Wow! So the question is...what's the HCA score of the Hope Diamond?!?!
Somebody request a Sarin report.

The Hope is a modified round, not a round brilliant, so it wouldn't work in the HCA.

Incidentally, that article is a bit off. It's phosphorescence that's being displayed, not fluorescence. The latter is the immediate reaction to UV light, the former is light emitted after the UV lamp is turned off. In fact, phosphorescence is not unusual in blue diamonds, though the Hope's is among the strongest ever recorded.

I'm also a little intrigued by the statement that the cause is a mystery. I suppose the precise cause is undetermined, but phosphorescence is well-understood. It's just the result of the atoms in the diamonds absorbing light at one wavelength (ultraviolet), then releasing it at a lower wavelength (red-visible) after the electrons drop back to their original energy level. I think what Jeff Post means is that we don't know exactly which elements are absorbing and emitting the light.

LG..I thought the article seemed a little too 'mysterious' for it to be correct...figured you'd oust the incorrect information and impart your delicious knowledge.

Yes, it's amazing the information you pick up dating women with big bootys.

Well, even the guys at CNN are journalists and, according to the article itself, the writer intended to preserve the 'mistery' as oposed to 'sheer science'. This, while he still can do so before man-made blue diamonds are released to shops by the end of this year... Right infront of me on the desk is a Fluorite cube which delivers the same effect (plus color change and fluorescence) for almost a minute! Quite nice distraction for a home-office... I can't wait to try the trick on the first batch of artificial blue diamonds (same boron lattice infiltration involved there) to arrive here in Berlin in November!
