Are all dresses heavy or is it just me? I tried on dresses for the first time today and I discovered that I like taffeta purely for the reason that it is not so heavy lol. I was not crazy about the skirty thing underneath either but on the other side....I like puffy skirts haha.

Anyways...do you guys know of any other fabric that is not heavy or that you have had good experience with?

YES! My dress is silk shantung (it's VERY CLOSE to taffeta) and I literally feel like I can float in it, it is SO LIGHT AND AIRY! my dress doesn't have a big princess skirt either so I don't need the big slip which adds LOTS of weight too

I purchased my gown in natural silk and it is not super heavy at all. It is substantial and a little heavier than taffeta but not too heavy. I am getting married in march, so the weather can go either way. I considered ordering the gown in satin instead, but it was much heavier and seemed too "fabric-y."

My dress was SO hot! I could literally feel the sweat dripping down my legs at the reception (sorry for the gory details)....it was SO hot and I never even considered it while shopping for dresses!

I LOVED my dress and would wear it all over again - but MAN - was it HOT!

I changed into my post-reception dress with 45 minutes left of the reception - it was SUCH a relief!

But to be honest, I had one of those things underneath the dress - a slip - and it had tulle too - I can't think of what they are called....when I took that slip off, relief hit like a wave - i think it was the slip that was baking my poor legs and not my dress....

If you were trying on dresses with slips, try without one - and see how it feels - most dresses have enough built in to "sustain" the "poof"

I strongly 2nd Blair's suggestion of silk. I just got married on 9/13 - it was warm out, absolutely pouring (read: humid), but I was surprisingly comfortable in my silk dress even with my steel boned satin corset under it. I found that satin/synthetic fabric was MUCH hotter while trying on dresses. Definitely make a point to note your comfort while you're trying different dresses on. If you're sweating and sticky just 5 minutes after putting on a dress, how are you going to feel 3 hours into your reception (possibly w/ alcohol and dancing involved)?

A big dress in the summer is going to be a sauna regardless of the fabric. All those petticoats you have to wear trap heat like it's their job! Think about how much fabric that is. I ended up choosing a silk charmeuse gown that won't require a petticoat and won't make me hot so I won't be totally uncomfortable if it's really warm out.

if there was a dress i absolutely loved is there a way just to order it made in a different fabric or do you have to just pick a different dress? it was crazy busy at the store today so i had a hard time thinking of everything i wanted to ask

It depends a lot on the designer. Some designers automatically offer fabric options - I think Maggie Sottero does that a lot. A synthetic option and a more expensive silk option, for example. Or satin vs taffeta.

if your heart is set on a satin gown, buy a hoop skirt to wear under it instead of a tulle-filled petticoat thing. that way you have a lot of ventilation and nothing is sticking to your legs!

i think robbie wore one under her dress and she liked it...

My original thought was to find something chiffony and floaty.  I loathe the heavy satin dresses.  On me.  And they were really hot, too.

I wound up with a lighter weight silk-satin with a net overlay.  Even it would have been a bit warm on a summer day; it was moisture inducing even in the fall!

I don't think it's a big deal to go alone! I went alone to several stores, and although the changing was a little awkward with the salesladies, it really wasn't bad. I brought friends back to stores where I had dresses I really liked.

If you don't go anywhere else, you and your sister must go to Anna Be. It is the cutest little boutique, and they serve you free champagne! Although they have some couture gowns that are very expensive, they also have a couple racks of beautiful $500-1500 dresses.

Another shop that has a ton of samples is D'Anelli Bridal in Lakewood. They have an excellent reputation, and their service and selection are both very nice.

I went by myself to several bridal stores, when my best friend couldn't make it. It was no problem whatsoever.

I had the tailor cut an underneath layer out of my dress to make it lighter and cooler. I'm not sure if that's possible with all dresses (probably not), but it didn't really change the look of the dress except make it very slightly less puffy and have a little more movement.  It really did help.

Some of the wedding gowns are really heavy and hot. I got married when it was hot so I made sure to find a silk dress so it would breath easier. I'm glad I did since I was more comfortable in my silk gown than my bm's were in their polyester dresses.
