I saw that sizes 4 and smaller and larger-than-average sizes cost extra for the vatche settings. i can understand why larger ones would cost more, because they require more metal. why do the smaller ones cost more? does the crown (?top of the ring setting?) become smaller as the ring size goes down? I'd hope that the top of a size 4 would be proportionately smaller than the top of a 6 or larger. Can anyone explain?

just curious

Not a vendor here, but this one I know from experience (3.5 size finger). The small settings sometimes cost more because the shop has to size them prior to shippment. Few companies would actually customize all the elements of the setting according to ring zise. Mass producers (such as Vatche) do not. The 'head' of your size 4 ring will be as big as for a size 10. However, this should not be a problem since those settings are not huge (unless you model is really bulky, but with the range of puducts I know, no worries). The head of some rings does come in different sizes for different sizes of the stone. So, if you have small fingers and want a small ring, the size of the stone is key. Well, unless you have some pave in mind, or another model with signifficant band width: as I said, those are not custom-made following sizes.... Another concern would be sizing down 3-stone settings. If the sizing is radical (above 2 sizes, I guess) the 3 stones tend to acquire gaps between them as the curvature of the band increases.

Thanks so much for your reply! You have an X-prong? May I ask what size your stone is? Do you have any pictures?? I'm trying to figure out what size stone goes well with such a small ring. Any help/advice/pictures you could give would be awesome!

Smaller ring sizes often require custom wax work. The top of the ring is based on the size of the center stone, not the ring size.

I wear my ring in all harsh environments (rock climbing or... washing those dishes). To be able to do this I got a bezel. The only constraint on ring-size (well, not fashion rings, those can be as big as you may want them!) I insist on is that the diameter of the ring head does not go beyond 90% of the width of my finger. Same for a prong-set (sorry, never got one) for at most a 6mm height. This is all. Some of my occasional rings are funny huge, so I know that a rather shallow mounting with a stone way bigger than my finger feels 'barely there'. Bottom line: I think that high mountings are quite unconfortable despite small size, and low-set ones are very user-friendly, despite large size. Prong settings can be either low or hight-set... So as long as they feel confortable, no other size rules apply for my rings! That dayly-worn ring I mentioned has a 12X8 mm, thin bezel (stone is about 1mm smaller in either dimention). The largest ring I have has 80 carat faceted beryl, and it still wears well! No way to get pictures here...
