I am looking to buy a diamond from a discount jeweler in my area. He has been in business for about 15 years. I checked the better business bureau's website and the place only had one dispute and it was resolved. He seemed pretty up front with me and honest. The diamond is, 1/2 carat VS2 E and the dimensions: Measurements: 4.95 - 4.9 x 3.21 mm Dpt 65.1% Tbl 59% cwn 13.6 Pav 45 Grdle Slightly thick to thick fac Culet none Certified by EGL on May 8th 2003 Asking price $1,900. Is this a good deal? James |

That's a pretty deep stone! Both the total depth and pavilion depth are way too deep! We wouldn't give it a second glance. Spend some time reading the tutorials here on Price Scope, they'll help you keep you get from being burned by something like this...

When you say get burned, what do you mean? This diamond isn't worth $1900?

Can anyone else offer me some help? I know this diamond is a little thick, but it looked pretty briliant to me. I am on a limited budget and this diamond looked good to me. The diamond doesn't have to be an ideal cut diamond. I just want to make sure that this diamond is worth paying $1900 for it. Thank you. James |

---------------- James, By your desription, the diamond is not a very well cut diamond - you can even categorize it as a poor cut. As niceice stated, pass on this diamond. If you are hung up on cost, $1900 is way to much for this quality. Typical diamonds in this category can be found for $1200 to $1500. So not only are you getting a bad diamond you are paying way too much for it - hence you are getting burnt on this deal if you go forward. And if you are looking for 1/2 ct diamonds in the $1900 price range, you can find many H&A quality diamonds for under $1900. This, of course, is just a point of reference. If an ideal cut is not a factor you can get a much bigger diamond than 1/2 ct and still be under $1900 especially if you are willing to go down slightly in color and/or clarity. Happy hunting.

You are paying for carat weight that you will not see - that is why this deep stone is not a good buy. A good deal of carat weight is lost in the pavillion of the diamond (which is the bottom part - that you do not see face up). Continue to look & read the tutorial here. I think you will be able to find something better. Good luck.

Ok, I found a different jeweler to deal with and he seems more respectable. Here is the diamond: .59 round E SI1 Ideal 5.41-5.37 x 3.34 Depth 62 Table 58 crown 15 pav 44 thn facet sym VG polish vg Culet none Flur none Price $1950 I also have a question about smaller carat stones as well. Is $500 too much for 2 diamonds that have a total weight of .37? Thank you all again for your past and future help! James |
