Does anyone have any hints on what to look for in a local jeweller? I'm in the market for a diamond for an engagement ring. I consider myself fairly educated on the four-C's, but I always feel like I'm being cheated when I go up against a jeweller.

find someone who isn't pushy and asks you what kind of diamond specifications you want rather than trying to get you to buy a poor diamond.

Buy online - I did a ton of research and visited several local jewelers. All tried to sell me crappy stones for gobs of $$$$$. They were not really dishonest but did not guide me in the right directions. I found that they wanted only to sell what they had in stock and were not really interested in getting in stones that I might be interested in. The prices and quality seem to be substantially better online. Vendors who advertise want to make their customers happy. If they are not, they can vent on the forum and other places and well...thats that.

Pick a vendor with a good return policy and enough time to have the stone appraised. I tried to do it locally so I could view the stones in person. That did not work out at all. I bought one on line and it was lovely but I wasn't too happy with the color. I returned it, got my money back and purchased a new one. Just got it yesterday and I love it.

The people on this forum guided me through every step of the way. Ask alot of questions, get all the diamond spec and they will analyze the stones for you. There are alot of great vendors out there. You will get a better stone for the money you want to spend. Overhead it totally different and the no sales tax is a total bonus. Some vendors also offer free shipping.
I looked for almost 3 months and tried nearly everything. Don't be in a rush. Good luck.
