Golly, I've been looking around for an unheated sapphire and the prices are totally crazy , like $1,000 or much more for a 1 to 1.5 carat stone. Is that average? Aren't there any bargains out there?

What you are finding is standard for unheated/untreated stones - you now have to beware of diffusion treated (http://www.professionaljeweler.com/archives/news/2003/101003story.html) blue stones - remembering that almost all sapphires are at least heat treated. To be safe, demand an AGL or AGTA cert that states no evidence of treatment. I'm afraid you will have to be very lucky to avoid paying less than $800-1000 and on up per ct. for a well cut medium-dark blue stone with no color zoning. |

Gary is correct. Certified unheated sapphires of decent color are very, very hot right now, largely because of various controversies over treatment and treatment disclosure.

Hmm so if I did get a stone and they claimed it was untreated should it come with a certificate? Also I guess I would have to get it looked at as well right. How do I find out who to have it looked at by?

I just read that article, there seems to be a lot of sleaziness in the gem trade. -Kitten
