I'm starting to look now with not a lot of time and need to keep the cost of my outfit to something reasonable.. I don't know quite what the weather is like in Columbia, South Carolina in mid November.. so.. thought I'd throw a couple outfits out and see what you thought...

I would go with the colorful second dress or the simple black one from Macys!  The black one is probably more appropriate for the season though

I really like the second floral dress too, plus having seen your figure/coloring before I think it'll look fab on you! If the event was in NYC, the black one is fab. But black in South Carolina just seems so depressing for some reason, lol. The floral one looks more appropriate for a happy event IMO.

SDL, I liked a lot of the ones from barrieplace, especially the green and yellow ones. Simple and elegant. I love the floral dress, I think it would look so cheerful. But it is going to be wintertime and the dress looks so summery. Not sure if people will be dressed in more muted tones, and then you'll feel like you stand out too much? I agree though that black is not the way to go: COP OUT!!

Here are some that I liked, I hope they are fitting to your tastes:

I thought this was simple and elegant, and not a color than anyone could feel self-conscious in link. You would need to accessorize it a bit, maybe boots if it was cold outside? A kicken handbag would look good too. This one's by the same designer and is a similar color too, link.

I tried this dress on in the store link and I loved the color and material.

Ooh, I like this one too link As a matter of fact www.chadwicks.com has a lot of bargain options.

I think this one's pretty and form flattering, black and white is a little dull, but the design is festive link Another fun black and white option
link

This one's named after me!link

Ooh, a bolero, this one is a wildcard! link link

Is this too formal? It might be.. link

The color on this one just pops out of the page. I think it would suit almost any complexion. Great material too, I think they make it in an eggplant as well link

I am a sucker for a dress with pockets. They are like a security blanket for me! link The color is nice too!

Here's a floral with fall foliage, I actually think its very pretty! link

Is this too hotmama? Cause I likey link Love the colors on this one from the same site link

I hope you liked some of those! If you didn't that's okay too, I actually needed to go find a dress for myself for an event that is coming up. Look what I just ordered link

What are the actual events you will be attending? Is there a dinner? Is it daytime?

What are the actual events you will be attending? Is there a dinner? Is it daytime?

Schedule of Events (from the site)

The day before graduation the Battalion Commander meets with family members to discuss your soldier’s recent experiences and answer your questions.

That evening, you can join your soldier for a buffet dinner.   Dinner tickets cost $7.00 per adult (to include your Soldier), $3.75 for children   5 -12 years, and children under 5 are free.  Specific information on dinner will be available upon arrival. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Solomon Center on Family Day.  Tickets can also be purchased at the location of your Soldier's Dinner (NCO or Officer Club). This information will be provided to you on the Family Day/Graduation Flyer, once you arrive at Fort Jackson.

Graduation is at Hilton Field (weather permitting), and begins promptly at 10 a.m.   Weather can vary, so remember to dress appropriately. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will move to indoors to the Solomon Center (times will be on your schedule of events). Tune to Fort Jackson Radio on AM-1650 for up-to-date announcements and driving directions for Family Day and Graduation.

Spending Time With Your Soldier

On  the day before Graduation, the Soldiers are released to their family members for an "on-post" pass following the Bn Commander's brief. Soldiers will be released from the Community Activity Center immediately following the Battalion Commander's Family Brief. While on "Pass", the Soldier is to destinations on post (Ft. Jackson).

While on pass, Soldiers must remain in uniform and are not allowed to drive vehicles, drink any form of alcohol or use any tobacco products.

Scheduled Family Day activities include:

10:00 AM - Family/Spouse Briefing is conducted by Army Community Services (ACS) in the Solomon Center. This briefing is designed to provide the spouses of new Soldiers with information about some of the key services provided at installations around the world. (ACS, Family Life Chaplain and the Red Cross).

11:00 AM - Family Briefing conducted by the Battalion Commander in the Solomon Center. During this time families will receive an introduction to Combat Training and be provided with details about graduation events.

SDL,

I live 45 minutes from Ft Jackson and you have about an 80% chance of warm ( high 70's ) and sunny at that time of year. If a cold front has just rolled through it could be cool and breezy, but would still be in the 60's after lunch. The timing is a bit of a shame- had it been just a little earlier you could have joined the Charlotte GTG ! I hope you get a chance to look around a bit- this is an awful pretty part of the world! Are you flying in to CLT or Columbia ? Let me know and I will try to give you some insider travel and traffic info. I drove past Ft Jax earlier this week, and in fact did a little time there back in my active duty days.

ETA : The Carolinas are modern enough that we wear black for occasions other than funerals! lol

Well, since graduation is at 0900 and our family day begins at 1000, I'll be sure to bring a wrap, regardless. I'm watching the weather website to see what we may encounter. We're flying into Columbia and staying 5miles from the entrance to the base. Zac can't leave the base the first day, but will be able to after graduation Friday (like you didn't know? lol). We're hoping to see a bit of the historic district, from what I can gather, there are several points of interest for us history freaks. We leave on Saturday, so it will be a quick visit. I wish that we could have spend more time there, I'd have loved to have met everyone from the area. At some point in the next couple (hopefully) of years, we hope to be able to travel back East again to do a little hopping down the coast.

I'm thinking that a light sweater and slacks might be more appropriate... and comfortable given the time frame I'll be in them.

i'm betting you've got some things in your closet that will work.   and i'm betting your son doesn't care if you have a new outfit...he'll  just be pleased you're there.  personally, i'd save the $, put something together from the closet and maybe add a new accessory [scarf or such], perhaps something he has seen me in and liked or his favorite color.  then i'd take that cash and i'd give it to him to have as a safety net should the need arise.  but thats me.....there are those that think i'm too practical.

otherwise, i vote for the Alfani Sheath Dress as it is practical, you'll wear it again, you can dress it up or down, can put a jacket or sweater or both with it, wear heals, possibly boots, etc.  very flexible, very elegant and for a great price.

I love the first one.  I think you would look spectacular in that highwaisted checked black and checkered dress with the belt.  It just sings SDL to me.  I like the gold shirt and skirt number too, but I still am drawn to the first dress..

I love the new picture in your avatar.  That color of blue looks awesome on you.

Unfortunately, I am still in between sizes in my closet. The 14's are hanging on me now and I am still losing weight. So the need for new clothes are becoming more apparent. ;) (yay)

As far as safety net, he's got a huge one compared to ours with the sign on he received... but its a postive thought :)

Still deciding but thank you for you input!!!! I agree the Alfani is elegant. :)

So I went to Nordy's today... I bought these slacks.. they're more chocolate and they have a tweed-ish look to them with splashes of burnt orange and ivory.. I also bought an ivory big collar turtleneck sweater by Caslon. Tomorrow I stop by DSW on my way to having my hair done and then on to work ... :)
