Hi,

We have Chubb and it's costing us way too much to keep up. Right now we're paying $700 a year for a $20,000 policy. Does anyone know of a similar type policy (where you have a say in the replacement ring) that they can recommend?

(BTW - we do not own a home, we rent...)

Thank you for any feedback.

CC

I think you can have a say with Jeweler's Mutual, which gets a lot of press here.

Also...do check out State Farm for their valuable articles policy.  When shopping in years past, I found them inexpensive, and they come with an agent to help you.

Jeweler's Mutual is great. They allow you to work with the jeweler of your choosing, so really it isn't too different from a replacement policy assuming that you actually want to replace the ring. Their claims process is VERY easy, I went through it in January. We just picked our jeweler and they took care of everything.

We added mine to our renters insurance. It increased our renters coverage from the (Ohio) standard $20,000 to $28,000. And, we only had to pay about $50 more a year more. They just had to write an addendum and see the appraisal. Under our previous policy, only $1000 in jewelry was covered, but now it is closer to $9000 (which more than covers my ring). It covers theft, stone loss, and any damage to the stone or the setting.

Oh, and our rental policy is through Nationwide.

ETA: I have total selection in instance of replacement, but I do have to pay and then be reimbursed. Not sure what Chubb's policy is like here.

adding it to a homeowners or renters policy is the cheapest way to go.

Whether you decide to go with a stand alone policy or add it to your homeowners make sure it's on an agreed value not replacement cost. On agreed value you will get what you insure it fot. Replacement cost will get you a ring of "like quality". This is especially important if it's a designer ring like from Tiffany or Cartier where you are also paying for the brand.

I am with Jewelers mutual.  Previously I had my ring insured with my homeowners policy.  The reason I switched was if I filed a claim my homeowners insurance would increase.  They were the exact same price, $10 per $1000 coverage per year.  It was also extremely easy to apply online for the policy.

Bump.

Thanks for the information. We will definitely look into these options. I was wondering if any else had additional suggestions.

Thanks again!

I added the wife's ring (~20k) to the homeowner's policy with Allstate. It raised our premium about 300 bucks a year, and there is a specific endorsement on the policy for jewelry. The endorsement covers all the regular stuff, theft, loss of the jewel in the setting, etc.. We're in the midwest, US..
