mrmessy Rough Rock Total Posts: 25 Last Post: 3/25/2009 Member Since: 9/18/2008	hi, i'm looking for a ring like this one: http://www.jbstar.com/products.php?category=9&page=&product=2407 the local BBB has this for $27k but it's a 1.2ct center. it seems a bit high for this ring. anyone know of where i can get a better price or if there is a similar ring that i can get for a good price? it woudl seem to me that the setting shoudl be around ~$7-8k and the stone for ~$10k from what i've seen on these boards. am I way off here? help me out please. trying to find the perfect ring for my future (hopefully) wife. Thanks

Honestly, I'd consider going custom with Leon Mege or Maytal Hannah if you want a pave setting. What shape center stone do you want? mrmessy Rough Rock Total Posts: 25 Last Post: 3/25/2009 Member Since: 9/18/2008	I liked the oval mainly because the round and square cuts (emerald, cushion, princess, etc) seemed to make the ring look way too big. the oval seemed just the right size for this double halo, pave, ring. her fingers are somewhat long and slender. i know this is of some debate, but it seems that custom rings are more expensive, but more importantly, there doesn't seem to be a good custom designer locally. i would really rather be able to see the rings in person, but maybe i'm being overly cautious.

Leon makes rings for top jewelers in NYC. And Maytal has worked for both Beaudry and Tiffany. But if you want to buy a diamond and order a JB Star setting, you certainly can. That is a very ornate ring for everyday. Does she dress up for work? ~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~

There will be a considerable gap if she does wear one. Just thought you might want to consider that. My ring diamond came from Good Old Gold in NY. They handpick really excellent stones and can show them to you in a video if you wish. They have one oval that is a bit above your $10,000 target, but you can get an idea. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/2053/ You need to pick the stone first and then have the setting made. Be 100% sure you know her ring size. (And I am assuming you know she wants a ring of this style, right?) ~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~

mrmessy Rough Rock Total Posts: 25 Last Post: 3/25/2009 Member Since: 9/18/2008	good points. she hasn't really dropped any hints on rings that she wants in particular, but she has stated a little of what she likes and doesn't like. she pointed her friends ring and how she liked the diamonds on the band, she also pointed out once how she didn't like another friend's ring because it looked too...old? to tell you the truth, i've just started looking really and I used to think that the solitaire with a pave setting would be nice, but now it seems to common. i do want it to be somewhat special and not something that everyone would have. i was thinking that if you had the wedding band, then you could swap it out for this ering when it was a more special occasion. i just can't see wearing the ering after the marriage that often. mainly because it costs so much. am i sounding too much like a newbie? it can be all so...much.

Most guys who come on here are newbies, so don't feel badly about that! That is why we are here to help you! Most women want to wear their engagement ring with their wedding band all the time. If you look in my avatar, I wear a fairly simple e-ring with a diamond wedding band. This allows me to wear it all the time because it is not so extremely fancy. I'd really say the opposite of what you said...why spend all that money and have a ring that you didn't wear all the time?! You just get insurance and enjoy the ring! The best advice I can offer you is that I believe it is best to choose an outstanding quality diamond and set it in a simple solitaire setting for the proposal. Then allow her to choose another set or just a diamond wedding band to go with it afterwards. I really would not go with an ornate setting unless that was what she specifically picked out. They are not that practical for daily wear and it can be a pain to lose the little diamonds. We have bought a ring and earring diamonds from Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash and cannot recommend them highly enough. We came close to making a big mistake buying a poorer quality stone locally but thankfully found PS before buying. Get the best stone you can now and you won't regret that. Settings can always be changed as tastes change in the future. ~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~

mrmessy Rough Rock Total Posts: 25 Last Post: 3/25/2009 Member Since: 9/18/2008	i had some close guests in town this weekend, and pretty much confirmed everything you said was right and I was wrong...seems a trend that i've run into a little too often. so, maybe the jbstar is a little too ornate. but i do know future wifey wants pave and i prefer something different than the usual pave settings. and yes, i will get a good diamond first. i do prefer more the round or oval diamond. but what setting... more research to do. will it never end?!
