After doing research on Pricescope, I went to Diasource in Los Angeles to see some round 1 carat H&As in person. The salesman was nice, but not too knowledgable. Also, most of their stones are in Arizona so I only saw a few. After looking at them through a H&A viewer, I could clearly see what an H&A diamond is. Looks great! However once mounted, you won't see the H&A, right? When looking at them with the human (untrained nubie) eye, I could not find a great difference between a H&A and a non-H&A diamond (F color, VS2, ideal cut, AGS000, excellent polish and symmetry, 61% depth, 57% table, GIA so no angle %). Is there a big difference or am I just blind? JorgeP |

Performance is in the eye of the beholder, Jorgep. I did see a difference in performance when comparing a well cut diamond and a H&A, side by side. If you didn't, don't worry about it. Some people here on the Forum are color sensitive. They see yellow in extremely well cut H, I, and J color diamonds. You may not. I tried a H and a J, H&A, mock set against white gold and platinum and both performed beautifully. If I put the J side by side with a D/E/F, I'd see the color difference. But alone, the J color H&A appeared very white and sparkly. Fire and Ice often says that "the super douper louper" isn't for every diamond buyer. That is right. Look for the diamond that speaks to you.

Just because a diamond is a H&A doesn't mean that it'll outperform non-H&A diamonds. H&A signifies a well cut diamond that has exceptional optical symmetry but it'll still somes down to the how the crown and pav angles. Note that the Arrow pattern of a H&A diamond can be noticed in diffused lighting, especially in larger stones but I agree that it is hard to distinguish a H&A from that of a well cut non-H&A diamond. H&A diamond demands a premium and I would rather get a better quality stone than an H&A in the same price range.

Magna is right! I do see the arrows all the time! Once mounted, the Arrows will be visible to the naked eye.

A hearts and arrows diamond is one that has exceptional optical symmetry or what Brian calls "super symmetry". There are many jewelers and other vendors calling their diamonds "hearts and arrows" when they are not. Showing a new diamond buyer the hearts and arrows under a H&A scope would not prove anything unless the buyer knew something about the differences in what makes a H&A. There is a standard for what makes a diamond a Hearts and Arrows diamond and most that are making that claim do not meet that standard. There is a huge difference is what a true H&A diamond looks like and a regular cut diamond but there are those that cannot see that difference. Even if you cannot see the difference others will and the person wearing the H&A diamond will receive many expressions of admiration for her beautiful diamond. Guys can usually see the differences in cars and ladies can usually see the differences in diamonds. The opposite is not as true. A lady can understand why her diamond is not a large as someone elses but she cannot understand why her diamond is not as pretty! dimonbob, GG |

Sooooo true, Diamond Bob! I get compliments all the time on how sparkly my H&A diamond is even when it's not clean!![]() When I've commented on the unique design of someone's ring with a piece of frozen spit for a center set diamond, they rarely thrust it forward for closer inspection. Women know even when men don't!

On a completely unscientific note: I just purchased a Hearts and Arrows stone and during the Phantom of the Opera Intermission last night (Medium Light Conditions) this baby appeared on fire, My Fiancée sat on it because she was embarrassed! Battle the Obfuscation |

So you Hearts and Arrows owners who allege your stones are on fire, what size stones are we talking about here? Goldenringlets Goldenringlets |

---------------- I bought a 1.115 ct A CUT ABOVE from Whiteflash and it certainly is quite fire-y.
