Hi ! I need some help in finding a pair of lose diamonds for studs. Not a huge budget, that's why I need your advice on where to look for them.

My mom lost one of her solitaire studs (heirloom, some old european cut). Well, actually she just lost one of the stones. She decided to make a ring out of the remaining stone, because she has been looking far and wide for a matching pair and couldn't find any. She also decided to find a pair of matching stones to be set into the old setting, so she can "make the most" of the heirloom (or maybe it's just an excuse to get more blings ????).

The setting measures about 5.3mm in diameter (I have them with me, because she said I'm more resourceful one, whatever that might mean). She is thinking of spending around 1,500 for a pair of them. Is this reasonable ?

I've always been scared to ask questions before, because the diamonds always seemed to be so expensive for me. But now that it's not my money to spend.... it makes it a huge different   . And I think this forum can give me some leads considering all the experts here. Maybe this is what she meant by my being more resourceful (??).

Anyway, I looked up the search tool here, and they came up with stones of the same measurement for less than 900 (I think it was an I Si1 and a little over half a carat) for pricescope visitors (???). The setting is 22K yellow gold 6 prong screwback claw setting , btw.

Also to note, we are overseas, so the company would have to be able to ship overseas. I read GOG's shipping details, they don't ship outside US. Whiteflash that seems to get all the good reviews does send overseas, as do US Certed (???). I've checked with customs, and is aware of the cost (sets us back around 200 dollars). Where should I look ? Can you please help me ?

Thanks.

Whiteflash sells loose stones, and you would be well taken care of. There are other PS recommended vendors here in the Resources Centre as well.

I like the WF website for searches: gives you lots of options. And, they ship overseas on a regular basis. I had my ring made by them and then shipped to Canada: easy as pie!

Or, you could just call them, tell them what you're looking for and see what they come up with as a recommendation.

Good luck and have fun with your project!

I'd call Whiteflash and Winfield's Jewelers. Both will ship overseas and can help you get the most of your budget. It will be cutting it close to get what you want for your price (if you need stones that are 5.3mm). It can be done, but some help to get you there would be nice to make sure you are getting good quality stones.

Hi, thanks for responding.

I went and contact Whiteflash and they recommended some stones. We haven't agreed on the stones, though...

I think the most critical issue (considering that she really wants to use the old setting) is the diameter of the stone (well.. aside from the C's), right ? I mean.... how far down can a claw setting go ? If the original stone was a 5.3-ish, will a 5mm stone be too small for the setting ?

Also, I would like some advice on the differences of A cut Above diamonds, expert selection and this other diamonds that they have. How would price vs 4C compares between those three types ? And with the risk of sounding stupid, how different would a 3 stones of each type with the same 4C's look ?
