I just received my ring from Whiteflash and it looks great. It came with an appraisal which is done by an outside company, but I'm wondering how independent that appraisal is since Whiteflash paid for it. Can anyone give me some guidance here on if I need a separate appraisal that will cost another $150?

The White Flash appraisal will work well for insurance purposes. The appraiser White Flash uses is a reputable 3rd party. But, jewelry values vary from area to area. The cost of replacement might be higher where you live than the appraisal you received from White Flash.

Appraisals are used for insurance purposes and are all subjective so don;t put too much creedence on it. Having said that, the appraisal from WhiteFlash will do just fine for appraised value when you have in insured unless it has been appraise well over the price that you had paid. Why? Well, insurance cost will be predicated on the replacement value of the diamond as indicated on the appraisal. Meaning the hight the value the greater the cost to insure.

I recently purchased a Whiteflash diamond, and I had it appraised prior to purchase by Dave Atlas' firm Accredited Gem Appraisers. The replacement value specified on the appraisal from AGA was just a tiny bit less than the appraisal value given to me on the Whiteflash letter of verification. The difference was negligable, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Personally, I'm still happy I had the stone sent to a 3rd party just for my own peace of mind...but if I were going to buy a second diamond from Whiteflash I may not get that 2nd opinion.

I agree with what magna2 had to say. I'm sure that you received a reliable appraisal from WF. So I wouldn't worry about that too much. However, if you are concerned and want peace of mind than just have a third party evaluate the diamond. I to would recommend Dave Atlas. He is very reliable.

Just to ease your mind a little more - I also recently purchased a diamond from Whiteflash and had it appraised by a third party here in Canada (EGL). The result of the appraisal was the exact same as that from Whiteflash and their 3rd party. I did it for piece of mind because I was paranoid (so paranoid that I considered getting another appraisal to make sure that the 3rd party gave me back my original stone ... but this could go on forever!!). Lucky for me EGL offered to do a 'pregrading' report (I think that's what it was called) that basically verified the stone was what Whiteflash said it was and gave me the replacement value as well. Cost was only $25 CDN.

I also purchased my diamond from White Flash. I added my new jewelry piece to an existing Home Owner's policy and my insurance company required a "local" appraisal. The local appraisal was $800 more for the diamond due to replacement costs quoted by local diamond brokers for a similar H&A diamond.

If you're comfortable with the purchase and don't feel a need to have it "double checked", then the appraisal from Whiteflash should work fine. Rich, Independent GG Appraiser |

I don't think you'll need another appraisal
The facts seem clear to me
