Hi,

I am having a custom platinum engagement ring made and would like to know if we are getting fair price quotes.  The shank of the ring will be 2.5mm wide, it will have one round center stone (1.5 ct) and princess-cut channel stones (approx. 5 on each side for a combined weight of 1ct).  We already own the 1.5ct center stone.

Jeweler A quoted me $3900 which includes everything (design, labor, platinum, and side stones) with the exception of the center stone.

Jeweler B quoted me $1200 for just the "design" work, and roughly estimated that the platinum and side stones would add on another $1800.  The price would go up and down depending on the platinum spot price and the size/weight of side stones.

Are their prices reasonable or should I continue shopping around for a jeweler?

Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide.

I'd like to know what about this ring is unique that you would require a custom job?

That sounds super pricey!  I'm with JulieN, have you not found anything you like that doesn't have to be custom made?  Give the folks at Whiteflash a call.

My Fi had my ring custom made with patinum and 1 point pave on the shank and midway around the ring (about .4 tcw D-F, VS1 or higher quality diamonds).  I believe the cost was 3k before tax...so considering that you have more diamonds on yours, i would consider this within range...if you want custom work you have to pay for the custom job. =)

Ditto JulieN's question. From my experience with ring shopping your design description seems fairly common. Most nicer jewelry stores we visited already had various princess channel settings.

Hi,

Thank you for your comments and advice.

What is unique about the design is the shank shape. I have attached a sketch of the shape -- it is kind of squarish. It is a European design. I was in London and saw these rings at a high-end jeweler years ago. I tried them on and fell in love with them. Some argue that it does not look any different than a circular shape when you put it on your finger, however, I noticed the subtle difference. Also, the shape prevents the ring from twisting around your finger. Unfortunately, I can't remember the designer so I'm just trying to replicate it here in California.

Thanks!

Hi twinkiestar - there are a number of brands that do euro-shank - A Jaffe is one.
Also, as your design sounds not too "out there", what about finding a ring you like at say WF and asking them to customise the shank? Then you won't have to pay for CADS, design fees etc. Just a thought!
