---------------- Wow! So the question is...what's the HCA score of the Hope Diamond?!?! Somebody request a Sarin report.

The Hope is a modified round, not a round brilliant, so it wouldn't work in the HCA.
![]() Incidentally, that article is a bit off. It's phosphorescence that's being displayed, not fluorescence. The latter is the immediate reaction to UV light, the former is light emitted after the UV lamp is turned off. In fact, phosphorescence is not unusual in blue diamonds, though the Hope's is among the strongest ever recorded.
I'm also a little intrigued by the statement that the cause is a mystery. I suppose the precise cause is undetermined, but phosphorescence is well-understood. It's just the result of the atoms in the diamonds absorbing light at one wavelength (ultraviolet), then releasing it at a lower wavelength (red-visible) after the electrons drop back to their original energy level. I think what Jeff Post means is that we don't know exactly which elements are absorbing and emitting the light.

LG..I thought the article seemed a little too 'mysterious' for it to be correct...figured you'd oust the incorrect information and impart your delicious knowledge.
