as well.

HA!!  I am still conflicted.  I am a republican.  I wanted to vote for Obama, but now am having doubts.  I want to see that tape that the LA times is holding hostage.  I think my vote will go to Obama.  I just need this one thing cleared up in my mind.

You have given my MB away more times than I can count DF.  You think I want to share the wealth with you??  Try again my friend, you even wanted my cake.  Remember you said to AGBF,  don't send the cake to Lisa, she's on a diet??  Paws off my cake, my MB and my diamonds...     But you can have a shot of my grandfather's Remy Martin.    You might need it after the election!!

I want to see that tape that the LA times is holding hostage.

It's a *toast* ... a simple, cordial toast at a professional dinner amongst fellow academics. I don't think there's a big secret why they're not releasing it AT ALL -- they promised a source & they're sticking to their word. End of story. (IMHO)

Why won't the Navy release the details of McCain's rumored FATAL car accident at the gate of a Navy Base back in 1967. The claim its "not topical" now. But Vanity Fair is suing for release. Apparently local policemen were called to the scene also & haven't remained as silent as the Navy Brick Wall. Oh, this was during the period McCain was a huge BOOZER ... DWI?? Where are his medical records after that accident that would show impairment or not?

And where are PALIN's medical records? She promised to release them -- during a live TV interview. But nothing. Fishy fishy fishy. Wait 'til the whole horrible truth comes out. That'll have 'em talking for decades. Again IMHO. Oh ... and was she LYING when she promised to release them & didn't -- LYING like not taking public financing blah blah. Some LIES are a-ok I guess.

(Not directed at you Kaleigh!!! Just thoughts I had after giving my opinion on the toast)

Both of my 70+ year old parents and their spouses as well as myself are jumping the Republican ship in favor of the Democrat this time around.

My dad's friend, a hardcore Republican, is voting for Obama. He's in that top 2% of the population wealth wise. He hates McCain.

I have been trying to get my husband to do this. But he won't. I was on the fence although I am not a diehard R. I am not even sure how I am registered. I was considering McCain until A) He said the economy was fundamentally strong and B) Palin.

I think my husband and his mother are the only ones left voting for McCain. I have to leave the room when he talks to his mom on the phone. I told him to stop talking to me about politics when he reminded me this morning that Al Gore invented the internet.

My husband & I are both independents, but he's voting Democrat this time.  He actually hasn't voted at all for the past several elections, because he's hated all the candidates, so for him, actually bothering to go vote for Obama is a big deal - it means that he really believes in this candidate.

Several of my friends who are in the armed forces and usually vote Republican are voting Obama, basically because they believe that with McCain there is no end in sight to the stuff in the Middle East and they're sick of being shipped over there and watching their friends die. I will say that I do have other friends who are soldiers though and are still sticking with McCain because they believe he'd be a stronger advocate for them.

Well, I personally know a few who are jumping party lines this year, mostly moderate Republicans very uncomfortable at the tenor of McCain campaign in general and finally sent over the edge by the choice of Palin.

I went to Norman Oklahoma this morning (home of Oklahoma University) and the lines downtown for early voting were just stunning.  A full city block long - and Norman is NOT a large city at all.   And being a college town I suspect it isn't all that conservative, at least by Oklahoma standards.  McCain will of course, win here, but I will be so interested to see the actual popular vote margin here when all is said and done...

The question was not why people were crossing lines, it was if we know anyone that is.

My parents are Republicans. My mom talked about Obama like he was the antichrist for the first month. Then she started really listening to both candidates. Then the Palin pick. She's voting for Obama (my dad too) now. Palin was really the final straw

I'll be interested to see how their tons of numbers compare to the Republicans that crossover.  I'll admit, I have no idea.  I don't personally know a PUMA.  I went trick or treating with my neighbors and their children last night.  Both sets of these neighbors have McCain-Palin signs in their yards so I thought maybe they knew a PUMA, but they didn't either.  They had lots of Republican friends and relatives defecting the other way though.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Estimates range, one estimate from Susan Estrich(sp) a few months ago was around 2 million.

Thanks Sarah, that was a fairly unambiguous clue.

This is why I loathe party affliliations.  They are just like gangs.  In fact, the entire gang psychology can be understood when taught with a political party analogy.

Now, if society could only use the same philosophy in politics as they do when dismantling gang psychology in it's formative stages, maybe we could achieve some real political breakthroughs.
